Pyro related random thread (PRRT)
I figured we needed a thread here sort of like a Hive Temporary Couch(tm). Where we can post stuff that is pyro related, yet does not warrant the opening of a new thread. Sort of an everyday happenings/progress report type deal.
So after I wrote my Inorganic midterm today I showed my professor some videos of my 20-30g AP fireballs. He looked at me kind of shocked and said "you shouldn't be messing with that stuff" Aw fuck it. Maybe I shouldn't have showed him.
Anyways we are having a demonstration/free pizza night on friday where the same prof is going to blow up a few hydrogen balloons and freeze more crap with LN. Same shit at least a few times a year(same lame jokes to), I'd hoped to enlarge his repertoire a little, but as usual paranoid liability rears it's ugly head. I wish there was a chem prof around here that was a little more enthusiastic.
Really I think he frowns on it because he likes to be the center of attention.

Re: Pyro related random thread (PRRT)
well, me and my friends diddnt have any explosives on us, but we had plenty of butane, balloons and some really flammable liquid which i diddnt take the time to identify. well, we started the day off small. we filled some water ballons(the small ones) with butane and lit them. it was kinda cool, in a mild kind of way. well, long story short, one of my friends messed up bad. we had filled a LARGE water bottle with the really flammable stuff i mentioned before and he was squirting it into a fire. the fire traveled up the steam of liquid and cought the bottle on fire he dropped the bottle and ran. lets just say, it was bbetter than any molotov coctail when it hit the ground. i dont know what the liquid my friend had was, but i really wish i had more of it.

Re: Pyro related random thread (PRRT)
Im currently developing some larger kn sugar rockets. My last 2 were 1foot long with approx 150grams of rocket fuel. Both shot up 30feet with the end plugs shooting out then plummeting into the lake. the next ones im going to screw in with some small screws.

Re: Pyro related random thread (PRRT)
Nothing too exciting, but I made AP with H2SO4 for the fist time (I have previously used only HCl). I expected it to be faster and all but I was still surprised when the first drop hissed and made steam! When I tried adding slower and faster, fast additions sometimes made a little splash of light brown liquid, no idea what it might be...

Re: Pyro related random thread (PRRT)
Funny you should say that, i have just started my new way of adding the H2SO4 to H2O2/Acetone mix, pour it down a string, like the ninja does with poison in some bond film (i think), also be stirring it at the same time and cool it down a lot more than you need (my chemiclas go overnight in the freezer before the synth). You should never have hissing/ fizzing again. Oh by the way take it from someone that knows, dont screw up and tip a whole load in, unless you enjoy being coated nasty chemicals!

Re: Pyro related random thread (PRRT)
Set off first polumna. It was weired in that when it exploded with a low pop, the snow around it formed a tamp that shot the paper casing up 12 feet or so (4m). The whole time it was on fire too, that was the weired part.
When you guys make AP, you don't use dropper bottles and cool the liquids before hand?

The chems were chilled from being outside, but I don't put things in the freezer or anything a day before because a) it's full and b) people might mess it up.
What do you mean by dropper bottle? Do you mean an eye dropper or what? I'm going to stick with HCl for making AP because it's cheaper and I have tons of it, I just wanted to see how H2SO4 compared.

Re: Pyro related random thread (PRRT)
Ok, heres some news:I made many propane ballons(shitloads of fun ) and project hellfire has changed again. Now it is the "modified" propane valve(drilled it from its "smaller than needle" size to 1/4")and attached a 330psi 3'long air hose from that to the fire extinguisher head(detached). If you hold it in front of most flames, it just makes a surprisingly loud thump and some fire and the flame usually blows out. Anyway I was using the Boric acid/alchol(sp?) mix and let the hellfire do its thing over it and there was a 3' by 3' GREEN fireball!

Re: Pyro related random thread (PRRT)
Heres a little story for you people.
Ive got this acquaintance. I just found out on saturday that he used to be into pyrotechnics too. He had a freind who was a blaster and that friend got him pure nitrogen which he used to make 14 pounds of C4 ( I didnt believe him at first but I know him and hes not the exagerating type)
Anyways he brought it to a friends house to keep it, but that friends parents dumped it into the hallway of their apartment building, and a neighbor saw it. Pretty soon the cops, and a bomb squad were evacuating the building because of a bomb threat and my acquaintance got called up at 3 in the morning.
Anyways he convinced the cops he was just a hobbyist and didnt want to hurt anyone (the chemicals were not set up in a bomb so they couldnt say he left a live bomb in the building just the stuff to make a bomb) so he got 2 years of probation and all his glassware, chems and blasting caps were all conviscated. Shitty deal eh?

