Re: how to make my own rocket
well, i'll try to help you, although i have no personal experience with rocketry, because in my country epoxy putty is so damn hard to find... argh
well. first, check out frogfot's page: http://www.geocities.com/frogfot/
it's a very nice one, about HEs, pyrotechnics, and also rocketry (included in the pyrotechnics-section). basically, rocket engines are made out of KNO3 (potassium nitrate) and sugar. you probably know that from smoke devices, i guess the ratio for using it as a rocket fuel is 50/50, not 60/40 (by weight).
as said, i have no experience with it, so i just guess. first, you have to prepare the rocket fuel (there's the 50/50 rocket fuel, and also some kind of rocket fuel which uses KNO3, sugar and sulfur), then put it into a tube, make a nozzle out of water putty or epoxy putty, fuse it, et voilá, done. just glue it to a stick, and you're fine.
again, i repeat. i have NO experience with rockets, so i suggest just visiting frofot's page, as it also shows pictures of the making process.

go there it is my basic site... took me a while to add some of the grammer but hell it will work ..
click on the rocketry menu and it will tell you every thing you need to know about *model* rocketry
i have not added a section yet for compostite high powered rockets but am working on one as we speak

Re: how to make my own rocket
I'm pretty sure the kno3/sugar smokebomb recipie makes a decent rocket propellant.

it does but the process of making the engine is a pain in the ass and although it if you got it down packed it is easy it is not allways reliable and you have to get the right nozzle length and the throat has to be a certain dia. so in essacne it is worht it if you know how but a pain in the ass if you don't in my KNO3 sucrous rocket propellents i use dextrin to bind it together and i also have Iron powder as a catalyst all binded together
then it has to be a core burning engine and the core has to be primed and then you have to figure out how to ignite it at the top and also incorperate a time delay and a ejection charge ...

Re: how to make my own rocket
Even 1% iron helps the burn rate dramitcaly, Melted is a pain and im not sure if its the best way, next time im doing recrysatalized kno3/sugar, then i will mill it with iron and dextrin then pack it in very goodwith a heavy weight, then drill out the center and pime with bp. then fire...

Re: how to make my own rocket
i roll my own tube then i have a spindle that is places on the end of a dowel so that the tube can slip over the dowel and the spindle is inside then i fill with my mix and ram it with my ram rod which is metal and the spindle goes down the inside of the rame so that you can rame it real hard .. im thinking of building a hydrolic press for my engines next
it should prove to be interesting

Re: how to make my own rocket
I'm just getting in to basic rocketery, mostly due to time constraints, nowhere safe to launch them, and inability to get kno3, also, this is my first explosive/propellant. Many people, including Davidthepyro, said "start off with the kno3/sugar mix". I am not going for perfect performance, so, it's just a couple simple 1/2 inch rockets for now, which will work reasonably well without a nozzle, powered by the 24.5% sugar/74.5& kno3/2% iron oxide mixture. Is a primed core required for a rocket that small?

Re: how to make my own rocket
i have a bunch of paper tubes that are weak, but i will coat them in glue. anyway the id is 3/8in. i want to make a rocket that will go twice as high as a bottle rocket, or just a small rocket to begin with. nothing too big. how long should the tube be?
