Default hotplate

in my area the only hotplates we have are gas. Instead of buying a stand alone hotplate in order to cook/boil/heat solvents i was thinking of making a makeshift one .. from an electric kettle element.

i know naked flames are a HUGE no no. But with this idea i believe i could make a hotplate.

what are your thoughts?

ofcourse a dimmer switch would be implemented to control the amount of electricity going to the element.

It was bit of a flashbang idea. Our kettle just broke and i was thinking kettles.

good stuff

comments appreciated ..

i am unsure hot hot they get .. its hot enough to boil water .. but thats with the element in direct contact with the liquid

im unsure if it could heat a pot

hmm

well i could test and see

it should do (maybe an elenmeyer flask would conduct the heat more efficiently).

those elements are not designed to be used without first being immersed--so dont do it---go down to your local retravision and buy a little hotplate(the smaller the heating plate the better)
