Default Glassware?

SWIKB is looking for glassware. Yes i know of eBay and that scientific surplus web site. Just curious if anyone has any suggestions for local places to go to look. (besides stealing from chemistry class labs at local schools). Looking for the normal type stuff...flasks, etc. Oh and one more thing unfortunately Im in hell, aka Texas, which doesnt make it any easier. Thanks.

Be prepared to get in trouble for obtaining glassware without a licence in TX.

many feel that to do lab work you need lab glassware-----not so---yes it is preferable and if easily obtained then by all means acquire it--but make sure that the acquisition does not bring unwanted attention------on the previous page(page 2)you will see two posts, one named jars,the other named flasks,--these may be of some help--many here make use of the brand name pyrex---all here use there imagination to supplement with other products what can not be covertly acquired--do the same--beakers are merely heat proof jars--look at what you need and think of what else can do the same job---though, there are items that beggar replacing---one being a three necked reduction vessel, the other being a separatory funnel--both right up there on the handy list--if your really keen--travel interstate or make use of the services of a glassblower---so your from texas--i presume your texan--what is it with you guys, you all appear to have this bovine fetish--the offshore company i work for is based in houston and whilst transferred there it was obvious of your deep seated love for the species--in the bars, the toilets have bulls and heifers marking there entrance--go to a cattle yard and all the heifers have there arse to a solid fence and look at everyone very suspiciously--your accents could tear the ring from a wombat and every fucker is named billybob or lucylou--most strange--though i will admit you guys made me very welcome and were a pleasure to associatte with---good luck in your quest

Thanks for the info. My firend has the glassware he needs, all except something to cook with. I read about the preserve jars. When cooking I am assuming the vessel needs to be sealed but open occasionally. These preserve jars....to seal them can u just use the metal lid it came with? Also he has some other glass type vessels which would be perfect but don't know if it can withstand the 90C heat for 36 hours. Anyway to test glass to see how it will hold up in that type of situation? And no not originally from Texas thankfully. Only been here a year or so and hopefully only another year at most. Thanks again.

Just heat the glass with water in it. 90C isn't even the boiling temp of water, so if you can boil water in it, then you should be fine.

hi kahim, not knowing the synth your friend is trying to do, makes answering difficult---though from 90c for 36 hours one would ponder red/phos iodine---though to cook most synths in a sealed jar is a one way road to catastrophic consequences--you cant use metal lids as the solvents and chemicals will react with the metal causing either impurities to form, the metal to disolve, or both---as far as testing goes--duplicate what you intend to do but with placebo chemicals (so you dont lose a load if it blows the dunny door off)---but most heat proof glass can easily do much higher temp for much longer periods--just out of curiosity---where is kahimahola???

Well his plan came off of a post on this web site I beleive. He copied and pasted part of it to me. It is:

E=3

I=3.9

RP=3

DH2O=3.9

temp=gradual to 90C over 3 hrs.

time=36 hrs. (or longer)

I2 is divided into three. Second part added at 12 hrs and third at 24 hrs.

No premixing of HI. All components, including material to be reduced, are added at the same time. Sleepy hates this, but this ain't no pharma lab, things work a bit different in your basement.

If you have a better suggestion I am all ears. He has everything ready to go but is just nervous about the actual cooking since this is his first time to try anything like this so if you have a better suggestion for a newb he'd appreciate that.

Kahimohala is actually a mental institution in Hawaii. Its just an inside joke really to people who know about that place.

friends speciality is birching with sodium metal and ammonia----what you posted looks ok--should work--go check the red/phos iodine recipes at www.rhodium.ws (http://www.rhodium.ws)

then click on the chemistry page

Did'nt you know? Our cattle are what we affectionately refer to as "stump trained"...we stand on the stump, and they back right up to it!

Why do you think we have the cowboy-boots? So we can put there back legs in 'em so they can't get away from the biggo' dickin' Bobby Joe's about to give 'em!

....I ain't gonna' deny it, we got some hellafied accents...but y'all ought not be too stereotypical, that's like saying all black people eat chicken (which incidently has been discovered to be a scientific fact!), or all british people are up-tight, have a terrible sense of humor and teeth that'll scare ya' right back across "the pond"...and Australians are just red-neck Brits with a crocodile fetish. Our bovine decor primarily caters to the tourists...We have an old saying- "You can bullshit the tourists...but we live here"!

I mean all this lightly kirb, I wish I could travel and experience more cultures, I'm glad you got "southern hospitality" cause there's still a lot of southern hostillity....don't forget that Dallas is the home of the "Cowboys From Hell"(aka PANTERA) and we can quickly get FUCKING HOSTILE!....LOL PEACE!

Don't use regular glass jars for reactions like this, try and stick with borosilicate glass.

It isn't the heat resistance we are looking for when it comes to glassware. It is the resistance to thermal shock and the low thermal expandsion characteristics. You may get away with it a few times but there will always be that time the bottom cracks out of your vessel and your honey spills all over the floor.
