1% or 3.1% iodine make crystals?
(my fictional short-story)
I sent one of my monkeys to retrieve some 7% iodine tincture. I had, as usual, waited until the last minute to send him, and this time he didn't make it to the feed store in time. So he improvised, bullshitted with some old guy at a farm tractor supply place about "fighting dogs". He came back with a "mild iodine topical antiseptic" it was still for animals but it says 1% iodine by some table, and then it says 3.1% by v/v. I wouldn't know how to do the ratios to that or if it would even work. I'm used to the good 'ol 7% tinc- 1 pint gets 3 pints of peroxide etc. Does anyone know if this shit will work? If so, how do you mix your other ingredients? I have one gallon.
Thanks.
Also, I have never tried taking the dried, finished crystals and rinsing them with dh2o. Does anyone else recommend this?

Re: 1% or 3.1% iodine make crystals?
i dont think that the 1% iodine would work. in my dreams once i tried using betadine and it was a waste of 13 dollars. you can use iodine ticture though. i think it's like 2.5 % iodine or something like that. give or take. but if you use 16 ticture bottles to 1 pint of peroxide, with 1/2 cup of muratic and 1/2 gallon of distilled water. in about 45 minutes you should pull about 8 to 10 grams of i2. and i do recommend rinsing with dh20 until water runs clear. it cleans your crystals but dont worry their not solluable in water so youre not going to lose them

Re: 1% or 3.1% iodine make crystals?
Hello shooter
Tweekaneere, how about if we tweek those figures just a little. You want to use the minimum amount of H2O2 as possible to achieve the maximum amount of iodine available.
Now I don't claim to know the chemistry behind all this bullshit becuse I don't. What I do know is that too much H2O2 will cause the iodine to become sticky and wet looking when you are trying to dry it in the final filters. When you get the amount just right, you should get about a gram, per ounce of 2% tincture used, of silvery grey large flakey crystals that require less rinsing (although a half gallon is pretty good. Swigotta hates to skimp on the rinsing). They will also dry easier, leaving very little blue or black on the final filters. The resultant iodine, after being squeezed out with all the pressure you can muster, (stepping on it works good)should look like a dry grey rock. Break this up with a plastic or glass pointey object before you "bell jar" it in the freezer for a couple of hours. Then, when put in a jar and stored inside another jar with epsom salt, it will stay dry and crumbly for a while. I don't know how long, but so far a couple of months is for sure.
Damn ramblin on again.
Think about these numbers.
For that 7%, try doin it the Geez way. Add the H2O2 slowly, over a period of five minutes while stirring. Use 2 pints of H2O2 instead of three. I don't know about this personally as I don't get to do the 7% thing, but Geez is a very reliable old fart and he is quite confident that you will achieve better results with these simple modifications.
The reason 1% won't work is because of all the alcohol. Some part of the iodine or all of it or some shit dissolves in alcohol. Since it is an alcohol tincture, very low concentrations cannot overcome the solvent effect of the alcohol and therefore cannot fall out of the solution. Also, lower %'s ned more washing.
2% calculations-
Muritic acid -25% of total iodine tincture volume.
H2O2 -50% tincture volume
DH2O -200% tincture volume
Use even more distilled water to make sure they are very clean. They won't be as easy as that 7% was though.
One more thing. Swigotta likes to put th iodine crystals in the freezer during the oxidation stage (after you finish adding the peroxide) and leaving it for 4-6 hours. It wshes easier this way.
Oh, and don't try to evap off that alcohol unless you are prepared for the iodine to sublime. Subliming it is the best way, but I am not that patient and also won't comment on things not tried.
Tired and hungry. Gotta gotta gogo eat.

Re: 1% or 3.1% iodine make crystals?
Listen to SWIGotta, Tweek, only listen a little closer as we "tweek" those figures some more...
Now SWIL doesn't have the proper "files" with him, but he does know that the H202 is actually a 1:1 ratio. But like SWIGotta already mentioned, much patience is needed.
SWIL says he is going to run home to his archives and retrieve Geez's actual writeup.
Give him a day, and he should have it here.

Re: 1% or 3.1% iodine make crystals?
Thanks for the help bros, but I'm still confused. I know how to do the 7% tinc (although I will test your take your peroxide ssuggestion into considersation (keyboard fuckin' up) SWAZILLA uses it all the time.
This is what the label I have reads:
(equal to 1.0% titrable iodine) 3.1% v/v
I'm probablky not gonna' use the shit n-e-way!....but thanks.

Re: 1% or 3.1% iodine make crystals?
Swiss uses plenty of news-paper, Green-sheets free...Swiss pours his stuff through a 240count pillow-case, He does it in the bath-tub and rinses with "cold" tap water, but does a thorough Dh2o final rinse... And yes: He twists and wrenches that shit like He-Man! He transfers the goods to a few pages of newspaper, wrenches the fuck out of it and repeats the process until all the immediate wetness is sucked out by the newspaper. Then he usually puts it under something heavy like furniture, etc.,(but yesterday he laid his dick on top of it, and that sucker flattened all the moistier right out of 'em!) Just kidding....Actually, alot of times he's taken it and sandwiched it between two boards and put it in his trusty, toolbox-top mounted vice. I don't know if a truck could influence that much pressure upon them.
Swiss would like to try the "jar in the jar" rock salt drying idea. Please don't think him stupid but he can only assume that it is self-explainatory, and you place a smaller jar with rock salt in it, into a big jar, and surround the little jar with the goods. So you would probably leave the small jar uncovered, right? And probably cover the big one?
Also, I've read the rock salt, to be effective, needs to be heated at a certain temperature, for a certain amount of time. Could someone refresh Swiss on the specifics? Thanks.

Re: 1% or 3.1% iodine make crystals?
I know reposting a question from an unpopular thread is taboo, please forgive me...but, could someone give me the specifics (temp.,time etc.) of using rocksalt as an effective drying agent?
Thanks.
