Any suggestions first?
SWIKB friend is going to try his first procedure tomorrow. His idea is mostly based on info found thru various web sources. Here is his plan. Already have the 3 main parts ready. Using a regular flask (no type of filtration or side tubulation flask could be located yet) Plan is to use E=3g, I=4g,RP=3g and DH20=4ml. Top of flask fitted with heat proof type baloon. Slowly heated to 90C over 3 hours and maintaining 90C for 33 additional hours. I2 will be divided in 3. 1.3g going in at begining, 1.3 after 12 hours and 1.3 after 24 hours. This is a first for him so he isnt expecting a big yield (especially with the generic type flask) but just wants to come up with a decent product just to get the feel for things before moving on to bigger and better. Thanks.

Re: Any suggestions first?
RP/I is not my forte, but its good to see you experimenting and learning before you tackle serious amounts--no matter what synth you use and what method you follow--ive found that we all change little bits to suit our location and ingredient availability--follow exactly what they say till you see and learn for yourself--your on the right path--stick to it, but never forget to be willing to listen and learn from your own experiences as well as the advice of those more knowledgeable--good luck--do it in a safe place--have your wet blanket ready--and have a set plan to do the bolter if she gets out of control

sounds all good to me. i might cut the DH2O back to 3 ml but in such a long reflux it should be ok. your yield should be around 1.5 gram. the rxn is fairly simple work. its the post rxn workup where the ball is usually dropped and product is lost and/or fucked up. good luck in your adventure.

Good job soldier! Also, you must NOT be at all sloppy in the rest of the procedure. i worry for you, youll probably screw up somewhere. You must know HOW it all works not only the directions. I really hope it works well for you. *thumbs up*

Re: Any suggestions first?
also are you planning on hooking your balloon directly on to your flask? its better to obtain a stopper with a hole in it for your flask a #6 for a 250 ml (which is the size you are using for this amount i assume) a #7 for a 500 ml and a #9 or #9.5 for a 1000 ml. then take a 18 to 24 inch piece of clear tubing one end hooked to glass nipple that is thru the hole in the stopper, usually i blow my nipples myself from raw glass tubing. (damn that sounded wierd lol) then connect your balloon to the other end of your tubing. while the cook is happning the tubing is kept vertical. reason for this is sometimes the ballon will suck itself back into the flask and adhere itself perfectly to the inner flask wall. quite a mess to work with actually when this happens lol make sure there are no leaks in your setup. hopefully by this time sunday you will be bugeyed and speaking tweekanese. again, good luck

Re: Any suggestions first?
Yeah definately thank for everyones help. I also beleive he is going to be putting the baloon directly onto the flask and then ducktaped around it. Not to sure tho as he has gone to good ol Wal Mart to try to find a better hot plate than the one he has so not able to ask right now. And yes I know most people on here say SWIM or SWIM's friend or whatever but in this case it really is SWIKB's friend not SWIKB himself. Friend has no internet access.

I like to see reference to the meth gods. Very few people remember them in the end. Im feeling very emotional right now.

Re: Any suggestions first?
I just reread your post. when i said add all the ephedrine at once I thought you wrote "E" rather than I. But i would also add all the iodine at once.

Re: Any suggestions first?
For your first try, add all the iodine at the first. Swigotta stills adds everything at once. Lets see, what was not said?
You would benefit greatly from the balloon being away, at least a little, from the flask.
With a hot plate, be sure to use a sand (wet) or oil bath to eliminate hot spots.
Make sure you swirl the flask at least every couple of hours. More often sure won't hurt.
If after 36 hours you can put your nose to the opening of the flask and smell an acrid, burning, acid smell, cook it a few hours more. Its not critical to get "the smell" cause too much iodine will prevent it until after its diluted.
Oh yeah, don't add too much water. 1ml. per g. of E is plenty.
If you have practiced your A/B skills with pfed, you'll probably get at least half what you put in.
And the meth gods...you must titrate your first batch, don't gas. Shake the sep. funnel exactly 180 seconds during which time you sing and dance in honor of their gifts.
Really!!

