200g KNO3 smoke bomb-- with pics!
http://www.geocities.com/fire_pillar/smoke1.html
Sorry about pic #5-- I took it with the camera turned sideways, so I had to convert it from the camera to MS Paint to Animagic... from .jpg to .bmp to .gif. It lost something in the transfers. You can still make it out fine though.

Nice I think I will try the recrystallization method next time.

Nice. I wonder if there is a way to keep all the smoke on the ground.

Re: 200g KNO3 smoke bomb-- with pics!
It eventually settles back down to the ground with a ceiling of about 10 feet. That's how it filled up their back yards. And I mean "filled up" quite literally. Their wooden slat fence turned their yard into essentally a large tub where the smoke settled for about 5 minutes. Luckily he's the one cool neighbor I've got and didn't call the firemen and/or pigs on me.

Re: 200g KNO3 smoke bomb-- with pics!
how does the recrystalization method work? and is it better than just melting it in a saucepan and pouring it into a tube.

I would. Until I tried it, I thought KNO3/sucrose was an okay smoker..but with no other applications. Then..because I had a bunch of prills, and wanted to show a neighbor how to get rid of varmints, via smoke. I did the recrystallization method. Actually H2O, HNO3 and sucrose. Dissolving the KNO3 and sucrose in water is a simple matter, and then boiling off the water only took around ten minutes..from start to finish.
The resultant composition had(subjectively) much more energy than my previous comps. and I feel would serve as a good rocket fuel, and may even be useful for salutes..if contained enough.
I had three foot high, extremely hot(melted thick glass with ease) flames from a 3" cylinder. He was notably impressed. My neighbor now makes his own smoke(bombs), rather than buying it from the local feed/farm store.
I know that this is very basic information, but if someone finds it useful, than this post hasn't been for naught.

KNO3 + sugar is crap unless recrystallized.

Re: 200g KNO3 smoke bomb-- with pics!
This metyhod i find is very good but i think if we could use a alchol with a very low boiling point it would work better and dry faster but i don't know about how soluble the mix is in alchol
the closest i have done is casting and iusally just toss my mixin the pan and add alchol and use a low heat hot plate and mix well then i pour the very hot thick honey lick sludge into a cast
it works very well as a rocket propellent but you have to make it a core burning engine and you have to have a strong clay nozzle once it is done then i air zip it which pretty much sucks all out of the package and the seals it that way it is not exposed to water and such because water happens to destroy the engine just leaveing them out on a humid day will mess them up
also i prime the core with a slow burning black powder such as FFG and then i use an E-match such as first starts or wire wraps
either our recrystalization is a great process

Re: 200g KNO3 smoke bomb-- with pics!
I've made a KNO3 sucrose smoke bomb that was approx. 1-lb. The thing is, It burned so hot that the smoke pretty much just went straight up, rather than just fill the general area that it was in. The cloud of smoke traveled about 100ft to the west and then did descend to the ground, after it had dispersed a bit.

I don't think KNO3 dissolves in alcohol. I'm not sure about sugar.

I tired a 1kg NaNO3/sugar smokebomb before on a weekend on my schools football field. Too bad the wind was blowing or the effects would had been great.

Re: 200g KNO3 smoke bomb-- with pics!
The key to making the smoke stay on the ground is to form the kno3/sugar into a ball. The hot air compressed inside the tubing will make the smoke rise up.
I did some smokebomb testing a while ago with action pictures. I tried bp paste packed into a tube(end not sealed), bp powder packed into a tube(end not sealed), kno3/sugar rolled into a ball, 40/40/11/9 bp/detrin mix packed, 40/40/11/9 bp/ dextrin unpacked, and then a model rocket engine with a fuse.
It's alot of pics, so I will just show the kno3/sugar ones:

Almost forgot, the pics of the smoke bombs, to get an idea of their size.

Re: 200g KNO3 smoke bomb-- with pics!
I usually don't put smokebombs in containers. I usually dissolve them, boil all the water out of them, cool the mix in the refrigerator, ram it into a toilet paper tube, then slice the tube off. It leaves a hard, cylindrical, unconfined plug of KNO3-sugar mix.
