Chemical Strengths
hey all....
question on chem strenghts. have searched and read many posts on this, but wasn't sure about a couple of things so will ask. hopefully won't offend anyone or sound stupid. the acetone & naptha are full professional strength. the muriatic is 68.5% hydrochloric and 31.45% hydrogen chloride. lye is 100%. if one were to imagine using these, would the chems need to be diluted? i have read in some earlier posts referring to 34% muriatic. does one need to dilute chems before using? thanks in advance for any tips!!

Re: Chemical Strengths
Cranknymph,
full strength materials will probably
be the best to use unless a certain strenght
is recommended. also I was under the impression
from mt lab class that Hydrochloric acid
is the same as Hydrogen Chloride only difference is chlo-RIC and chlo-RIDE.
kinda like sodium hydr-OXIDE and
sodium hydr-OXINE. What are you doing that needs diluted materials?

Re: Chemical Strengths
acetone is called extra strength, naptha is VM&P Naptha pure, the muriatic, hmmm....I'm not sure about the meaning of the 68.5%, but the 31.45% is correct. Swigotta dilutes the hcl with DH2O for titrating, but he doesn't measure it. He uses about 6 mls. in a 120 ml. baby food jar then filled 90% full with the D-water. Then pours "a little" into np for each pull till no more comes out. Lye, make a 20% solution for basing rxn fluid in np. Thats 20 grams to 80mls. DH2O. Pour water in all at once and stir. Be careful, this stuff burns like hell at this concentration. Vinegar helps if you get it on you. (acid neutralizes base and vice versa. baking soda for acid burn.)
I had to step out for a minute and when I got back I found Swigotta's wife sittin' at the computer reading this unfinished post. When she finished, she looked at me and said, "Be sure and tell 'em to remember to wear a thick shirt or somethin', 'cause you sure don't want to burn a nipple off with that lye." I said, "Well.....OK."
I wonder if she was speaking from experience.
Hmmmmmm???????????
Well, well, well. Hello froggy. A pleasure to make the acquaintance of a fellow med. tech. I just forgot everything your post said and I'm in edit mode and can't see it. Oh, well. Are you a student or a tech? Don't mean to be nosy, it just struck my eye. Ima dun the med tek thing fer bout 9 yeers now. Shur is fun playin wit all tat bodi fluid. (I have no idea why I felt the need to write country other than the fact I'm one of the few country assed med techs.
