my phosphuric acid wont react although it`s 75% something blocking reaction.any ideas on how to purify or dissassociate?heating wont work tried that.iodine goes up in purple smoke at 200 degrees.

A post by Jamiraquia says that phosphoric should work, although by its molecular structure it is not able to react properly with iodine alone to create HI, potassium iodide will though. Phosphoric acid

if I am correct is composed of a phosphorous molecule surrounded by 4 hydrogen molecules but the hydrogen molecules are also bonded

with 4 oxygen molecules leaving no free

hydrogen molecules to react with pure iodine to create HI. Try phosphorous acid or Hypophosphorous acid, these two acids both have free hydrogen molecules.

sawdust. Did you add any water even a couple drops to your iodine/phoszpheric acid while heating? I undurstand the question about dissociating. I'm thinking that

boiling your phosphoric acid with like 3 drops of hydrogen peroxide or water for 5 minutes or longer may result in a formula of phosphatic acid that will react with crystalline iodine. I know there is a way to use simple phosphoric acid to react with iodine, I do know this, that potassium and sodium iodide react with phosphoric to create HI. maybe by adding your iodine to the phosphoric acid and a drop or two

of actual tincture (that contains NaI or KI)

will begin a chain reaction of phosphoric acid to HI by means of iodide and also continuing to react with the pure I2.

H3PO4 + H2O « H3O+* + H2PO4-

An acid such as Nitric Acid (HNO3) or phosphoric acid is a substance which, when added to water, breaks apart or "ionizes" to provide hydrogen (H+) ions.

bubbling hcl acid through a slurry of phosphoric acid/iodine and water or

adding some hydrochloric acid dropwise to

an amoount of phosphoric acid and heating to

just under 200 degrees 180F, then adding I2

and watching to see if the iodine starts to break apart and be absorbed by the water turning it reddish brown or yellow.

There most certainly is a way to react phosphoric acid and iodine to get HI acid

without using Ki or NaI.

I tried adding ten drops of HCL to 85% phosphoric acid and heating to 180F. I then added iodine crystals and the crystals did not react in any way. I tried adding some hot dh2o to this mixture and still received no reaction. Has anyone been able to create HI from phosphoric acid with Iodine crystals through any means? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
