Places to get Mercury?
I want to make mercury fulminate, but I think the only source of mercury I know it the metal end of a candy thermometer, and i'm not even sure if thats mercury or not. I thought mercury was a grey liquid like melted solder.

Re: Places to get Mercury?
you could probably get some mercury from any older thermometer. I know they don't use it in thermometers any more. Or maybe a store that sold science supplies.

Re: Places to get Mercury?
UN, Ebay, and various chem suppliers online. Search for "mercury metal""99.9%" on google.
EDIT: And here (http://www.dfgoldsmith.com/products.htm) of course. I sent them an e-mail and I'm waiting for pricing.

Re: Places to get Mercury?
Well they mentioned both easy ways, but, if you want alot, old lighthouses are filed with gallons of mercury for the light to spin on, however unless you live in the perfect area its no help to you, just an interesting fact i guess...

Re: Places to get Mercury?
United nuclear sells mercury, $30.00 for 1/4th of a pound. Of course I know a supplyer who sells mercury $15.50 for 1 pound no haz mat fee, my last order I ordered 2lbs. I decide to keep my supply a secret due to the fact that I don't want K3W1's abuseing them.

Re: Places to get Mercury?
Keep in mind that Mercury Fulminate is quite toxic, and the synth produces some rather nasty gasses such as:
ethylnitrate, ethylnitrite, acetaldehyde, NO, NO2 and CO2.
Make sure you do your research and be as safe as possible. Best info found at Megas page and at powerlabs.
Other than that, the end product is quite nice. For over 100 years it has been the single most common use in blasting caps, untill recently. The industry have been using more stable things to take it's place nowadays.

Re: Places to get Mercury?
I have been wanting to make this explosive for a very long time now, I've got everything I need but I've just been to busy with work and everything. I got a pet 4 foot Timber Rattlesnake I've been busy with, I'm in the process of building more cages for some other species of venomous snakes as well as some more Timbers which I'll be attempting to breed, as well as working with my neighbor on my new job installing security systems, fire alarms, audio, video, etc.

Re: Places to get Mercury?
WTF, do you have any idea as to how bad a rattle snake could fuck you up? I hope and think you do, but man the pics ive seen of limbs after bites scare the shit out of me. Id much rather have a pet cobra, there slower and there venome, althought more lethal, is just not as bad in my eyes as rattlers hemotoxin. I'd chose death over the deformation anyday...Plus survivor of nuertoxins have described the snake bites as a drug like experiance, Be careful buddy...

Trust me I intend to be very careful, it's not something I will be holding a lot, so far I've held him with hands twice, once to measure and check for ticks, the second time to milk it. Holding a hot is quite a rush IMHO, but the thought of getting bitten out weighs the pleasure of holding this creature, so mostly I only observe it threw it's cage. Speaking of cobras, a Black Forest Cobra is one on my list. This is getting way off topic, so I'll quit talking about my snake before I get this thred locked, but I had to talk about my little pet some. If you want to see the snake you may see it at this link... http://www.geocities.com/explosives_page/rattlesnake.html The picture is blurry and dark because my cam sucks, and the snake is also in "black phase" which makes it a little harder as well.

Re: Places to get Mercury?
Those kids' sneakers from the mid-90's that light up when moved have mercury switches in them. Don't know how much mercury is in them, though.
quote:From Readers' Digest, Aug. 2003:
Lodged in the earth's crust, some mercury is released naturally by volcanoes. It's also in thermometers, mining waste, fluorescent bulbs, flu vaccines, dental amalgam fillings, light switches, and children's light-up sneakers from the mid-'90s...
