Default Car-mounted smoke screen.

I've got the piping, electronic ignition systems, insulation, and fire extinguishing systems all planned out. Now I'm asking you all for help.

What would be a good formula for use in a car-mounted smoke screen? It needs to be something quick-burning, that puts out a lot of thick smoke in a short amount of time. Cost is not a big object(since my uncle is paying for the chemicals ). Right now I'm leaning toward something naphthaline or hexachloroethane-based. Suggestions?

I can't think of anything except some kno3-based device, which would then pose problems with the flame, too-slow burning ect. Dry ice would be simple, but then you'd need a constantly powered cooling system... hmm.... mabye the kmno4/napthalene mix someone posted before should be looked into.

If im not mistaken, skywriters use ammonium chloride. use that.

I'm planning on using solid fuel, rammed into a galvanized steel pipe, surrounded by fiberglass insulation heavily dusted with monoammonium phosphate(the main indredient in ABC dry chem fire extinguishers). Ignition is electronic... NiChrome wire ignites BP, ignites smoke mix.. if I need to add another step, it's no problem. Color isn't a concern. Thanks for the idea with the skywriters. I'll check that out.

Okay, for NH4Cl smoke mixes:

Shidlovsky's:

KClO3: 20%

NH4Cl: 50%

Naphthalene: 20%

Charcoal: 10%

Becher's:

KClO3: 40%

NH4Cl: 45%

Montan wax(?): 12%

Kieselguhr: 3%

(From the PFP database)

Which sounds better to youse guys?

What the hell is kieselguhr? And this sounds like a cool idea.. maybe you could get a pic.

To answer David's question for the benefit of anyone else who might read it , kieselgurh is a diatomaceous earth-like substance. Think Cab-o-Sil.

If color isn't a concern, you could fill the pipe w/ the standard sugar/KNO3 smoke bomb. Works just fine.

Color isn't a concern, but KNO3/sugar doesn't put the smoke out fast enough, especially at speed.

i would think a kno3 sucrose mixture with a iron catalyst would fourm a fast burning smoke mix ...

While it does put out a lot of smoke, KNO3 + sugar doesn't put out smoke at a very high rate. Also, remember, if a car is moving, the smoke will be dispersed a lot faster than if it isn't moving.
