Exploding Dye Packs?
Now here's a thought. Does anyone know anything about the exploding dye packs that they use on bank robbers here in the US? -Rod-

Re: Exploding Dye Packs?
I don't know everything about them, but my mom has been a banker for a while. Basically, the dye packs are a thin sheet of plastic that contains some type of die, obviously, a radio reciever, and some other chemicals. These can be placed in the middle of stacks of cash, without the robbers knowing about them because they relatively thin. When the robber walks out, the radio transmitter, usually near the entrances/exits of the bank will emit a frequency, and the reciever will read the frequency, and usually the ignitor, or whatever it is, is usually on a delay of some sort. When they go off, they release the dye and smoke, and the chemicals heat up to around 450 degrees Fahenheit. I guess this was useless because you probably wanted to know what makes them explode, in which I don't know.

Re: Exploding Dye Packs?
They probably have a mix of visible purple dye as well as UV dye to help identify individuals/money. If the receiver is at the door, you could look through your cash before leaving the building (as long as you move fast!) and remove them to keep your money nice and crisp. But this isn't really the right place to be talking about robbing banks...

Re: Exploding Dye Packs?
I never thought of that! I will tell her to try and "get" me one, and I will take pictures if anyone would like them. I can try and figure out what goes on inside them. They must be pretty 1337 to have a reciever in them, while remaining that thin.

Re: Exploding Dye Packs?
I talked to her, and she said that they keep one, maybe two of these dye packs at each teller position, under all of the $20 bills and the $50 bills if there are two of them. Supposedly, right underneath where the pack(s) sit, it is magnetized, and I guess the reciever won't be able to recieve any of the frequencies, so in turn it won't go off. She said she might be able to get one, but they know how many each teller has for some reason, but she said she would try to figure out a way, hopefully.
