Best method for cherry bomb construction?
Tube salutes having been the only real LE devices I've made, I was thinking I'd like to try making a cherry bomb. I remember United Nuclear's old Cherry Bomb page using paper cups tumbled in sodium silicate solution and sawdust, but I don't have any tumbler/ball mill to accomplish this with.
Rat_Bastard has the neat idea of using beer bottle widgets as casings, but I'm wary of the shrapnel possibly created by plastic casings. Any suggestions?

Re: Best method for cherry bomb construction?
cherry bomb made out crackle ball casings are pretty good if in a rush. take the dragons eggs out of the casing and fill the casing 1/2 to 3/4 full of your favorite explosive. then add the fuse or a sparkler and then you could either wrap it in duct tape or give it a few layers of plastic model cement. the size of the casing is perfect for an immatation cherry bomb.
methode the second you could use a round smoke ball. all you have to do is light the smoke ball and then take a screwdriver and hollow out the insides. fill with explosive. this may help a bit. copy and paste. option cover it with white glue and sawdust then paint it red. http://www.geocities.com/kingpyro2002/smokeballsbefore.jpg

Re: Best method for cherry bomb construction?
Chances are pretty good you wont have to worry about shrapnel from the beer widget cherry bombs, but you should still get back (common sense) and you won't have to worry about it.

I have a page on how to make cherry bombs. I use ping pong balls now instead of paper cups, since they are much larger, and they hold a lot more powder.

Re: Best method for cherry bomb construction?
Using a paper casing and palstic casing will provide different results. I highly suggest paper over plastic with cherry bombs.
It isn't too hard and you don't really need a ball mill grinder.
There instructions somewhere on Pyro Supreme www.angelfire.com/theforce/highexplosives (http://www.angelfire.com/theforce/highexplosives)

Re: Best method for cherry bomb construction?
I should be getting my plastic cherry bomb balls tommaro, so I will tell you how they are, and if they work alright.
All im going to do is spray paint them red, for effect... and maybe wrap them around in electric tape.

Re: Best method for cherry bomb construction?
I use UN's method with my homemade paper cups. Instead of putting them in a rock tumbler, I mix a 1/1 ratio of sawdust and Elmer's glue and mold it over the paper cups(of course with the flash and fuse in them). So far I've made seven. I shall have some pics and vids soon.

As discussed in Rat_Bastard's section about cherry bombs, ping pong balls are a very weak container even when coated with epoxy or duct tape (even though it retracts from the aesthetics).

Cannonfuse's plastic ball shells are crap.
They are the EXACT same plastic ball shells as pyrotek.org, but with *incredibly* higher pricing.
7/8" diameter? That's barely enough for a gram, packed.

Re: Best method for cherry bomb construction?
I know the ping pong cases are weak, but put 8 grams of black powder and a 1/4 inch thick wall of wood glue and saw dust all the way around the ball and you will get a noise just as loud as UNs beefy tubes filled with 7/3 flash powder.
