My explosives are too loud, I don't know where I cant set them off safe from cops.
Edit: Typo in title. "...can set them" off, not can't.
I've recently begun mass-production of black powder cobs, because I've decided they are my favorite explosive to play (safely) with. However, the police have already come to the scene once, and possibly more than that after I had left. Today, in an effort to make sure I was being safely out of reach from the long arm of the law, I walked to a mountain about a mile away from my house, then I climbed about halfway up the mountain, stuck a cob in a dead tree and lit it. When I got back, I was suprised to hear that a friend who had stayed at my house clearly heard the explosion. Sound carries best in cold, dry air, but today's weather was the complete opposite - hot, wet, muggy. This is unsettling, because that means the police (or certainly someone who may call them) heard it as well, and even though they were not called to the scene they are bound to come after me if I keep this up for a while.
Quitting is just... not an option. Explosives are one of the few things I enjoy in life (that sounds pathetic or over-dramatic, but it's true). I guess there isn't really any advice anyone can give me, but has anyone else been in a similar situation? What will happen if I am caught setting something like this off? (I'm a minor, not sure if that matters).

You want them to be real loud. Escaping from the cops is half the fun.

Yeah, well getting caught by them is a pain in the ass.
I've set them off underwater and in other places to muffle the sound, and of course that solves the problem, but it creates another: There's no entertaining "BOOM!", which is what I do this for.

Ever try a fuse delay? At least that way you could be far away doing something innocent by the time it goes off, less chance of getting caught.

Aye, I have this very same problem.
Not especially from cops who have a weak presence in my town, but the nosy soccer-mums.
Detonating them underwater or underground ruins half the fun.
Unless you want to drive really far out into the country when you do them, there is no escaping this. Just try to use common sense.

Re: My explosives are too loud, I don't know where I cant set them off safe from cops.
Useing a long time delay on shrpnel devices or larger devices i wont do because there is a possabilty that if someone walks past, you wont be around to warn them off. Setting them off in wooded areas are bettwe, in shrubs, will muffle the sound a little. Setting them off underwater is more entertaining then underground. However i think maybe you should try and find an middle ground explosive. Its obvious that the cobs are too loud so you might want something...weaker.

I use 3-in-1 oil. I'm not sure if that's gross or not.

Yes, but, more than that, it's a waste of 3-in-1 oil.

Re: My explosives are too loud, I don't know where I cant set them off safe from cops.
back on topic, use a ciggeret(SP? sue me) or insent with the fuse wrapped around it, the police are on my tail and i have to have multiple blasting sites and i have to switch from one to the other to keep them at bay. but go to a hippy shop and buy like a hundred insents and cut them in half then you got double. set the salute or cob up with the insent and then run the hell away.

Delays does sound nice, but say you left it on a sidewalk, and somebody walks within 3 feet of the device, then it goes off? thats why main concern.
I go for underwater charges I love to see the large splash of water.

exactly,
or you could try to construct a makeshift little shelter(similer to EP's)with cinder blocks etc, etc.
p.s. please make sure whatever you do, that there is always something between you and the cob, we do not want to lose another member, do to accidents.

Yeah but only an idiot just begging for jail time would set off any sort of explosive device on or near a public sidewalk anyway. My suggestion would be if you're going to use a delay and set something off on public land or woods where someone might come across your device, set it well off the beaten path, away from anywhere someone would normally go.
EDIT: typo

I'm very careful. I usually put them behind a boulder or a big tree for cover. If I can't find something like that, I find a small cliff, light the cob at the top, and jump off. I've been thinking about trying to find a remote area and setting up sandbags there for cover, but I don't know where I would go for that... hence the problem of this thread.

Well, if you put a bag full of water on top of the device it will lessen the noise, but not a lot like putting it under tons of water. Just my opinion.

A good idea.