Re: Any suggestions first?
Hahaha. Im hope so. We'd both be happy with any type of yield and exstatic for a 50% yield the 1st go around. I know thats not much for you experienced people but hey you gotta start somewhere. Anyway the oil bath you speak of. I remember reading a post on it but cant seem to find it now. You just want to put some oil onto the hot plate correct? If so Im guessing just vegetable oil or am I incorrect? Also will I need to add a little more oil every few hours or so or will that first amount be good enough to hold for 36 (possibly more) hours? Thanks again.

Re: Any suggestions first?
Oh yeah and another quick question just out of curiosity (sp?). He already made the I2 crystals from the normal HCL, H202, blah blah blah method. I was just reading on totse this following method. I dont see how this could work and just curious if it actually does?....
Iodine crystals are a particularly interesting substance. Iodine is a chemical that is almost required for a good contact explosive. Because it is so easy to find a recipe that includes Iodine crystals, I will not clutter up this file with them.
To create Iodine crystals, you will need the following:
Tincture of Iodine (or Iodine Tincture) --> Any amount
Candle, bunson burner, blowtorch or other flame. GRILL WILL NOT WORK!
Ice (regular, NOT dry...)
An all-metal lid (like to a jar) (2)
Grill (relatively clean, with no charcoal)
Tongs
Gloves
1) Put the bunson burner in the grill and light it. Then place the grill part of the grill in its normal position.
2) Pour some of the iodine into the first lid and place it on the grill above the flame. THE FLAME SHOULD NOT TOUCH THE LID, but should come within one half to one full inch!!
3) Put the ice in the other lid and hold it above the lid with the soon to be boiling iodine. This should be done with the tongs while wearing the gloves!!!!
4) The alcohol should burn off and the iodine should re-cool on the bottom of the lid with the ice in it. Use a jar, Dixie cup, shotgun cartrige, facial orafice, whatever, to collect the crystals from the bottom of the lid. These are the almost 100% pure iodine crystals. Very effective.
NOTE: Iodine (tincture of) should be bought in smaller quanities, as this is all that is availible from drug/grocery stores. It is used to cover up open wounds to expedite the healing process.

Re: Any suggestions first?
peanut oil has the highest boiling point--and is easily available at any supermarket---and as long as you keep 6mm to 8mm on the bottom of the pan itl be fine--just keep a visual reference on it and replace as neccesary

