Chemicals that mix together to make fire/heat
ok, i usually reside in the BLTC forum, but i was sent to rehab and have decided to clean my act up for good.
Now, for my question.
I need to know what chemicals are needed to create heat/fire, just by mixing them together, or in other words, no outside source of heat and/or flame.

Re: Chemicals that mix together to make fire/heat
Potassium Permanganate and Glycerine
-Creates flame, needs at least 3g of KmNO4.
Potassium Permanganate and Hydrogen Peroxide
-Produces a lot of heat, no flame.

Re: Chemicals that mix together to make fire/heat
HTH pool chlorine and brake fluid (ethylene glycol I think). Mn2O7 and almost anything flammable. There are others, but I'm tired.

Hmm, never knew about the kmn04/h202 one.
I think I might try it tommorow. What sort of temps are we talking here?

Re: Chemicals that mix together to make fire/heat
Get a 12 ounce chunk of pure potasium and throw it in a lake.
Pure potassium or sodium and water equal instant fire.

Re: Chemicals that mix together to make fire/heat
mmh, i guess not only potassium and sodium. all alkali metals react violently with water, i guess.
but... they will be a little hard to get
mmh, yep, stick with the KMNO4/glycerine method (KMNO4 is potassium permanganate), it's the most popular one, and will also work in most cases.

Re: Chemicals that mix together to make fire/heat
Potassium explodes on contact with water, and sodium doesnt always ignite. They are expensive and hard to make, so just stick with the KMnO4/glycerine.

Re: Chemicals that mix together to make fire/heat
Potassium Chlorate + H2SO4
Catches fire allmost instantly (If you use too much H2SO4, it tends to spit hot acid everywhere though) So only 1 drop of H2SO4 is needed.
Powdered Aluminum or zinc + Iodine + water
After the water is added the reaction starts. Unfortunatley this one produces lots of TOXIC smoke. Sometimes this dosent catch fire.

Re: Chemicals that mix together to make fire/heat
Doesn't there need to be a fuel involved with that KClO3 + H2SO4 one?
Also NH4NO3, zinc powder, and a little bit of NH4Cl will spontaneously ignite from a drop of water. The ratios are at UN, it's known as negative X.

Not sure of the temp. exactly, adding a few drops, to a few crystals, will cause the lot to evaporate.
Another variant is to add the crystals to an already lit mixture of 50/50 meths/30%H2O2, causes small alcahol flame to flare up nicely.

nope.
I can assure you it works, I have done it many times.

Re: Chemicals that mix together to make fire/heat
You know those glowsticks, that you can buy- You snap/pull the middle and they glow in the dark? Well, if you get unused ones, and saw each end into a jar, do that with about 10-15 glowsticks, one of these is Hydrogen Peroxide, the other is a complex compound, the name is something like Solemonoid C. When the 2 jars are mixed, quite a lot of heat is made as well as light. Another is the chemical (I believe) White Phosphorous, and air, that ignites

Actually, the lightsticks contain luciferase and luciferin, one in the pressurized glass vial and one in the main body of the lightstick.

Hate too correct you, but you'r wrong :P Im talking about the ones that glow bright green- perhaps there are different recipes to it? (I've just done the chemical test for H202)

Re: Chemicals that mix together to make fire/heat
That is H2O2 in the glow sticks, along with at least to more compounds, one being a dye the other a chemical to react with the h2o2 to produce enegry to cuase the dye to emit light, i have forgotton the name of the 3rd chemical though.
Brake Fluid/Bleach
Brakefluid/Pool Chlorine
Anti-Frezze/Bleach
Anti-freeze/pool chlorine
Water/First coloum metals
Water/Acid
Water/ Negitive X
Water/X-OH
Water/ Iodine & Zinc
KMNO4/ H2O2
KMNO4/ Glycrine
H2SO4/ KMNO4
And on and on...

Re: Chemicals that mix together to make fire/heat
from unitednuclear.com:
the old Zinc Sulfide based material that's commonly found in the typical
glow in the dark items. As you know, that cheap stuff only glows for about an hour after being
exposed to light.

I wonder if i can make some zinc sulfide....
anyone know how you could go about doing that? Its not the same as making iron sulfide is it?

Re: Chemicals that mix together to make fire/heat
Zinc sulfide shouldn't be too hard to make. Stoichiometrical amounts of zinc powder and sulfur powder(like the rocket fuel), pressed into a wide but shallow cylinder. Have this suspended a foot or so over a bucket of water with the open end down. Use electric ignition and it should all burn very rapidly firing the resulting zinc sulfide into the water where it can tyhen be filtered out. It probably is tougher than it sounds. Maybe just throwing zinc powder into molten sulfur would work too.

Spose its different chemicals for different colours or something?