Re: Pyro related random thread (PRRT)
Ive actually heard of a few cases where people got caught with explosives and got in some deep shit. What precautions do you guys take to not get into trouble? Basicly I have some illegal firecrackers stashed in my drawer, a few M-80s in the closet with my glassware and bunsen burners, and a jug of acid in the basement. I would like to have a safer place to put my stuff but right now im not too worried about getting caught because I dont draw any attention to myself. I light off M-80s while 4X4ing, thats about it.

Today I was lighting off a super ping-pong ball smoke (4 ping-pong balls chopped up) and I was having trouble lighting it because it was windy so I went in a corner and got it to light but it shot some of the smoke in my eye and it burned like hell! I couldn't open my eye for like 5 minutes im okay now though. I am getting good progress on my website It should be finished by friday of next week. www.geocities.com/warren1pyrokid/ (http://www.geocities.com/warren1pyrokid/)

Right... The explosive in C4 is RDX, and pure nitrogen is NOT used to make it. http://roguesci.org/megalomania/explo/RDX.html
I doubt he made any, much less 14lbs. Unless you can give some actual details and evidence I say this person is full of shit.

Re: Pyro related random thread (PRRT)
Aechean this is my method for making AP:
pour 50mL of acetone into a pickle jar
pour in 65mL of 35% peroxide
swirl a few times put on lid loosely and put outside
an hour later take it inside pour in a splash of 30% HCl
put it back outside for a few hours
When I get back to it it is a solid mass of sludge which gets washed filtered and then washed with bicarbonate and then filtered again and rinsed.
Then dried and used, no droppers no special lab ware, the precautions observed are the ones that count like the base wash and thorough rinsing, and the cold reaction temperature. You don't need to be anal about measurements, an acid catalyst is just an acid catalyst a splash is fine. Sulphuric has an appetite for water so it gets really hot when added to water.
I just made another batch of 75mL acetone and 100mL peroxide. Should yield nearly 80 grams.
I'm also evaping the isopropanol off the 80 grams of aspirin tommorow morning.

Why are you using isopropanol for your purification? When i did i ended up with acetic(sp) acid, i think there are better things to use. If your making PA just adding the unpurified asprin should be fine. See the thread on www.sciencemadness.org/talk (http://www.sciencemadness.org/talk)

http://www.geocities.com/pyromasterman2003/sodiumchlorateBP.html that is the "super black powder" it is sometime knowin as a flash powder but i dont think it is as powerful as flash but it is more powerful bp so i call it super bp. I made some fuse today using just BP water and cotton stirng it is drying I will tell you what happened with it tommorow.

Re: Pyro related random thread (PRRT)
I only use AP in my polumnas I've never made my own bp or fuel/oxidizer.
I extracted the aspirin because I strive for purity, GIGO and all that. Half of each pill is crap why waste acid on crap?
I made a monster batch of AP today (dry mass should be 80-90g) but it isn't dry yet so I'll get back when it is.
I did some experimenting. a small amount of AP was placed on the element of the stove and it was turned on high. After a few seconds it melted, bubbled and boiled off. ???? this was done several times with old powder (5 days old) and new stuff.
I'm going to do some full bore stabillity tests of this stuff in the near future. I'll need to build some special hammers and testing devices.

Nope he said pure nitrogen. Ive done some reading on nitric and its not all that hard to make so he wouldnt need to get in touch with a blaster. Ive got about half the stuff to make nitric without even trying to get it. And hes not a freind. I dont really like the guy I just thought I could learn a bit from him but if hes just a liar then fuck it.
edit: he told me he would give me a disk with his plans to make the C4 so I will post them so you can all read how he did it. And if he doesnt give me the disk then theres another reason to believe he was just lying.

