Wow, I just made a 100gram batch, and this is fun stuff... the fire takes a while to spread, but when it does it flashes green/slight red/green/orange/green etc... It's a beautiful effect, and I suggest everyone who can try it does so.

80% Barium nitrate

10% PVC

10% red gum

Have you tried aluminum or magnesium powder instead of red gum? It might give it a darker green, but im not sure since I never tried with barium nitrate before.

Well, I've seen green bengal fire comps. that use Al or Mg, but they also involve a lot more ingredients then... so no, I haven't tried it... And ICP, how in the world do you make your powdered Mg??

Yeah, I ball mill it, but I never seen any magnesium foil, so if anyone sees any please tell me!

It just depends on what my magnesium source is. Sometimes I will cut short strips of magnesium ribbon up, and ball mill that for a few weeks.

If it is a firestarter bar, I either cut it with my knife, and ball mill the shavings, or I will hammer the bar down until it is about 1/8 inch thick, and use those really big metal cutters to cut it into small sections, and ball mill that. Remember when ball milling metals to open up the ball mill every 6-24 hours to prevent them from becoming pyrophoic and possible igniting when it is opened after a while.

Try barium sulfate instead. Ive only owned 1/8 pound of nitrate before, and I made a 5 gram batch of Al/nitrate, and sold the rest to my friend. It burned with a green tint, but when I got my barium sulfate I tried it and it was a much stronger green, and even darker with PVC.

Also, sulfate and Al is a powerful flash powder, and when you add about 10 percent PVC your salutes explode with a bright white/green flash.

Do a basic Google search for Mg foil. There are a shitload of places that sell it...
