Howdy,
On occasion at the firing range people will set up short demonstrations of explosives that can be set off by the shockwave of a bullet. I'm looking for such an explosive for a demo of my own. More than likely the bullet I'd be firing would be traveling at least 3000feet per second. Can anyone give me some help? -Rod-
PS...is there a "school" that teaches this stuff which would allow me to work towards an FFL license? THX!

Well perhaps any primary can be set off with a bullet.
But the supersenisitve nitrogen trichloride, nitrogen triiodine, and nitrogen tri bromide, very senistive.

Armstrong's powder is friction, impact and heat sensitive. I'm not sure how powerful it is, but you could use it as a base to set off flash or something.

I wouldnt suggest armstrongs, since it is highly unlikely you will ever find red phosphorous.
Potassium chlorate and antonimy trisulfide 1/1 ratio is perfect.

OK one very few Firearms have the power to perpell a round at 3000fps most are around 2000fps to 2400fps. Also just about any primary would work I have set off AP based charges with a .22cal before. If i remember right they had a topic like this over on E&W and i beleve they discused the use of some sort of AN mixture with a primary mixed in to increese its sinsitivity but still make it safe to handle. If i remember right it was very dificult to set off with anythign but a high velocity impact. I beleve they used around 100g charger about 6" by 6" for there tests but im not sure.
I do know that in some states they used to hold Dynamite shoots as they were called they were contests where different competers shot at sticks of dynamite at different ranges from 500m up to 1200m but they dont use dynamite any more for them just a large woden stick to represent it.

Here is a place to get Phosphorus Red: http://www.expeditedchemicals.com/ I've bought potassium perchlorate off of them in an ebay auction and they didn't check ID, but I'm not sure about the store.

Most likely the Red P will get stoped by U.S customs.

Yeah, it probably would unless they shipped it illegally. It might work though for someone who lives in Canada and has the money to buy it.

Firebomb,
Depends on how you define "few" I guess. Almost all of my .223 loads are in the 3200-3700fps range. About 1/2 my .243 loads are in the 3500-4000fps range. As bullet weight (in grains) goes up, velocity necessarily goes down as a function of case capacity versus barrel pressures. I actually worked up a .223 load (I do all my own reloading) that would push a 40gr bullet 5,000fps or thereabouts. Trouble is it'd be highly unlikely that the barrel would survive and equally unlikely that the slug itself would survive. It'd be nice if my head wasn't removed in the process as well
Thanks for the answers, gang. I got to thinking, sometimes the simplest answer is the easiest. How about caps? Y'know...the paper jobbies we used to play with as kids in toy guns? Bullet hits cap, cap sets off secondary? -Rod-

Re: Shock Sensitive Compound Wanted
Wouldnt the muzzle sound and the sonic crack cover up the noise of the explosive going off. Unless you used a few grams, I doubt you would be able to tell a difference. Im just wondering becuase those .243s are LOUD!

Re: Shock Sensitive Compound Wanted
A .243 isn't that loud. It'll hurt your ears if you aren't wearing protection but in the grand scheme of things, it's a pretty small cartridge. If I knew how to post pics here, I could show you an example of what large is
Tannerite. I've seen it used before and it makes a sizable bang. Someone told me at a demo that it needed about 1700fps minimum to go off, and that was with a 168gr bullet.
Anyone know what it's made out of? It's apparently a binary. -Rod-

Re: Shock Sensitive Compound Wanted
I'm sure the composition is secrect.
Damn'it, so don't you think a 55 grain FMJ .223(mycaliber) would set one off? Because it says any centerfire rifle cartridge will work.

Jackal,
I'm sure a .223 would, yeah, unless you're shooting a subsonic round.
Yeah, the composition is certainly a secret, but someone may have some ideas on what it could be -Rod-

Slith,
Nothing wrong with it that I can see, at all. Of course, if there was something wrong with it, I sure as hell wouldn't know. I'm just a dumbass. And Pyro's recent problems make me wary of shipping chemicals here, y'know?

Re: Shock Sensitive Compound Wanted
I have this neighbor who was shooting explosive targets a while back. We couldn't figure out what the hell kind of gun he was shooting. A week later my dad was over at his house and he said that the guy was shooting the exploding targets...You can definatly hear the sound of the target after the gunshot. I think he was using a .22 rifle to shoot the targets. That guy scares me though...he claims to have quite a collection of guns, including a few ak-47s. He sits in his wheelchair and shoots beavers with them in the swamp behind his house.

I started that thread. I finally bought some of those flash targets. They have light grey flash in them. Its pretty strong stuff. Theres approx 2-3 grams in each one, so its a pretty good boom. However I had trouble setting them off with my .22.

Re: Shock Sensitive Compound Wanted
Rod: Your safest bet would be to get ahold of a commercial blasting cap and use that. Loudest bang, plus it's more safe than homemade stuff.
For a LE, though, try pottassium chlorate/antimony trisulfide. LE's would be a little trickier, because of the required confinement, and the slug could destroy that.
BTW, anyone here ever shot a .300 magnum? My dad just inherited some property in British Columbia, and it's grizzly-infested. We're gonna arm ourselves with a 12 gauge shooting slugs and one or 2 .300 mags. I'm wondering what they're like, I've heard the recoil is killer.

Re: Shock Sensitive Compound Wanted
A sub sonic .223?
Ive shot the 300 magnum a few times, but I do not own one. The recoil to me is about like the 7mm mag or the .30-06, which if handled right will not be too bad. They are one of the most accurate guns Ive ever shot, especially at 200 yards.
BTW I was using 230 grainers. Im not sure how hard lighter loads kick, but if you hunting heavy loads should be used anyway.
