i have a heating pad that goes up in of 5degree what would be a safe temp to use without it over heating. i can go up to 250 but i think that be to high and it would cause smoke (altho ill be outside so it wont matter) any suggestions.

I dont see any problem with the heating, you just heat the sugar with a very small amount of water, when its melted but before it turns brown you just add the potassium nitrate ie, niter, kno3

Ok yes, you were told correctly. You should mix the sugar and the KNO3 before you heat it. Just put them in the can you are going to heat them in and put the lid on and shake them for awhile. Then just pop them on the hot plate. As for your temp. I am not sure, but just try a temperature. And if your mixture starts to get black or dark then turn it down quickly. Because it could then spontaneously combust and burn. But if you are doing it outside you should be ok.

[Heat it without the lid(I know you're not stupid just making sure)]
