Phosphoric acid??
Recently, a post was written about phosphoric acid. Swis was sure it was phosphoric instead of phosphorus acid. Thirty
dollars a lb.(including shipping). Is this for real or a big mistake? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Swis knows that phosphoric acid is still legal to purchase.
Thanks

Hmmm, yeah, seems I was wrong to speak up for frog. Thought he'd been given a tough break, obviously not....

Re: Phosphoric acid??
Phosphoric acid hypothetically could be used
in place of hypo, I don't know that for a
fact but maybe someone does, just whatever
you would be using the hypo for replace it with phosphoric, at 30% a pound(what a gallon?) or two I don't see how getting some
and it not working be a drastic life changing
situation as you describe. Unless you are trying to clean your late grandfathers bronze
watchpieces or something.
In chemistry, it may not be useful as a replacement. Oxidation states of Hypo and
phosphoric are slightly different (I think)
SwiGotta could better explain this in detail
H2PO3 and H3PO4 but they both contain the
P (ion-element) so the hydrogen and oxygen are the only factors concerning the substitution of either in chemistry.
If RP oxidation state is +3 then find the overall oxidation state of hypo and phosphoric and compare the three. You decide if they can be substituted in chemistry.

Re: Phosphoric acid??
Well, for damn sure I have never done it, but WizardX says that H3PO4, phosphoric acid, a liquid that you can buy at hardware stores (don't even think about it. Hardware store phosphoric acid would be like making a milk shake using a dead cow's udder.)
Anyway, H3PO4 can be reacted with KI (potassium iodide) to make HI. The process is tedious and the somewhat large volume of HI thusly produced can eat a hole all the way through your foundation, not to mention your leg, maybe a testicle on the way. It also totally fucks up your boiling flask by leaving it encrusted with concrete.
It would be irresponsible of me to post the procedure as Swigotta has never even tried it.
Ain't no phosphorous acid, drop in the flakes technique, that's for sure.
OK froggy, is that good enough for a non reaction scheme, non stoichiometric answer to the question.
BTW, Wasn't that referenced in a post by Jam. Jam takes medication because he has to, you know; not because he wants to.hahahahaha.
For those interested, the hive has "recycling of HI and......"something else. That's enough to find it. All 214 posts of it.

Re: Phosphoric acid??
H3PO4 + KI = HI H2O P03 ?
no water.
H3PO4 + I2 = HI PI H2O4 ?
heh.. Hydrogen quadroxide. yah

Re: Phosphoric acid??
The reaction was intentionally only hinted at as it is not something that Swigotta can confirm, deny, or in any way recommend. It has been suggested by a credible source that this is indeed possible, not to mention within the abilities of one only moderately experienced in the field.
Actually, it sounds like something that you would probably be qualified to perform, pHrog, if you were so inclined.
Personally, I did well in chemistry, but not without a lot of work. I am far too lazy now to actually do anything that requires me to be physically involved. If Swigotta can't do it by himself, it ain't gonna get done. My only contribution is the same it has been all along. If he has a question (and he has thousands weekly) I find the answer and translate it into a form in which he can understand. That's it. The dude is awesome.
PS-- If you guys go back and read pHrogs posts as a compilation, you will see something characteristic about this type of person. (sounds like a woman. No offense if you're not froggy. Its actually a compliment in a way.)
Intelligent, witty, arrogant, condescending, taunting, combative, subtly inquisitive. Hmmmm..............hey fellas, what's that smell?
Who ya gonna call?
