Re: Lookin through the garage i found stump remover
before trying that purification method, you should read what the bottle / can / whatever it is in says. i guess the label on it will tell you if it's KNO3 alias potassium nitrate

Re: Lookin through the garage i found stump remover
I also just googled the name and found someone that says
"I do know that Lily Miller's Stump Remover is pure KN03, despite the
confusing label ("Stump Remover plus potassium nitrate"). I tested it
before using it and have used it for half a year with no troubles. It
dissolves pretty easily in water; if you have trouble try heating the
water. I've seen some other brands mentioned specifically on The Krib as
being pure KNO3."

Re: Lookin through the garage i found stump remover
Most of the time you don't need to purify it at all... this goes for any visibly pure looking KNO3.

Re: Lookin through the garage i found stump remover
Well for easy you could just make smokebombs, check out dtp's site or the whole of krimzon pyro, or you could make some bp among lots of other things....

Re: Lookin through the garage i found stump remover
try the goood ol' smoke-device
if you want to spend more time, and also get better smoke, try the smoke preparation procedures from www.krimzonpyro.com (http://www.krimzonpyro.com), by melting KNO3 and sugar, in a ratio 6:4, by weight. you can also use 6:4 by volume, because sugar and KNO3 have nearly the same density. that's how i did before i got my digital scale.
if you want to just test it fast, powder the KNO3 (if it comes in prill-form, if not, then skip this step), take 3 spoons of KNO3, put them into a disposable container, add 2 spoons of sugar, close the container, shake it well, so the chemicals mix, and then ignite it by fuse, or just ignite a match and put it there (but be careful with this!).
[edit]
now the link works

Re: Lookin through the garage i found stump remover
o_O
that mixture is not made for eating through plastic, it's made for producing lots of smoke
and, did it give off a lot of smoke?
well, you can make rockets out of sugar, KNO3 and sulfur, but for doing that you definitely need a scale.
by the way, try melting it, but be carfeul, do your first tries outside. melting it gives you thicker smoke, and also more

you don't need to cap the container, it doesn't even have to be a container! i usually put that stuff on a sheet of paper...

Re: Lookin through the garage i found stump remover
sulfur is an element that is usually a powder and a bright to mellow yellow color. yes if you simply mix together the ingrediants you will get green meal BP which is crappy BP then you need to ball mill it to get to good meal powder then you need to corn or granulate it to get up to lift powder or commercial powder which is the most powerful and fastest burning. And have fun with BP and dont try HE's yet because you lack much experience. however with great sources like these the pyrotechnic world is your oyster for learning

With a good casing, yes. You can sometimes find sulfur in garden stores and some pharmacies. Other sources would be chemical suppliers or ebay.

Re: Lookin through the garage i found stump remover
I've checked 4 pharmacies and two hardware stores with out any luck at finding sulfur. I ended up deciding to fuck the whole looking for it so I went to th one hardware store's website, it had dusting sulfur, I printed th page, went to the hardware store and just asked them if they could order it to the store for me(it wasn't an item that could be ordered direct from the site). Anyway, tomarrow I just have to down there and find out how much it costs, pay them, then they'll order it, and when it comes in I'll have 4lbs of 90% sulfur. Also I'm happy because I made 50+ grams of willow charcoal today.

Re: Lookin through the garage i found stump remover
I know somebody who actually did find sulfur in a pharmacy once, along with KNO3. You won't find it in most places, but it can be found there if you get lucky.

Re: Lookin through the garage i found stump remover
It was Value Home Center. Value is a chain of hardware stores but it is part of a larger chain: "Do it Best". So check http://www.doitbest.com to see if there is one around you then have them order you the sulfur.

Okay, so what about Willow wood? Where can you purchase willow wood from to make your own charcoal?

Re: Lookin through the garage i found stump remover
I remeber walking throug Wal-Mart and asking about charcol drawing pencils... They had 4 sticks of willow charcol for .89 cents each. Just chrush it up and mix the sulfur and KN03 and ball mill it.
I got the pencil Idea, cause Zero had it posted, or it was in the A-Files or something.

Charcoal works better than straight carbon. Don't ask me why.

On the Willow Charcoal...
My local Wal-Marts do not carry the willow charcoal. All they have is a pack of drawing charcoal for like $3, and it's a miniscule amount (4 tiny sticks). Is there a place where I could buy just the raw wood to convert to charcoal myself?

just go to home depot and buy some soft wood (such as willow if they have it), then burn it, and chrush it up.

Super...not to be stupid or rude, lol, but if you don't know what sulfur is I'd think you'd want to do a little more exploring and research before you start trying to blow things up so you don't end up blowing your hand off.

Re: Lookin through the garage i found stump remover
'Prolly can... What you want to do is make charcoal, though, not the ash bits. If you have a local ACE Hardware store, they do have bags of real wood charcoal, something canyon brand I think. I'm pretty sure it's going to be a medium to hard wood charcoal, but I think it might work in pyro, just not as good as Willow charcoal. It's like 5 bux for a 8# bag.
If you want to make your own charcoal, refer to some of the following links for more information.
http://www.velvitoil.com/Charmake.htm
http://www.dutch-net.com/~dennis/Charcoal.html
http://www.drawing.com.au/matirial_charcoal.php
You may do a search on Google or a similar search engine to find more how-tos with pictures and such. It is pretty simple to make once you have the right wood. I am told that using dried pine charcoal - like construction lumber - burns quick and hot, with minimum ash, so pine might be a good alternative if willow is not available.
Hope this helps you guys out!
