Is there a brand name for K Permanganate or something? I asked the chemist if they had any and he says "You wanna make a bomb?".

Is anyone who buys the stuff automatically suspected of making bombs? Im actually not planning on making a bomb with it I just wanna experiment with it to improve my chemistry skills.

None of the pharmacies I went to had it and all the pharmacists gave me suspicious looks and tone of voice when I asked for it. Why would they even sell the shit if they think anyone that buys it is gonna blow shit up with it.

Apothecary:

My poverty, but not my will, consents.

KMnO4 may be just a tad too dangerous for beginners experimenting, then again, so is most evrything in this hobby.

Anyways ... what were you planning to do with it?

Go to a chemist and try to find it. It comes in small tubs.

If they ask you what for, just say your little brother has excsma (sp?), and you need the permanganate for a soothing bath.

Next time, wiki something before attempting to buy it, that way, you know what it's meant to be used for.

wiki:Biomedical uses

* Dilute solutions are used as a treatment for canker sores (ulcers) (0.25%), disinfectant for the hands (about 1%) and treatment for mild pompholyx dermatitis or fungal infections of the hands or feet.

* A dilute solution of acidified potassium permanganate is used in histology to bleach melanin which obscures tissue detail.

* Potassium permanganate can be used to differentiate amyloid AA from other types of amyloid pathologically deposited in body tissues. Incubation of fixed tissue with potassium permanganate will prevent amyloid AA from staining with congo red whereas other types of amyloid are unaffected.[8][9]

Well I have a big scar on my forehead so that was my reason for buying it. The pharmacist didnt seem to believe me though.

Id only be experimenting with tiny amounts not enough to do any damage to me if it blew up. I just wanted to see how it interacted with other chemicals (outdoors of course with gloves eye protection etc.) and to see how it burns in low amounts.

Pharmacys in the states rarely have anything of value. And if its of value the price is so jacked up that you could buy several pounds at another store for the same price.

Chemists in europe as i understand it would have it, but what with recent bombings and all they might not be so keen on selling it to kids.

So yeah, i don't actually have any advice for you.

Hardware stores sell it in 5 pound jugs for removing iron from pipes or something. It is right next to hydrochloric acid, and sulphuric acid at the place I usually go to.

They sell KMnO4 for use with water softeners:

Filters

Installation of a whole house filter loaded with a media that is specific for hydrogen sulfide removal is successful many times. These types of filters must be recharged with chlorine or potassium permanganate. The removal capacities of these types of filters are usually fairly low, and must be sized to contain enough media to prevent premature exhaustion, and subsequent passage of the smell to service. It is also typical that the amount of hydrogen sulfide can fluctuate rapidly, causing great difficulty in sizing the unit. In addition, potassium permanganate is extremely "messy", and will leave stains that are very difficult to remove.
