Default Pure Potassium

I was wondering if there was some way to maybe extract the Potassium from Potassium nitrate, potassium chlorate, etc. and purify it? I think that it would be a waste of time to do it, I was just wondering.

No with those you wont be able to do it, KOH is the bets starter thats easily obtainible mabey KCL but im not sure its better than KOH.

You would have to use electrolsis of the molten KOH, and then crash the product into some chilled xenlen or what ever its caled dimethylbenzene for it to cool. Ligter fluid will work to but not as good.

This is a hard synth and its dangerous as well the yeild will be low and its not even likely to work, its hard to get right but thats how it can be done, you will need a dc device, a crucible, and some electrodes as well a a heat source.

Thanks for tackling my question, I just wanted to see if it could be done. Plus I wanted to see who would answer the question.

This is not something the unequiped will be able to do, or should even attempt. More for the sake of wasting money, but safety is still a factor.

BTW It doesn't matter if you use xylene, toluene, or lighter fluid to store the pottasium produced. Any mineral spirits(non polar) Will do, prefferably pre dried with at least some anhydrous MgSO4.

you can i've tried it before but you need to get the temperature of salt up to the point where it'll melt and then you have to deal with the chlorine gas that is released due to the electrolysis.. and to make it even more challenging you have to get the sodium out without exposing it to oxygen or water

Sodium is commercially produced through the electrolysis of molten NaCl. Of course, that isn't exactly practical or the home chemist. If you really want to produce it, NaOH is a more suitable reagent. Then again, sodium isn't really that great. I have some still stored under paraffin oil. It's really nothing that amazing.