Re: Pyro related random thread (PRRT)
Dropper bottles for medicines arn't too hard to find, at least for me. They allow you to add the acid slower (so you can keep the temp. lower), but if you don't have one, no problem like tryp said. A syringe would also work.
The polumna was filled with homeade BP (yay, I got my BP to work!
When you treat aspirin (sp?) with isopropanol it removes the binders I think and leaves acetasalicylic acid (sp.?) or ASA. I'm not sure how much binder is in aspirin. If you have masses of before and after purification, please tell tryp or anyone, just so we know if purification is really necesarry. I heared from Smokey that when making the TNP, treat the ASA with H2SO4 until the "vinegar" smell is gone and then add nitrate.
Wow, it just melted and vaporized? See if you can get the AP to go off from open flame. I know thats not the point, I'm just wondering if maybe the lower heat of the electric stove made the AP melt and maybe liquid AP is less sensitive than solid, that is why it vaporized? Doubtful I must say so myself.
Many would be interested in hearing hammer drop test results of many batches of AP, escpecially made at different temp.s and different amounts of catalyst (more catalyst=faster reaction=smaller crystal size=less strain on crystal structure and hopefully less sensitivity.

Here's some stuff about my try at TNP without purifying the aspirin: http://www.roguesci.org/cgi-bin/ewforum/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=000530;p=2#0000 80
Soon (maybe this weekend) I'll purify the aspirin and try it again. Also, if all goes as expected, I'll have my update sent to Rat. There are a few more things I'd like to do first, but I decided I should just get what I have up.

Re: Pyro related random thread (PRRT)
Hmm I'll find out exactly how much binder and what my extraction yields were this weekend when I continue with that project, right now the binder is drying and the IPA/aspirin is just sitting in a flask. I'd bet that the purification makes a huge difference as the binders contain cellulose derivatives and lactose both of which can be nitrated and reacted with sulphuric acid.
I think that the AP on the element behaved like that because it was heated gradually. The same stuff that fell under the burner was touched off with a butane lighter with the usual micro fireball. I'm very interested in doing some gradual melting point determinations, and recrystallization to form larger crystals to test. Also on the books are some impact tests and static pressure tests but they will take some time as I have to weld up the apparatus, I'm going ot go buy a six tonne jack and make a small anvil press. For impact I'll use a anvil on a pendulum. I also want to see what the effect of sublimination onto a coldfinger will bring? Perhaps very sensitive crystals? Also in the interest of the community I'm going to test some batches that are un-neutralized and some more variables that could lower stabillity.
I want to know as much about this compound as possible. We can all benefit when we know it's limits.

Re: Pyro related random thread (PRRT)
I've been trying for the past three days to make NI3 but every time I try to set it outside to dry it rains that night. I've wasted over half my iodine crystals that way. Anyways, I'm going to my parents' house this weekend; they live in the middle of nowhere so I'll make a couple grams and dry it off in their shop. I've also got an arsenal of fireworks that I made--M80's, whistle rockets, helicopters, and ground rockets--that I'll finally be able to set off. I'll also be setting off my first aerial shells, all 3" diameter. I'll let you know how it works out.

Iodine is an element, so it can't decompose. If it gets to a point, it will sublime from its solid state to a vapor.

Re: Pyro related random thread (PRRT)
When people say they've made c4 dont belive them, its one of those explosive that common people here of. Then they try and look cool. Pure nitrogen is VERY hard to react with anything its a triple bond that make it so unreactive, if fact only certain plants or extreme heat and pressure have ever turned n2 into anything usful. Titainium is the only thing that can so much as burn in pure nitrogen, yes thats true not a typo.

Re: Pyro related random thread (PRRT)
Thanks tryptamine, I'm still kind of iffy on what the limits of AP are.
Like what exactly do you not do with it once it has formed? If you kept it at below 10 celcius you shouldnt have had the more volatile dimerric form. But if the crystals are stored under 10 degress C, youre safe to unscrew the cap/have a little bit of shaking and stuff? Like if I put the AP in a bag and put the bag in my pocket, it wouldnt explode would it? Just need some limitations here, if someone could explain a little bit more in depth that would be great!

Dry AP should be stored in an open container, not a bag, and definately not in your pants (or in your shirt if thats where your pockets are)! And don't store it for more than 2 weeks, less than a few days if possible.

