hi i am tryin to make flash powder but i cant buy aluminum powder online cause i'm too young and i cant get a ball mill(or make one) can i just press aluminum foil then grind it with a dremel or grinder or sumthin? any help is appreciated

You shouldnt start off making flash powder, but instead make black powder salutes. People who make flash powder before black powder or even smoke mix really piss me off, since to me it shows immaturity.

Go to the local wal mart, and buy a pack of C or D model rocket engines. Unroll the cardboard casing, and when you get the the core, tear the clay, the smoke delay, and the burst charge. Place the core in a tupperware container, and crush the black powder core with a hammer or a 10 pound lifting weight (as I do). Crush the core until you are left with a fine powder.

Instead of trying to get aluminum, make some salutes with the black powder you just got, and after a few salutes with rocket engine powder you can make your own black powder, and then be on to flash powders.

yeah i know i already made bp salutes out of estes engines but i cant make bp cause i cant get sulfur or charcoal and i cant bal mill it cause i dont have a ball mill

Grinding Al foil in a coffee grinder works but Isen't really worth it. You get Al powder of less then 100mesh. I tried to make my own flash using my coffee grinder Al powder. It burns fairly slow.

yeah Al foil in a coffee grinder works but once that is done you have to mill it

my first ball mill was made out of a old low rpm drill some .50 cal lead balls and an old stump remover container ... then all i did was stick the longest peice of coat hanger threw the centre of it glued it in place made a little stand for it to rest on taped down the button let it run for about 5-10 min came back shut it off and let it rest and then did that for about 2-3 hours .. worked fairly well

1: Buy at Harware store:

Couple AL rods

Fine file

5 gallon bucket



2: Find someone with a drill press.

Put a rod in press where drill bit would go. Make the rod shorter if you have to.



3: Put bucket under rod. Raise bucket till its around rod [say if you dont understand].



4: Turn on drill.



5: Hold file on bottom of rod and file away.



6: Empty filed AL out of bucket.



dont know mesh and dont realy care cause it works for flash.

Yes I did that before. But not very often.

How fine do you think it would be possible to get Al powder, by mortar, and pestling reasonably fine filings?

Using a mortor and pestel would never work it would take several hours just to get a few grams and its not worth it.

You could just get something made out of AL and then get a file or sandpaper around 400 to 600 grit and just sand the hell out of it hehe. I did that a while back took forever but in the end I got about 50 grams lol.