Re: Any suggestions first?
I forgot. That is the worst example of resublimation of iodine I have ever seen. Save the barbeque for steak and ribs and search the hive for geezmeisters resublimed iodine method. Now that you can trust.
OK, I don't think I can remember everything, so I guess I'll take the time to go and look at the posts as I go.
Now, the meth gods are not true gods and should never be mistaken for the one God. They are, however, the true spirits of the reaction. Your desire to perform each task accurately and skillfully pleases them and earns you their favor. Cutting corners and rushing things brings the opposite.
Why so much yah yah about the meth gods? Swigotta laughed and made fun of the meth gods when he was first told of their power. He suffered low yields and so so quality (at the time it was considered so so, now .......its too embarrassing even for me to talk about it).
One day he took them seriously and danced and sang during the 180. He did not stop when his wife came busting in inquiring about dinner. He continued on until the very last second and showed no embarrassment when he was done. His wife laughed her ass off.
The quality was exceptional. The yield was a milestone.
That night, Swigotta's wife accidentally took too big a hit and threw up in front of several friends...........it was corn and red koolaid. She was quite embarrassed.
Swigotta has danced that same dance each and every time since. He's fuckin' wierd about it. He varies the words to ward off complacency (it would be sacrilegious of me to repeat any of them here) while keeping them up to date on current events. (if they really listen, Video Editor is getting some serious smurf every day for the rest of his life)
As for me, I gogo with the flow. If he wants to dance around like a drunk commanche for 3 minutes, so be it. If he wants me to participate.............uh, my job is pretty much over. Technically, he doesn't need me anymore...........I sure hope some of them are goddesses cause I don't wanna suck nuthin'.
Ya know what I mean?
WT......Holy shit. What is this bullshit?! Is gotta losing his mind, or what?
Be careful! It's all true!
OK, here's what I'm thinkin':
If you must use a hotplate, realize that the cheaper they are, the cheaper the thermostat (rheostat) is that controls them. Even the $12. 20 amp rheostats at the hardware store will do a better job. If one of you are mechanically inclined, pop out the little bullshit dial that goes from 1-10 and hook the wiring up to a heavy duty ceiling fan controller (less than optimal, but lightyears ahead of the dinky little pot you have to start with. Also, if its in ya, build a heating surface above the coils out of something that transfers heat fast and efficiently. How about............uuuhhhh.........aluminum, yeah that's the ticket. You can find a piece already cut to size where?......uuuhhh.....oh yeah that old coffee maker out in the garage.
Sorry. Heat control and even distribution are both very important to the long reaction. Neither can be adequately delivered from Wally's $9.99 hot plate (if they have one in stock.) If that's what you're stuck with, don't fret, just stay on top of it. (it would really help if you had some dope. Oh yeah, that's why you're here)
Visionware, which is that plastic impregnated glass that was so cool 15 years ago, heats evenly and is damn hard to break. (that doesn't mean it won't cause it damn sure will, just don't do something stupid like pour something cold in it when its hotter than hell)
I'd go with the dude's advice on the peanut oil. It sounds good to me, but you're gonna run 85-95 anyway so who cares, its not going anywhere. Cook the shit for a week, it will still look the same as when you started. (even generic vegetable oil)
Straight from a hot plate, wet sand would give the most stable results, but it takes forever to adjust the temp and keeping the moisture level good if you have never done wet sand before will surely precipitate the need for a shot of haldol before the reaction completes.
You know, forget all that.
Get a sauce pan from the kitchen. Put about 2-3 inches of cooking oil (your choice) in it, stick a candy thermometer on the side, don't let the probe get closer than 6-8mm (I think somebody already said this) to any surface, crank up the hotplate and get the oil as stable as possible at about 75-80C, then do your thing, adding the flask to the oil after the initial reaction has subsided (3-5 minutes). If you want to be anal about it (I, for one, don't have a clue who would) lift the flask up out of the oil every couple of minutes for the first half hour so that it will heat more gradually. After a few hours, shoot for the temp you want to stabalize on and let her rip. Give it a check at intervals (again, your call. There is no such thing as too many) and lift the flask out of the oil and give it a gentle swirl for a minute or so (don't slop the red all over the walls either) and remember, gotta must incorporate anal retentive techniques to ensure job security.
I'd love to show you the vacuum system I built for that dumbshit. He just turns it on when he needs it and turns it off when he's done, oblivious to the countless hours dedicated to evoke this response:
"I bet if you stuck your dick in there, it would yank the fucker right off."
Ya think?

Re: Any suggestions first?
hi gogo, i hope things up there in the land of the neon sign are running smoothly for you--a question if i may---friends always run with peanut oil, though your idea of a moist sand footing for flask rather than an oil based heat transfer medium appeals to me---so---does one just dig some garden dirt up,moisten it and bobs your uncle---or is a silica based sand better???--and is the sand moist, or wet, or a slush---specifically--how much water do friends add to the sand???--thanks for any input you can offer---good luck mate and may your emus never get amongst your chooks

Re: Any suggestions first?
Friggin oil in your sand. Damn, I'm glad I thought of that. Hey guys, guess what I just thought of? If you put an oil in your sand block, it would eliminate having to spray the sand with the squirt bottle 5-7 times every time you check and swirl your flask. (You ever sprayed cold water on a hot flask? Me neither and I sure as hell don't recommend it.) Remove flask first.
Boo yah! ballpeen--
It seems pretty stupid of me, all of a sudden, not to have thought of that when all that up and down, too wet, too dry was going on. I suppose I should get it out and distill some used solvents and try to work out the amounts and weight of oil that may work best. You can be relatively sure it will be one of the sewing machine oils though. Swigotta hasn't used the old sand set up in forever, but I remember the sand. Well, maybe not. It was some fine blast sand, but I forgot what size. Oh well, very small packs better assuring a good fit.
For less than a hundred bucks, you can get a glas col mantle and a variac. From then on you will wish there never was a thing called a hot plate.
Plan on spending most of a day figuring out where the dial setting is for each temp. After that, it's all downhill.