They mean Acetone Peroxide , a primary explosive.
Just made some Mn207 about ten minutes ago. Two batches. The first one, I just sprinkled some Potassium Permagnate on a small shread of a cotton ball, and dripped my crappy 93% H2S04 on it. First there was a pretty big spark, then another, then another and the shread burst into flames. Cool stuff. The second betch was 10g PP and 10ml. This time I mixed them together in a 100mm beaker and stirred afor a bit. Some PP clumped up, but most didn't. Anyway, the same as above happened except woth much faster and somewhat bigger results/ This time I dropped in a whole cotton ball. Also the second batch let off purple smoke before the ball burned(probably some Mg compound, don't breath it) Anyway, just thought you should know.

The AP we are talking about is acetone peroxide.
The reason limits are hard to decide are because AP is so unpredictable.

I was using Zero's method of making tubes for salutes (in articles) and I made about 25 tubes then I ran out of glue. Could I use a gluestick instead? It would save a big mess and be cheaper (my school gives them out as school supplies for free).
Edit - I made black match fuse using sugar instead of dextern. What should I coat it with to make it burn through glue? Because when it gets to the glue it just goes out.

Where do you people find your boric acid (other then roach killer, they dont sell that here ). You see i made one of Zeros hell lighter then i put some petrol in there and filled the rest up with gas, Which makes it a lot stronger and hotter. However id like to use alchol and boric acid and give the flame a nice green tinge.

My local RiteAid sells it, kinda expensive though. But mine is not sold as roack killer...sold as "Boric Acid". If your desprate try pyrotek. Thay should have it.

Re: Pyro related random thread (PRRT)
I was looking for an engine for making a ball mill and I needed something that wouldnt over heat too easily. So I ripped apart a pump but after braking through layers of plastic and clay all I found was some sort of solenoid or armature thing. Anyway I wouldnt recommend using a pump its pretty useless, maybe I'll find a fan or something.

Re: Pyro related random thread (PRRT)
Ok i tested a few new rockets today. About 120grams of rocket fuel, then end plugs screwd in this time. The first one still had the end plug tear out with a loud bang, the carcess thrown around 50m into the air, the second exploded (CATO with style) into several pieces, huge bang, like a cob. After that i went back to the track where some track bandents made a few jumps. Its soggy ground after the rain so i shoved in a cob (matchpowder, kno3, sugar and fe203). Boom i went back and noticed only a small hole about the soze of my hand. On closer inspection i noticed a big hole inside the clay jump about that could fit about 6 tennis balls inside. So now the lip of the jump is hollow...Hee hee hee.
Il do some more tests soon

Re: Pyro related random thread (PRRT)
If you are making rockets you have to make the fuel into one solid continuos grain. Sounds like you are just packing powder into the tube. In essence you are making big firecrackers. It is burning too fast.
A fircracker usingf powder has such a great surface area it burns instantaneously. A rocket motor has comparativly little surface area and burns in a few hundredths/tenths of a second, this slow burn is why they don't explode. You need to find some way of compressing or fusing your fuel into a grain.

So I am still in search of quart sized canning jars. Using the chronic tek I can make automated fruiting chambers each holding a 1/2 pint cake.
I will have about 5 spore prints with in a few days so experimentation can begin! My Isopropyl tek will be put to the test and some otehr shit will happen.
Yeah this isn't about pyrotechnics I know....

Re: Pyro related random thread (PRRT)
Attempted my first secondary yesterday. Twas a charge of 150grams AN with 44ml 40% MEKP (Bondo brand) I used one of the 10 proffesional blasting caps with fuse my friend obtained for me, unfortunately it was at most partial detonation of the AN/MEKP mix nearby the cap based on two things. 1) a cap alone sounds like a rifle shot and the charge was just a tad louder & 2) there was a glob of AN/MEKP sitting on the log where the charge was placed.
Interesting facts, blasting fuse burns at a rate of 25 seconds in a 6" length and the fuse burns within itself. It was ignited using the method described in "The Blasting Manual", slice fuse down the middle for 3/4"-1" with sharp knife, insert match with stick upwards, to ignite light second match and hold under match within fuse.
I'll have pictures of the fuse and caps up later on. They are about 3" long 1/4" wide with powder filling half cap length, visible powder is yellow (Lead Azide?)the fuse fits neatly inside.
Right click save target as.
http://aaronewf.tripod.com/images/ANMEKP_armed.jpg
http://aaronewf.tripod.com/images/ANMEKP_results.jpg
Reasons the charge didnt go all the way was 1) AN wasnt dried previous to mixing and 2) too much sensitizer, to wet a mix.
But hey, I still have about 8 feet of fuse and 8 caps left!

