Default So close...So far....

Well, i went to OSH today. I was going to get some Acetone and some HCL (plus a few other things so i wouldnt look suspicious, such as some model paint to go with the acetone and a couple other things i need) Well, i found the acetone easily enough (Its nice how they label it "Acetone" in nice large bold letters ). I looked around, but i diddnt see HCL. I would have asked someone who worked there, but it would have been a bad idea to ask someone for hydrochloric acid while holding a container of acetone . Man, i rode my bike for 45 minutes to get there, and no HCL. Well, maybe they had it and i just diddnt look hard enough. I did look pretty hard though...

Anyway, does anyone know if they might carry HCL at walgreen's or a supermarket? Anybody know what it might be called if they have it there?

And of course you people probably already know what im making . Wish me luck ^_^

No,your most likely not gonna find it a super market or pharmacy.

I know that H2OS4 cost a bit more, but have you considered substituting it for HCL?

You find sulfuric acid under the toilet cleaner label "Liquid Fire." Its nicely concentrated for a commercial product, I believe somewhere between 95-98% ?

HCl is better, because it's usually cheaper, and if you miss some while neutralizing the product, the HCl will evaporate. Liquid Fire is a good brand of H2SO4, as Kanibus said. I'd say that an ACE / TrueValue hardware store is the best for getting chemicals based on what I've seen, look there. They had John Madden on thier ad, so I guess it's a nationwide chain.

You could also try Lowe's Hardware, that is where I get most of my supplies from, even though Ace is a better supplier Lowe's is way closer to my area.

The Lowes here seems to suck, I couldn't find HCl or H2SO4 in there the day I went in.

In my hardware store they sell it its something that begins with a M but you have to read the contents. It is only about ~25% pure but would it still work in a MEKP or AP synth? here it is Muriatic Acid thank you google =)

25% muratic acid (assuming it's free of impurities, look for a MSDS online) will be fine. You might want to add a few extra mL to be safe, since most synths ask for 30%.

Down here in Memphis, we've got Dan Marino for a family-owned used car dealership. Unless, that is, Dobbs is a nationwide chain?

Actually, we've got Ace and TrueValue, too, so they're probably nationwide. I know you can get H2SO4 there, but not under the name Liquid Fire. Just some generic non-dyed 97% stuff in a white bottle labeled

INDUSTRIAL STRENGTH DRAIN OPENER

WARNING! FATAL IF SWALLOWED, TOUCHED, SMELLED, OR EVEN LOOKED AT. STAY 100 YARDS AWAY. EVACUATE THE STORE, YOU'RE TOO CLOSE! WOMEN AND CHILDREN FIRST! GET TO HIGH GROUND! CALL HAZMAT! CALL FEMA! YOU'RE ALL GOING TO DIE!

Well, i decided to bring this thread back from the dead instead of starting a new one. As some of you may have read, i now have all the chems i need.

I got them all measured out and chilled. i was just about to mix the acetone and h202, and it starts raining. It just started raining, out of nowhere. Now, i probably could have mixed it in my garage, but even though it is well ventilated, i diddnt want to take a chance. now i have to wait for the rain to stop (probably pretty soon). I will check in to tell you all i am still alive after i mix the chems together. Wish me luck .

Well, i just finished mixing everything. Now it on my patio crystalizing .

Oh, i am still in one piece by the way.

By the way, how long does it usually take you guys to add all the acid?i think i went really slow, it took me about half an hour to add it all. Perhaps im a bit cautious .

I just bought a gallon of HCl, and I forgot how harsh the stuff is... I spilled ONE DROP and there is now a hole in my driveway, along with eerie white mist that is probably caustic....

Ok, i just checked on my ap and i made a strange observation. I looked at it, and there is a coat of some kind of foam like substance (most likely foam ) on the top. Is this normal? Did i do something wrong? Im pretty sure i followed the directions exactly.

Oh well, i hope this wont effect it any. i will be filtering it tomorrow.

Your driveway is concrete, is it not?

HCl dissolves the lime in concrete, that's what it's used for(dissolving the mortar used in brickwork). It's probably the weakest acid that will still work well at all for AP. It does have the nasty habit of giving off toxic fumes, though. Wear a gas mask whenever you work with it.

Well, i just filtered the AP. I dont know what that foam stuff was, but it survived through the initial rinse, but as soon as the alcahol hit it, it got filtered through too.

It is drying right now. i set a small amount to the side so that bit would dry faster. it looks like it will be dry in 10-20 minutes.

err... why should someone wear a gas mask while handling 30-35% HCl? it doesn't give off NOx, so...

i mean, better safe than sorry, but use a gas mask for HCl...

congratulations, obake, well done

Just a note after the fact, HCl can be bought as concrete cleaner.
