diacectalmorphine
Swim has 100 morphine sulfates does anyone have any good ideas for adding 2 acetal groups to the morphine molecule using readily avalible precursers also does swim have to turn it into the freebase form before adding the acetal groups any responces from a capable chemist would be GREATLY appreciated and swim would feel forever indebted to said chemist

Re: diacectalmorphine
if anyone can help me find a ghetto rigged way to make the inert atmosphere then I could just use the acetic anhydryde I know that N will work

Re: diacectalmorphine
you don't need an inert atmosphere to acetylate morphine with acetic anhydride. You should have a perfectly dry reaction and atmosphere. Just reflux with a molar excess of anhydride under a moisture trap and then workup, I'll leave the solvents and other details to you.
Man that would be nice to have that much morphine.

Re: diacectalmorphine
Theoretically, one could dissolve these morph sulfates in an acid, say vinegar? One could then then bubble acetylene gas through this solution, and the diacetyl-morphine would precipitate out. Acetylides are rarely soluble. I am unsure of this however, so it would be advantagous to try a nano reaction first to make sure.
This type of synth is used in explosives to convert nitrates to acetylides. A sulfate group is easier to react than a nitrate group so this will probably work. Likewise, a nitrate group is easier to react then an acetylide group. The whole she-bang revolves around breaking you compound into two distinct ions, a morphine ion and a sulfate ion, one then substitues a more electronegative ion for the original ion. It may be neccesary to nitrate SWIM's morph before acetylizing it.

Re: diacectalmorphine
I would have thought a simple sn1 reation my self ionize mophine and then replace It was on the rhodium site that I saw about the inert atmosphere stuff I dont see anypart that would react oxygen or anything else in the air .... thankx for some insight fellas
