? % Isopropyl Alcohol
If rubbing alcohol (70%alcohol/30%water)was dried using baked epsom salt, is there a way to check how much water remains in the alcohol? Thanks for any help

Re: ? % Isopropyl Alcohol
sparkey--
I really don't know just how that would come out as I have never tried to remove that much water from iso.
Automotive gas line dryer (one of them) is isopropyl. If its gas dryer and it says isopropyl, then its 99% unless otherwise noted.
To check for dryness, take the piece of glass from a 4X6 picture frame (or something similar). Clean it very well, then hold it close to a lightbulb for .....oh, maybe 30-45 seconds. Then, holding the glass at a very slight downward angle and still over the bulb, let a drop of your questionably dry iso roll down the glass. Watch it closely. If its dry, it should evaporate quickly, evenly, and leave nothing behind. If water is still in there, it will form micro droplets after the iso has evaporated. It doesn't require much heat for this, so don't get carried away with it.

Re: ? % Isopropyl Alcohol
This is absolutely true. Its amazing what you can find at the big hardware superstores just by turning the container around and reading the ingredients list. Try it. Its very educational.

Re: ? % Isopropyl Alcohol
almighty-- I appreciate the defense. This forum has become a place where punks and troublemakers are not slammed hard enough from the beginning and they end up clinging on and causing trouble for longer than they should. Then, someone makes a smartassed joke, knowing it will be ok because he knows enough about the other guy to do so, and someone else, who is tired of all the slamming, comes back defensively. (now that is one more fucked up sentence)
Anyway, I know pikk a little, so I knew what he was doin' (after my wife explained it to me), but it is also necessary for those who want to help to stick together and those who need help to pay attention to who really wants to pass along good information and who wants to blow you up with camera batteries.

Re: ? % Isopropyl Alcohol
C'mon Jade. I thought you were a charter member.
Those damn troublemakers writing so cryptically and confusing, filling the sentence with prepositional, as well as adverbial phrases; all the while putting commas everywhere, making 15 points, their subpoints, of course, making the sentence, for most people, that is those who can read, so lost, as far as following the original point, applying the information, and having a sentence so long it takes up the whole post, except for the actual useful, or perhaps pertinent, information, that is only a few words at the very bottom, thus making it very difficult for those, not unlike myself, that take great strides, or efforts, or painstaking steps to insure that we, those like myself, do not follow in their footsteps, or be lead by their wicked, wicked ways.
Ya know what I'm sayin'?
Since everybody wants to spew out brand names, let me clarify.
All of you are right and all of you are wrong. Yes, heet comes in a red bottle. No it's not iso, its methanol (also 99-100%).
Yes iso comes in a yellow bottle. no, its not called heet. It's called Iso heet.
Get it? Gott it. Good!
See how you troublemakers are. You made me wrong. Now, for the last time, cause I'm not gonna say it again--
Iso heet is in a friggin' red bottle with a yellow label.
You people are psycho. Right ma? I told 'em right, didn't I ma?

Re: ? % Isopropyl Alcohol
Thanks gotta and others for the info. The bottle of iso h**t in this area are also red with yellow label. It says: WARNING contains isopropyl alcohol (cas#67-63-0).
do not use near heat or flame avoid contact with eyes bla bla bla...there is no mention of purity on this bottle. The reason swim is interested is in the St8 2 E it calls for iso alcohol 91-99%. So swim wanted to make sure his inventory was up to snuff. Just wondering, how can swim figure out the % of content if it is not written on the label?
thanks again

Re: ? % Isopropyl Alcohol
Also Vons/Safeway stores in California sell 3 different Iso-Alc (rubbin) concentrations.
70%
91%
99%
(the 99% in my hood only comes in 473 ml for $1.09. Enough for 6.76 boxes worth of 48 60's extract soln.)

Re: ? % Isopropyl Alcohol
Say sparkey,
There are many ways to check. But the eazest one i can think of at this time go'es something like this .Get a GRADUATED CYLINDER or something like that .something that has good measurements markings on it.put your alcohol in it mark your findings
write them down now put your salt in your alcohol let it do its thing.now pour your alcohol back in you glass of measurements
check your math you should be able to get a good reading. Now this is not the most
accurate but for a quick eazy it should do you well.
