M-80's or salutes
I know this is a real newbie like question, but I'll ask it any ways. I've obtained myself some black powder (from rocket engines) and a home made tube I made from thick paper and wood glue. I don't have any visco fuse and I don't think that I can get any. How could I make a fuse from basic house hold materials? (I'm only 14 and there aren't any chem shops near me just a hardware store) What else should I use besides BP inside the thing? Do I need an oxidiser(sp)? If so, what should I use? By the way, the BP I ground up isn't that fine but isn't that rough.
Peace Out,

Re: M-80's or salutes
you could cut off some match heads, get some of that paper tape, cut a length of the tape double the length that you want your fuse, then line up match heads so they are touching eachother in a line half way down the line of tape. then fold the tape over so it it covers all the match heads. then when you light one match it goes down the line lighting them all. crappy, but it works.

Re: M-80's or salutes
You could try blackmatch, it is just like a homemade Visco fuse. If you decide to make it, YOU MUST TEST THE BURNRATE BEFORE USING IT IN ANY DEVICE. Cut off a 1 inch peice, and light it. If it burns for 3 seconds, and you are using it in a M-80, use 3 inches of fuse, so 2 1/2 inches will stick out, giving you about 8 seconds to run away.
www.geocities.com/ng835/blackmatch.html (http://www.geocities.com/ng835/blackmatch.html)
Please be very careful with any device, and NEVER HOLD THE SALUTE IN YOUR HAND WHILE LIGHTING IT. ALWAYS LAY THE SALUTE ON THE GROUND, LIGHT THE FUSE AND RUN AWAY.

Re: M-80's or salutes
Like ICP said, make blackmatch. It's a fair substitute for visco. If you can get charcoal and KNO3 (stump remover, if you must), mix that up (2/1 or 3/1 nitrate/charcoal) and use it -- save your real BP for lifts and salutes.
But, as ICP said, you MUST test the burn rate! Different batches (or even different sections of one string of match) can have VERY different burn rates. As we all know, it's best to keep your hands and fingers attached to your arm, they do come in useful sometimes.

Re: M-80's or salutes
Hey about M-80's or any other salute that is made with flash powder, if you drop the salute or shake it up (hypothetically speaking of coarse), what would happen ?
Would it prematurely ignite and explode, or would nothing at all happen ?

Re: M-80's or salutes
Most likely nothing would happen. Unless you happen to drop it in a fire. Then you run like hell and duck and cover.

Re: M-80's or salutes
I know, thats what I have been doing for the past 2 weeks, just on flash powder and bp, and basic chem.
I think I should be all prepared to go, but I had to make sure on a few things, just incase.
