No doubt Swigotta will see slightly otherwise to SwiM on this, since SwiM's memory is shit (too much 'cid), but if he remembers correctly, here is Swigotta's modified:

Time, Temp, Glassware;

Time- min 12hrs (for impatient noobs, like SwiM), up to 36 hrs for the conniseur who insists on a complete rxn.

Temp- 70-90c.

Glassware- this has been well covered, but if you didn't see it, forget the test tube instead use a salt-shaker or some other flat-bottomed flask which is less than 150ml in volume.

Something else which has been well covered is the use of d-h20 instead of h2o2. SwiM read 1-1.5ml should be fine for curbs original amount.

swif thanks you for the fast response so if he uses curb original ing. amounts and that modified time temp, glass and distilled he should be dreaming in fast forward in 12+hrs

SwiM says he thinks so (was it a Q?), he ain't quite there though, so he can't personally vouch.

OK TP--

According to my wife, I've been spending entirely too much time trying to help young minds accomplish their goals when I should be spending more time with her and the kids. Well, she didn't say it exactly like that, but you get the picture.

Anyway, I can't argue with her, she's right and I have never said she wasn't. The problem is that I really enjoy getting online, logging on and seeing what is going on in the crazy world of lab tips.

Here, between my level of understanding and Swigotta's idiot savant recipe book, I can make a difference. In Beeville, you have to be cautious of everything you say and it is much better used as a reference library anyway. (Newbees should take that as a free gift for furthering their education) At Chemhead I had become interested in other areas of the site because of personal reasons. This is really the only place in which I can give something back for all the help I received only a short time ago.

Why do I insist on sharing some kind of deep ponderance everytime I answer one of these posts? Damn, what an idiot. I'm supposed to be spending less time here and I end up spending more time telling my friggin' life story. I guess it's part of the price you must pay to receive that of which you ask.

So, lets get started. I'm going to do a pasteup below of the modified curbshot nano. The original procedure, just the way Swigotta first wrote it will be in plain text. The notations I added a few months ago will be in bold. Responses from others here at totse at that time will be in italics and my new notations and such will be in [b][i]bold italics. OK, ya gott it? Good.

Make sure you find and read Curbshots nano. The actual procedure as written is primative and extremely wasteful, but the overall idea is quite brilliant.

This works:

Ratio for nano rp/i

Pseudo(ephedrine)=1

RP(really clean mbrp)=0.6 (soso clean)=1.0

Iodine (from 2%tincture)=1.5

decent small rb boiling flask (500ml)

heating mantle would be nice, but oil bath on hot plate will do.

Swigotta is quite fond of his mantles, controllers, and boiling flasks (rb=round bottom). My wife picked them up for him at Christmas time. He holds them quite dear and says he could not do without them. The mantles were a steal at 40 bucks (for both) and the rb boiling flasks are rare 500ml. single neck 10/?, I forget.......but they are very small necked flasks. They are absolutely perfect for performing nanos with balloon condensers.

large balloon (the kind with a rubberband attached for kids to bounce it on their hand)

twist ties and don't forget DH2O, the D means distilled, NO SUBSTITUTES.

Procedure

Make sure that your vessel (whatever it is that you plan to cook in) is as clean and dry as you are able to get it.

Add RP to flask followed by pseudo(ephedrine) both chopped up (rp ground up finely).

The rp is important to be ground up as finely as possible, the pseudo is not.

Add DH2O, amount depends on who you ask. You wanna go dry, use .5 ml. per gram of Iodine. You wanna go long and wet, use 1.0ml. per gram of Iodine.

Yes, I said per gram of iodine. Iodine is the primary controlling factor in the production of HI. Many cooks prefer to add the iodine in increments to insure even production of HI. These little modifications to the method will be added in as you become more comfortable and knowledgable of the reaction. There are many subtle nuiances that you will discover that will help you successfully achieve better quality and more complete reactions in the future. For now Keep It Simple Stupid.

Oh, yeah. There is really no such thing as the short, hot cook. I just added that in for those who advocate that kind of thing. After some experience under your belt, you can decide for yourself, but for now, know that the rection requires water and time to complete. Excessive heat causes side reactions that may get you high, but doesn't come from meth. Swigotta has received criticism for mixing all the reactants together. The actual reduction of the pseudo is done with 57% or higher HI or hydrioic acid. There are those who say thatit is necessary to make the hydriotic acid first, then add the pseudo for it to reduce. My point is, "If it is necessary to add more rp and possibly more iodine (depending on your personal preferences) why go through the trouble of making the HI in a separate step? Just to make sure the % is high enough? or there is enough water? I don't know why I'm even adding this, I don't really know the answer to these two questions.

I do know this: It is both possible and practical to add all the ingredients to the reaction at the same time. For a first timer, it is almost necessary. Sorry for the long interuption. I'll get back to the procedure now.

Mix.

Get your balloon ready and add the Iodine (dry iodine EXTRACTED and very DRY) to the mix.

If done properly you should get a rxn producing white smoke relatively soon, so get that balloon attached. Secure the balloon with twist ties tightened tightly around balloon and flask.

Cook it slowly (if long, slow is chosen) with only a few bubbles on surface of liquid, for about 12 to 30 hrs. Longer the better. If short is chosen, bubbles should cover the surface, not too vigorous, and cook for at least 3-6 hrs.

The smoke can be brown, red, yellow, as long as you get some kind of smoking reaction within about 45 seconds after adding and mixing (by slapping the flask against the side of your hand) in the iodine. Swigotta has increased the temp since he started to the area closer to 100C. He does this slowly over a period of 4 hours. If he has any trouble with the balloon expanding too fully, he simply removes the flask from the heat for am =minute or two, and loosens the ties on the balloon. Then he lets some air out of the balloon. Then he resecures everything and puts it back on the heat immediately. This keeps the balloon from breaking so easily. This is also a good time tojudge the amount of water you may want to add or iodine an even rp. I put it in here anyway, but that comes later.

Post rxn. you Gotta find out yourself.

[i]that seems kind of a short process.how well does this work.

This is a modified curbshot nano. It's easy if you follow the instructions. Go short and the product will be spacey and may leave ya' a bit irritable. Go long, not too hot, and your chances of first time success increases dramatically. It's not the cooking that's hard. In fact, it's the easiest, most enjoyable part. Gathering, extracting, all that crap sucks.

Used the above modification to curbshots

and got my FIRST successful rxn last night !!!! Tonights is going even better!

The trick is keeping everything CLEAN !

Spent two frustrating months of failures

but learned something from each one .

[i]Remember, take notes on exactly what you do each time. Then, if something goes wrong, or right (oh my, really?) you have a better understanding of what the cause was.

I apologize to all of you as well as my wife for spending so much time on this and making it sooooooooooooooo long. Copy it into a word processing program on your computer and move stuff around until you have the super simple starting procedure all by itself. Then, print it off and give it a whirl.

Its as easy as falling off a log.

Thanks for taking the time to get to this sentence.

PS--I don't want to proofread this right now. Feel free to point out any mistakes. It will be most helpful later.