No i made the rockets fine. Iv made them up to 6inch with impressive results. I ram the powder in and pull out a rod to leave a core. I have a video of one of them things going off. But these bigger ones have an incredable amount of psi. The next ones im going to make a larger nossle hole (the last one was about as thick as ur finger., with stronger caseing. If i cant get them too work soon, il use PVC, or allumnium caseings

I don't see what you have against ordering fuse...I got my order from cannonfuse in less than a week, for $0.225 a foot. Shipping is included in the price. I didn't even know hobby stores still sold fuse, what do they say its for and much much does it cost?

One of the gun stores in my town sells it for those toy cannons, but that's the only place I've been able to find it other than the internet.
In other breaking news, one of the fertilizer companies that supplies my store just went out of business and had a huge sale. I got 100lbs of KNO3 and 50lbs of NH4NO3 for $15!!! Should be a lifetime supply.

Re: Pyro related random thread (PRRT)
DAMN DAMN DAMN DAMN DAMN. I finally did the propane project. And I had the video camera with me. And I hit record and ignited a sparkler above the propane. And I ran 200' away. And I hit the ignition button. And all 4 of my linear shaped charges went off (near as I can tell). And the propane was released and ignited in a hell of a fireball. And I was excited. And I went to the camera to watch the tape again, and that's when I realised I had the lens cover on. And now I'm kinda sad that I don't get to show off the video, but I'm also kinda happy because almost everything went as I had hoped. So there you have it, folks...

Re: Pyro related random thread (PRRT)
Thats rad dave. I cut some bolts off a bumper at work and collected the powder. From my (very) limited understanding of flash powders all you need is a fuel and oxidizer. So I have the metal powder(fuel) and the oxidizer(magnesium sulfate) so maybe I will make a flash powder.

I don't think that magnesium sulfate will work as a good oxidizer.I think you should get potassium nitrate or get potassium perchlorate. The metal you should use should be aluminum or magnesium.

Where'd the powder come from? was it rust? If so, rust is an oxide, so it won't burn any more, so is is useless.

I think he meant the powder from the cutting, which would be the same material as the bolt. Anyway, magnesium sulfate is an oxidiser, but it's not much good for flash. If you wanna use magnesium sulfate, look at the following: http://www.roguesci.org/cgi-bin/ewforum/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=3;t=000387#000000

hey guys, I am just moving up from powdered things like flash powder and I am goin to make some AP. It appears that getting concentrated H2O2 from the 3% drug store stuff is pretty hard. What concentrations do you suggest? I know where to buy some 'food grade' 35% is that good enough?

Re: Pyro related random thread (PRRT)
Get the 35% if you can. It should work fine. If you can't get anything but 3%, take the 3% and boil it to 1/10th its starting volume. Follow either of the instructions:
This one from my site (http://206.206.179.159/Projects/AP.html) or
this one from Mega's site (http://www.roguesci.org/megalomania/explo/acetoneperoxide.html).
And be careful.

Re: Pyro related random thread (PRRT)
Whoa that was a long read dave. And yeah the filings are from the bolt, not rust.
A table of comparison (not mine) found here http://www.roguesci.org/cgi-bin/ewforum/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=3;t=000387#000000
Nitrate Chlorate Perchlorate Sulfate
Ammonium 0.60 0.47 0.54 0.48
Barium 0.37 0.32 0.38 0.27
Calcium 0.58 0.46 0.41 0.47
Copper 0.51 0.42 0.49 0.40
Gadolinium 0.42 0.35 0.42 0.32
Lithium 0.69 0.53 0.60 0.58
Magnesium 0.65 0.50 0.57 0.53
Potassium 0.47 0.39 0.46 0.37
Sodium 0.56 0.45 0.52 0.45
Strontium 0.45 0.38 0.45 0.47
Magnesium sulfate isnt too bad an oxidizer but I may need stronger because I think the metal filings are steel. Of course I dont really know the propertys of steel or if it will work as a fuel but I will give it a try. The reason I dont use aluminum/perchlorate or KNO3/magnesium is because I dont have any at the moment.

