Radio cotroller
I've searched an searched for a simple cheap paired raidio controller, but found nothing. Oh "wise" Totseans, how do I build a cheap wireless radio circuit to trip a relay?
It must be cheap, because if everything goes well, it will have several thousand amps running through it shortly after activating.

Re: Radio cotroller
Why use wireless? Use a long cable.
Also, what do you plan on doing with several thousand amps and is your relay rated for such?

Re: Radio cotroller
The relay only needs to handle half an amp. A few seconds afterword, a high voltage, high amperage bolt will destroy it.
I will be using the circuit to launch a model rocket with a wire attatched to attract lightning. Using wires to lunch it would be a bad idea. I want to be far away from it when it strikes.

Re: Radio cotroller
I have seen the pros use those.... I am sure they sell things like that you just have to look around, it looks like a breaker box.
Good luck.

Idiot. You mean volts.
Just about anything in the home environment thats radio controlled can be made by adapting a remote control race car. Do that.

Re: Radio cotroller
You can either mod a remote control car for it. But the further you want to be away from it, the more expensive it's going to get.
But I think you best bet really is to just use wire. You can get maybe 50 metres of dual strand for a couple of quid.
Out of interest what are planning to use this set up for. I mean, if it gets hit by lighting, what then?
Oh, and have you thought that lighting will instantly melt your light weight (I imagine) wire.

Idiot. I mean both.

I'm not going to be using wire. What if the lightning decides to use the nice copper conductor laying on the ground to shock/kill me? Lightning has been known to do such things.
Of course the lightning will destroy the wire tied to the rocket. It merely provides a lower resistance path than the air. Once the leader ionizes the area around the wire, the bolt will strike, vaporizing it and the radio reciever.
Now, anyone have plans for the reciever? Radio cars suck (I've tried them), and are too expensive to use them destructively.

What's the point of this experiment exactly then?
Oh, and the problem isn't with the reciever of the car (although the aerial could probably do with a tweak) it's the strength of the transmitter.

Re: Radio cotroller
The point is to harness lightning to feed my...other project. The radio thing just happens to get in the way of the bolt.
You're probably right about the car, but it's still too expensive if I'm gonna be frying dozens of them.

if collecting lightening were as easy as you make it sound, the worlds energy problems would be NONEXISTANT....
Do you realize what you need to harness and store THAT much energy that occurs over a fraction of a second is never going to occur with some cheap homemade reciever.
Do you even realize how much energy a single bolt of lightning releases?
EDIT: Some Info, from http://www.boltlightningprotection.com/lightning_damage.htm
"The lightning stroke reaches temperatures of several tens of thousand degrees Kelvin, clearly sufficient to initiate combustion in many common materials..... The cloud-to-ground voltage of thunderheads can be many TENS OF MILLIONS volts, and the current in a lightning stroke can exceed 200 thousand amperes (>1000 times the typical household wiring capacity)...The energy released by a lightning strike can be of the order of 1010 Joules, more than the energy in 1000 gallons of gasoline or more than the energy of some bombs."
You can catch ^^THAT^^?

uhhh, 1010 Joules isnt that much. A simgle Calorie contains more than that.

Re: Radio cotroller
Attracting lightning is easy. Scientists do it all the time. The only problem is it's nearly impossible to store such a vast amount of energy and feed it into the electrical grid. You must use it all at once, which is what I'm going to do. (Can you say time machine?)
If you had read any of my earlier posts, you would know I'm not trying to attract lightning with a radio, dumbass. The radio is for firing my rocket remotely, which attracts the lightning. And did you not see my wikipedia quote on how much energy is in lightning? Try reading the entire thread before you post. If that fails, stick your hands in a blender, then I won't be bothered by your posts any more.

Re: Radio cotroller
This is what we used to do:
Get a cheap RC car.
Hook a relay to the wires that go to the motor.
Use the relay to switch on the solar igniter for the rocket.
Done.
It's super easy to get a lightning bolt to come down.

Well, now that you mention RC cars for the fifth time after I said it was too expensive...NO!
I should have known better than to ask for electronic circuits on totse...

Fuck off.
What do you want? You've come here, demanded plans for some vague idea you've had. Been given alternatives and rejected them all.

Re: Radio cotroller
The plans I want are perfectly clear: a cheap paired radio transmitter and reciever. Think of a bomb detenator.
The only alternative with real merit is the RC cars, but as I said, they are too expensive to be frying/detonating left and right.

I will, thank you.

Re: Radio cotroller
Last I checked cheap rc cars could be bought for less than 10 bucks. Just go to radio shack and buy the cheapest remote control car or object that they have, and quit being a dumbass. I doubt that once you factor in time cost and reliability, that the home made transmitter and reciever will come out on top.
I also doubt someone with your levels of intelligent would be able to build a transmitter and a reciever that work on the same frequency. Its clear you dont have any knowledge of electronics becuase you would have already thought about the all of the RF that the lightning is putting out and how that would mess up your idea of a planned launch. And if you had ANY idea of what you were doing than you would have been able to google some answers by now. I now that I have a few solutions, but I am not about to give them to some arrogant little 12 year old.

Yeah?
How about this: I recommended that because you are too stupid to build your own receiver and transmitter.
Fuck off.
