Lukky D ?
Could you please shed some light on Geez's
different ratios in making crystals from 7%
tincture. Using this newer technique, is it better to use a whole bottle{12 oz.} or can you use 4 oz.? As always thanks.

Re: Lukky D ?
SWIL used 1/3 a bottle last time, and it yielded around 20 grams of I2. He says he will have to dig around in his archives a little more, and get back to ya with the exact ratios for Geez's newer I2 method.

Re: Lukky D ?
Swis would be so grateful to get 20 grms.
from a third of a bottle! Please post that
rxn if you don't mind. The last time swis
tried to harvest, all I got was grey mush. Maybe swis was heavy on the H2O2

Re: Lukky D ?
Did the grey mush sparkle???
That sounds like really wet I2. SWISB might have had the right thing.

Re: Lukky D ?
Alright, here it is. Straight from the Geez himself:
"SWIG recalled one of the mods mentioning that three pints of H2O2 was way too much peroxide to use with a pint of tincture (I seem to recall that comment coming from WizardX.) That thought stayed in the back of SWIG's mind. More is not better, etc. Stronger is not quicker, etc.
SWIG is used to varying yields from tincture, dependent it seems of the batch of tincture with yields from each store batch being about the same.
Recently he was shy a pint of H2O2 and did not want to drive to town for more, so he harvested the crystals using two bottles of peroxide instead of three. No difference in time. No real difference in yield. He noticed the I2 was grayer and dried better and reacted well.
He got ready to pull another pint of tincture and decided to see what would happen if he reduced the peroxide to one bottle. He added a cup of dH2O and an ounce and a half of HCl (shot glass-- a measurement SWIG understands) to the tincture. Then he added one pint of peroxide,-- slowly (over five minutes) with stirring. At twenty minutes from the start of the addition of peroxide, the bottom of the jar was full of spiky I2 crystals. Fluid was decanted into another gallon jug while the I2 in the first jug was repeatedly washed and cleaned and collected in a cloth filter.
After the first batch was compressed, smashed under the heel of the oppressor until bled dry of water, wrapped in dry paper and placed in the jar with epsom salts, he returned to the decanted fluid and reclaimed the I2 that had crystalized in it. (SWIG found long ago that there is some additional I2 to be had by letting the decanted liquid sit a little longer-- this varies from batch to batch, and is seldom more than four to five grams of I2--- but I2 is I2 and there is no need to toss it out with the mix.)
He has repeated this practice the last three times he pulled crystals from tincture. His yields are as good or better than his experience with three pints of peroxide. The yield could easily just be the new batch of tincture at the feed store. He has noticed, however, that the stuff is cleaner, it looks drier, it holds less water, and there is far less loss to black smudges and wet smears on the filters or paper it is dried in.
He said he suspected an excess of peroxide could contaminate the I2 and allow some of it to degrade while being stored; he noted this when diluting 35% peroxide to use for this purpose and leaving a bit too strong.
While the note about saving a buck's worth of H2O2 may seem fairly trivial, the idea about cleaner I2 and drier I2 would probably appeal to more folks than SWIG. For what it is worth, just passing the experience along.

So there ya have it. Just scale down or up any ratios for use.

Re: Lukky D ?
Is there a fl-Oz to ml conversion? Since SwiMs bottles are given in ml's only?

1 fluid ounce = 29.57 milliliter
here is the address to an excellent most complete conversion chart SWIM has ever seen.
