iodine crystals help! (me=noob)
quick questions: is condensation a factor for crystals to form on the lid with ice in it? my guess is yes, just double checking. and how far should the lid be from the boiling iodine?
thanks

Re: iodine crystals help! (me=noob)
I'm not too sure about that particular file, but as a general rule, avoid the Ka-Fucking-Boom entirely. Also, I know you're going to try to make NI3, and I know the file entitled "Ammonia Triiodide" in there is shit that you should avoid. I mean the even the name is wrong, it's nitrogen triiodide, not ammonia triiodide. As for making NI3, I don't suggest it, it's some sensitive stuff. If you have to make it, make less than a gram at a time, because if you try to make an ounce or something crazy, it will detonate under its own weight. Like I said, sensitive stuff..

Yes, this does require a new reply.
To all new people: We don't need to know that you're a newb, alright. We don't care. The thing that matters is whether or not you're an idiot. If you're new and you ask an intelligant question, you'll usually get good replies. If you're new or not, and you post shit, it's going to get lousy replies or if it's really bad, it'll get locked or deleted.

I think the lid above the iodine is supposed to have dry ice in it, not normal ice.

Re: iodine crystals help! (me=noob)
I have no clue why everyone wants to get crystals by boiling and condensing thats a stupid and hard way to go about it...Simply take some 3% h2o2 and add some h2so4 then dump in the tinture. The iodine will ppt. out of the solution.

Re: iodine crystals help! (me=noob)
I cannot stress how nasty pure iodine is.
For storage you MUST have a glass bottle (brown is best).
I made the mistake of storing it in a metal tin, and it corroded it, untill it was as fragile as an eggshell! Whatever iodine touches, it stains, and I MEAN IT STAINS!! the worst is on your skin, it tuns your skin yellow!
I have found that it can seep through certian things, I had some in a plastic film canister once. And it turned the plastic BROWN, and it stained the table it was sitting on yellow!

Re: iodine crystals help! (me=noob)
i actually went up to my chem teacher and asked how to separate iodine crystalls from the tincture of. she told me to put the tincture of iodine in a small dish inside a ice bath. i tried it and it works. however it took a week for all the crystals to evaporate.

Re: iodine crystals help! (me=noob)
Well the standard method to treat tinture in a acidic solution then precipitate it out with H2O2 works fine, then filter. It has to be done quick because it's volitile. If your planing to evaporate the alcohol with heat be very careful it will turn you lab yellow from the I2. Before you know it you will lose over half your yield. Id your iodine is impure yo can heat it it will sublimb( turning fron solid to gas) then recondensing it. Careful iodine is volitile and toxic.

I had the same iodine staining problem. In the film canister and it turned all the bags yellow/brown.

Do a little research, it pays.

Edit: The extraction from the Ka-fucking-boom link like most of the files in that section, is total bullshit.

Oh shit, I better get it out of that plastic container that I'm storing it in...
Before I had it stored in a plasitic container, I had it stored in a little glass jar with a metal lid, it sucked. I had a freaky looking, iodine-stained hand for a week!
Rat, what kind of glass container should I use to store iodine?

Re: iodine crystals help! (me=noob)
A glass container that the cap is not metal. Iodine is reactive and will react with the metal. Maybe a plastic or glass cap will do fine. Iodine is volitile so keeps the caps on tight. As you will notice over time you will lose some iodine.

Re: iodine crystals help! (me=noob)
ok, so maybe i won't try to make nitrogen triiodide.. yet.. but can anyone suggest some basic fun things to make? (keep in mind i'm living in india at the moment and i think my supplies are limited so basic chemicals please)
also if someone could give me a site that has equivelencies to things like h2o2 and h2so4, it would be appreciated since i don't know chemical composition other than h2o...
thanks

How old are you? Can you get your hands on a high school chemistry book, or maybe find an online chemistry course?

Re: iodine crystals help! (me=noob)
Buy some water purification solution, all it is is iodine and the crystals are in the bottom. Doesn't cost much either.
Also, its not toxic unless you drink a whole bottle of pure iodine with the crystals. However, the taste is very strong anyways. A capful of the stuff in a quart of water still adds a pretty distinct taste.

Re: iodine crystals help! (me=noob)
Correct me if im wrong but thats gonna be NaI or KI not I2, it might be a small part I2 which could balance out to NaI3 or KI3( not quit surre about this, smokey says its possible, triptamine says no)
I2 has an ld50 of 2ppm so its stupid to think a capful is drinkable in a quart of water...

Re: iodine crystals help! (me=noob)
Today I made a tiny amount of iodine from tinctures. The concentration wasn't stated, so I diluted some fuming HCl and put it in. That went ok, except that it filled my kitchen with fumes so i had to move it outside (humid as hell here!). I also got a slight sore throat, nose, and eyes from accidentally breathing them. Next, I added the store-bought 3% hydrogen peroxide in 1/4 cup increments and the putrid orangish-yellow gracefully shifted to a beautiful dark cherry red. I have yet to collect them after they clump together, but I know they're there because of the Tyndall effect. To make sure that there wasn't any iodine that wouldn't escape extraction, I added some more HCl. Not much of a change, so apparently I added enough. It was really that simple, except that I got iodine stains on my pants from initially forgetting to wear an apron. It was cool when lots of fumes were generated from rinsing out the glassware that had contacted the fuming HCl, as it fumed more than I expected it would. Btw, I used old drinking glasses, no special labware. Have fun!

Re: iodine crystals help! (me=noob)
Lol when i first made I2 that way i decanted off the solution and the iodine remained in the bottom of the flask, i just decanted off strait into my sink, well that was a bad idea, the h2so4 reacted and shot off some H2, then that reacted with the remaining I2 to give me a couple nasty gulps of air containing HI, bad shit ill tell yeah...

Re: iodine crystals help! (me=noob)
Hmm, it didn't seem to work very well but the color changes were cool. Nasty yellow/orange -> crimson in a few seconds after H2O2 addition -> transparent overnight. My mom's a home health nurse, so I should be able to get tons of free iodine. My bro wants to make NI3, but I want to do the reaction of aluminum powder, iodine, and a drop of water to get it started.
I read about a dude that did a reaction with iodine crystals that produced more heat that he expected and he got a huge whiff of the gas. He had serious flu-like symptoms for days and learned that it sensitizes you to it. I also read about many chlorine gas mishaps, most notably one where someone created much more than he expected and had his face in the "fountain". He ran away and could smell it from many blocks away with dogs barking everywhere. Another halogen inhalation story was where yet another person was isolating bromine and the reaction got hot enough to vaporize it and his head was in it and his eyes got exposed. He also got the liquid on his skin and it burned really bad and the patch was red for weeks.
