the link here will take you to what I think is a great source of Iodine. SWIM is gonna run and grab a bottle or two and test the extraction to see if SWIM gets good crystals.

SWIL would be interested to see the Iodine percentage in that bottle. At $8 from petsmart, SWIL is guessing 2%.

Try a feed store, and 7% can be had for a few bucks more.

If that bottle is 7%, great find.

Seems my local Petsmart is outta stock on this item. Too bad they dont have an ingredients listing on the website. Not all is lost however! I went to a mom and pop salt water only fish store, and picked up a bottle of Kent Marine Iodine. Here are the particulars in laymans terms, as I am no chemist: Iodine content is 22.5mg/oz in an 8oz bottle. Other ingredients include: deionized water, potassium iodide, sodium iodide, sodim hydrogen carbonate, sodium carbonate, sodium tetraborate. I dont know if any of these chemicals will remain during the syntheses using peroxide/muriatic/dh2o...

my friend i'm afraid you are going to need something with alot more iodine to be of any use. 22mg per ounce is going to give around 170mg per bottle, and thats assuiming you managed to get 100% of it.

Garbage!! This is a trace mineral supplement and there is no worthwhile extractable iodine!

Leave it alone, save your money.

Tryp, I found out the hard way I guess! Doing the sysntheses outlined above, I have yet to see crystals fall. Oh well, I guess this is what it is all about...trial and too many errors! P Does anybody know whether or not the Providone in Providone-Iodine solution is going to get in the way of the syntheses? I had crystals fall when I used a bottle of Providone-Iodine however, I was left with a tar like glop. It was semi moist and hard to separate. I didnt think it would work so I tossed it. Any body know??

You can sublime the iodine out of the tar but your yield will be abbysmal.

Just look for non povi at the feed store.

Bullshit I atempted to extract exactly the same thing, all I got was a color change. Yea if you boil all the water away you will get less that onr gram of KI. Beleave me I had tried that before, I wasted my money.
