I've done KNO3\Su and BP and Ive decided to try flash powder. From my research I've found several different variations on it, KClO4\Al, KClO3\Al, KNO3\Mg\S, etc.
Anyways I was wondering, based on your personal experience, what the "best" mix is, based on effectiveness, sensitivity, cost and ease of procurability. thanks.

A constant state of depression

The industry standard is KClO4 + Al. Mg will be a bit more powerful.

Wait, quick question. The oxidizer in KClO4 is the Cl, right? Because the O's are more electronegative, and get the electrons when it splits, leaving Cl+7? Then the Cl+7 oxidizes the neutral metal like Al or Mg, right?

It doesn't really get to +7, I don't know the exat reaction mechanism, but yes, the chlorine atom oxidoses the Al or Mg.
Now, It could be:
KClO4 → KCl + 2O2
It first oxidises the oxygen, and then the oxygen oxidised the Al/Mg.
Or there could be a direct electron transfer between the KClO4 and metal ... don't ask me how tough.

I heard that KClO3\Al and KNO3\Mg\S were quite a bit more sensitive than KClO4\Al, but I don't know how I would get any potassium perchlorate, so specifically how do KClO3\Al and KNO3\Mg\S compare in effectiveness and sensitivity
Also, would KNO3/Al work?

Its not flash but I think I'll post it. I mixed a bunch of AL(Very low mesh), Steal(Very low mesh), PN, and Sugar togther and lit it with some fuse. It dident light, so I added some more PN and Sugar. Then, It lit and put off about the same amount of smoke as normal SM but had a lot less flame(Amolst none) and burned a lot slower. When it was done, there was a molten black slurry pile. I'll do look at it in awhile when its cool.

A bit more powerful doesn't cover it. I had some in a thick cardboard tube that was not plugged at the top and the blast was still sufficient to obliterate the tube with a report that left my ears ringing.

Remember that any comp with S will be very friction sensitive.

like Zn/S? KNO3/C/S? KMnO4/S/Al?
Just because sulpher is incompatible with certain chemicals doesn't mean that all sulpher containing compositions are sensitive.

Re: Best Flash Mixes?
The only problem with KNO3/Mg is that KNO3 is hygroscopic and Mg can ignight when it comes in to contact with moisture. Mixing the two could cause some problems. Just keep it dry and store it in an air tight container.
Al flash is much safer than Mg flash.

Re: Best Flash Mixes?
Flash powders I've made and a few comments:
1.KClO4/Al- This is the grand master of flashes. I used 2 micron flake Al so you know it was fast. And when I had chinese air- milled perc it was ridiculous. That perc flowed so easy it was orgasmic. The two components practically mixed themselves.
2.KNO3/S/Al- Heh, this comp was unusually difficult to light, but that was probably because my KNO3 was a little coarse compared to the other two components. It didn't light until a few seconds under a blow torch! When it did light though, it burnt faster than ,say, some fast BP. So it's a good alternative. Grind your KNO3 down to a fine powder and it should work quite nicely.
3.KNO3/Mg- Due to the large particle size of the KNO3 and Mg I used, I cannot say anything conclusive about his comp. It burned slow like crudely made BP. I'll have to try it again myself with finer powders.
Sensitivity- Keep moisture out of 2 and 3 at all costs. But you should keep moisture out all your comps. Who the hell lets their comps get wet/abosrb moisture freely? Don't store mixed comps either. There's no reason to, it's stupid.

Hah. Good point. I was just thinking about the most obvious comps.
