Default Could someone explain the xmas light ignitor to me?

I read about it on krimzonpyro or something, but I'm having trouble understanding it completely. Let me see if I have this: Break the bulb so the filament is exposed to the explosive, wrap the filament part into the explosive like you would a fuse, and plug the cord into an outlet? Wouldn't that short out the outlet's fuse? I don't get it.

Also, if you have any form of time delay other than a long fuse, I'd like to hear it.

you dont plug it into an outlet you connect it to a small battery.

tear the filter off a cigarette and stick the fuse in. light the cig and when it burns down to the fuse it will light it(hopefully. ive heard of using incense sticks also.

ive never used any time delay or anything besides an estes rocket igniter, so i dont know how well these will work from experience, just stuff ive heard.

9v batteries are better than aa's or lantern, plus the fact that 9volts of elecric current is sure to set off it due to the fact that each bulb is designed for 1 v

and 9v's makes a normal bulb really bright.

The mechanism:

A light filament is made of very thin tungsten and it has a high resistance yet is very strong when glowing hot. Essentially when current runs through the filament it heats up and gives out light. When it is exposed to a heat sensitive composition it heatys up and ignites it.

I find medium grade steel wool much cheaper.

OK heres a link to a good site that explains how to make them its under Experiments then under Electronic Detonator manufacture.

http://brainfever.2ya.com/

its a good site by one of the E&W members also has some good links too.

Also for a battery I would use a 9v or if your like me I use 3 9v in parell to increase the current lost when using 150' of wire or several ignitors at once.

My methos is slightly differant than most peoples i think.

get a regular small christmas light, color doesnt matter.

Get the tip off so the wire inside isnt damaged, i use a file.

Here's where its differant. This is not necesarry, but it makes using it a little bit easier.

Take a bit of Blackpowder (or other powder, i imagine flash would work great, but you dont really need anything stronger than BP) and put it inside the bulb. then cover with a small piece of tissue paper and secure it with a bit of tape.

This way you dont have to worry about making sure the explosive touches the filiment, just stick it in. The bulb ignites the bp, the bp in the bulb ignites the main explosive and the main explosive (hopefully) goes boom. You can make a bunch of these at one time, it will save time at your blast site.

i do it the same way, except instead of a file i snap the tip with pliers.

What would cause the filaments to be fouled? Being bent or touched? I keep destroying the bulbs when I try to open the glass, but I don't know how.

Try using a sharping stone one of the ceramis ones or a dimond dusted one make sures its fine or ultra fine stone and use the edge to gently scratch a line around the bulb this will give it somewhere to crack then just break with pliers or fingers if but wear gloves

Thats the best site i've seen that shows how to make them, very easy to understand too. Before, I thought that they were supposed to be placed back in the socket.

The best way is to use a grinder and grind it slowly. Don't pack in the bp either, because the wire inside is fragile enough to get broken by just blowing on it. Which kind of wire is best to use for long distance ignitions?

Here are some pics to show how it works:

I tried setting off a plastic egg filled with BP using the xmas light method, and I never got the damn thing to work. I tested the lights, the lights worked. I filled a few with BP and set them off outside of the egg, they worked. I tested the connection between the bulbs and the extention cord I was using, it worked. But every fucking time I tried to set off the egg (and I tried a lot), it didn't work. I'm pissed off right now.

Is the BP in the egg in direct contact with the igniter?

ive tried the xmas igniter but i used AP in one once. it was probally the loudest device i have ever tried and it seemed louder than a BP filled COB. this may be enough to set off the egg if it was placed inside the egg, not just taped to the outside.

What sort of wire do you use to put distance between you and the igniter?

in my experiance it doesent matter what kind of wire is used just that its not too thick or power will be lost. i just used some old speaker wire i found in my granddparents basement.

Yes, it's completely covering the igniter. I'm using a chopped up extention cord for the distance.

Cat5e internal wire would be usefull! and besides a computer only uses 4 of the wires. So you could remove 4 of them and still use the internet

WRONG CAT5 uses 8 wires and a computer uses all of them.

Cat5 works good I've used it I got a spool of 1000' here at home I use it for my LAN parties and Networking the house hehe.

I've found that speaker wire works very good also its cheap. If all else fails you can use whatever you have on hand the smaller the better that way you wont lose too much current.

As for why your egg didnt work Im not sure it could be that your wire has a bad connection or you loosing too much curent I woud suggest using 2 9v batteries together that will give you more current and should help. Also it could be that the ignitor you made for the egg is a dud if you broke the filiment making it then it wont work if you only using 9v you would have to use something will a little more current like a Car battery hehe.

From http://members.odinsrage.com/white88/20_ImprovisedInitiators.htm (a nice site about improvised ignitors, if a little militant and white-supremacist):
