I was hoping that someone could help swim out and check these figures so I could tell 'em if his calculating skills are any good. Ok, here it is,(this is just in theory)...2floz of 2% iodine. Which is 60ml. To that he would add 15ml of acid, 30ml of H2o2, and 120ml of DH2o. Now are those numbers correct? Thanks in advance for any help.

Thats what I came up with.

Iodine tinc.= 100%

Muriatic (31-36%hcl)= 25%

H2O2 (3%)= 50%

DH2O= 200%

Your batch is way too small. Remember mechanical loss. The bigger the batch, the less overall loss due to mechanical loss.

The second greatest contributor to low yield is rushing the procedure. Go slow. Give it time to react.

Some may not have this problem, but to Swigotta its a messy job.

Also, don't be afraid of using more rinse water. It doesn't dissolve hardly any of the iodine because of its relative insolubility in water, but residual alcohol can kick ya in the nuts.

Hey thanks gotta, I appreciate the info. I enjoy your contributions to totse. Swim realized he was making way too small an amount but wanted to get his feet wet...so he would know exactly what he would see, and smell...more or less. It was a sloppy sort of experience for swim as well

SwiM say's he's got the above ingr. His I2 tinc. contains:

iodine BP 2.5% w/v, pottasium iodide BP 2.5% w/v, ethanol BP 89% v/v, purified water BP to 100%. He's got 100ml, how much I2 should he expect?

Could gotta (or any other kind soul) list the procedure for getting the I2 out?

He's seen the Rhodium write up but that contains H2SO4 in the procedure, which SwiM doesn't have.

looked for rhodium write up. could not find. does anyone have the method for getting crystals from bottles of iodine tincture? this would be extremely helpful for my paper.

cranknymph, look again at Rhodium, click on chemistry & go to the section marked 'inorganic', it's near the bottom of the page.

The write up you couldn't find is at the top of that section.

It is not the simplest write up SwiM has seen. Use the totse search engine for iodine, it should help you complete your paper.
