i need some help with making a pipe... anyone know a simple, cheapass way to drill a hole in the "bulb" of a pyrex erlenmeyer flask without shattering it?

Hmmm get a really really hot torch and heat it for a long time in one spot, till it is REALLY glowing, then blow in it really hard to pop a whole in it. the truth is that i have never done this with pyrex before so i am not sure, but it works when Im glass blowing. otherwise i believe you can buy drill bits for glass at department/hardware stores. just go nice and easy and those should work too. or just buy some glass tubing thats not pyrex and read a few general write ups on glass blowing. (its really easy) or just go to a head shop and buy a nice pizol to smoke out of that a proffesional made.

if the glass is "tempered" good luck!
It can't be heated, and drilling is tuff.

Why not use foil or a spoon?

Yes masta, yes.
Tell ya what happened. I got something off of ebay (can't remember what) and the guy threw in some odd stuff to make up for shipping. One of the things was two boxes of about 500 each of these 10mmX75mm disposable glass test tubes. I didn't know it at the time, but these are the greatest pipe making things on the planet. They are probably borosilicate glass and would suck if you had to pay 8-10 bucks each, but they are dirt cheap on ebay. Damn sure not suspicious.
If you go that route, all you need is a propane torch (which any real smoker must have) and some vinyl tubing that fits snugly in the tube end. Now, Swigotta must have gone through about 50 of them before he figured out how to form a perfect globe on the end. He can swirl about half a g in there, get a big ole ass kickin hit, and never lose a single wisp of smoke. Damn efficient. Maybe foil smokers have some dragon chasing technique that we just can't grasp, but from SWIG's experience they lose a lot of smoke, give sorry hits, and there's an aluminum taste that goes along for the ride.
These days Swigotta can crank out 3 or 4 custom made double or triple chambered pipes in a few minutes that will build a lung bursting cloud of smoke like none other. The best part is, when they get dirty, break, or wrinkle up, just make another one. (Well, if it breaks when there is still something in it, you gotta soak that sucka in some alkyhol first)
Anyway, if you come across some of these tubes, let me know and maybe I can help with some shortcuts so ya don't have to get frustrated and smash 10 of them on the bedroom floor. (the wife hate that)
Let it be known that gottagogo is a bit flaky. Sometimes he's on every day, others he's gone for a coupla weeks. Sorry, just that bipolar nature, I guess.

take a car air freshener (the glass tube ones with the fluid inside and the clothlike material in the top) Heat it evenly with a propane torch, hand held variety. turn the tube in your fingers to evenly heat, then slowly blow into the tube to grow a bubble. then heat one small area after getting bubble to taste. heat by holding part of bubble at side of flame. blow hard qquickly to create hole. Oh make sure you clean out the tube before heating it )

You can also make a bad ass bong-like thing out of glass. Get a test tube or air freshener and make a pipe like above, then get a graduated cylinder (if you can), make a hole in it and connect the pipe to it. Make a second hole on the opposite side, also. Then just hook some tubing from the end of the pipe to the bottom and put water in it. The hits you get from it are crazy.

Yeah, I posted that about drilling under oil, just use a diamond dremel bit, costs like 5 bucks, and put it in your drill. The oil lubricates and cleans away any glass dust.
Lookl into glass blowing, youll never try to make a bong out of a flask again.
BTW, from your post here and in DIY, it sounds like a Florence Flask, not Elernhymer Flask. An Elernhymer looks like an upside down funnel, while a florence is like a ball on a stick.

Dameth's way of doing it is a good way to start out, especially if you don't know where to get test tubes. The glass cigar tubes work very well too. If you are dealing with a thicker glass, buy a hotter type of propane gas. There are the blue ones, the black, and I think the yellow or the red cans burn the hottest. Get 'em at your local Home Depot, or any Walmart store.
BLOW SLOWLY @ FIRST!! or you'll screw up ur

Re: glass pipe help
Its almost a given that the pyrex has been tempered in a kiln. You won't be able to blow a hole through it, you'll just break it. More than likely if you try to drill it you'll also break it.
Just get a cigar tube and some MAPP gas. Thats how my old roomy taught me how to blow glass before I used the real thing.
FYI, professional glass blowers use an oxypropane setup. Its almost exactly like an oxyacetylene setup for plasma cutting, welding and heating. Just a different torch )and obviously propane instead of acetylene.) After the glass is blown it is tempered in a kiln just as metal is. Think of tempering as "setting" the object to hold a certain composure. Your pyrex flask is "set," its not moving. ;-)

Re: glass pipe help
Best Way to make the perfect size intake hole!
you need: 2-3 mm pyrex rod, Plyers (for cutting thin glass-Arc Joints), Torch
Directions: Take a 6 in. long peice of 2-3 mil pyrex rod and place in torch flame till molten. Let the molten tip gather into a little ball and smash it into a surface (Carbon plate) that wont melt. Smash so it forms a perfect, flat small, circle at tip of rod. Now place a small section of pipe where u want your hole in flame till molten. While still molten, place the rod end in the flame briefly and attach to molten spot on pipe (Do this in the flame quickly). Take it the joint out of flame and pull up so the glass streches into a small thin cone. Cut the cone near top so the new hole is some what small. Fire polish hole while blowing into the pipe. Done.
Rave ON!