Today I set off two "pen grenades" with BP and they were pretty damn loud!louder than I expected anyway.Because I live in the city and my blast site is far away(three hours away)and these were small and I thought pretty quiet.Because I live in a city townhouse, I my "backyard" if you can call it that is just a lot of bricks layed on dirt so noise is a real problem for me. But I have cool neighbors, so they didn't callt he cops

i dont like admitting these ever, and will not do it agian, but a bp filled pen is damn powerful. Back when i was young, about 14, i filled a pen up about 3/4 with BP, and stuck in a fuse in the tip. I had a popcorn bucket that i always set stuff off in, and held the top on (most of my devices were very weak, so i didnt have much to risk). I lit the fuse, tossed it in the bucket, and held the lid on with my hands. It went off with a loud boom, just about broke both of my arms in half, and the tip where the ink comes out, which was metal, shot straight through the side of the metal popcorn bucket. I was very lucky, and from then on, i ran my ass off before the salute exploded.

Yea I am always kinda paranoid about shrapnel(not a bad thing to be scared or)so I put it in a 2" deep crater in the ground(dug up brick)and put a burning paper towel delay on the fuse(the hi-tech method of coures ). But I filled up all the way with bp because I was running low on fuse. All I could find i the crater were two very small plastic fragments of plastic, and the metal tip which and shot out and bounced off the brick wall back towards my cozy little bunker(about 20 feet)! Don't under estimate these little guys!

Re: Pyro related random thread (PRRT)
A few days ago, i took the top off of a 16 oz(i think it was) water bottle. The cap had a larger diameter than a soda cap and its had a smaller height than a soda cap. Anywayz, i melted the center a little bit, made a hole, and shoved like 4 inches or so of a straw. I took about an inch or so and left it on the top of the bottle, meled it down so it made a lip on the bottle cap. I took a can of butane, pushed it on an angle into the ball, and filled it with a shit load of butane. I still had liquid butane in there which kicked ass. I made a little flame and squeezed the bottle which makes a huge flame. Then i redid this, put it on the ground, and step on it into a flame which made like a 4 ft flame from the bottle. It was fun

Sounds nice, I love fire! probably just as much as an explosion. Stepping on it would have been to nerve racking for me, I prefer to be away from whatever it is I'm setting off, 3rd degree burns don't sound good to me.

Just throw on a pair of jeans and do it. The flame goes out really quick as soon at the butane coming out is depleted. Also, if you burn your leg or genitals, im not responsible.

Re: Pyro related random thread (PRRT)
Aaron, the reason I think your MEKP/AN didn't work was because your MEKP was really impure. I think you said you started with 40% MEK, and that gets diluted by the H2O2 in the reaction. The excess water then from the MEKP would be absorbed by the AN making it very insensitive. Let your MEKP sit a day and then decant everything else off. Also, oven bake and then seal until time of use your AN. Your using crystal or powder AN, right?

I didnt synth my MEKP, I purchased some Bondo brand MEKP liquid Resin catalyst. The AN was mortar & pestled from prills to powder, not baked because of the situation. I now understand many factors were against me but hey, at least it's experience.

Well yeah, MEKP resin stuff isn't going to explode. Oh well experiance is usually a good thing.
What the hell is a popper, static? One of those fake champagne bottle things with a string?
As for my fireball, I couldn't judge it very well. It was dark, so there wasn't anything I could see to judge it by - then all of a sudden it was too bright to see anything. Sure was hot though. Next time, I'll try one of these:

Re: Pyro related random thread (PRRT)
A popper is one of them things that are full of juice and you stick a straw in the top and drink out off, then when your done blow them up with air and stomp on them.
Anyway a few minutes ago i tested another rocket. It was around 35mm wide and 6inch long. It was looking good as i went out to the creek and proped it up. I lit the fuse (sparkler) and ran about 10m back...waiting waiting. Then the tissue paper i use to hole the fuse in caught fire, which didnt bother me too much because from experence it wont destory the motor or ignight it, which wouldnt matter anyway since thats what i wanted. A few seconds later however the duck tape holding the guide stick melted of and the motor just fell on the ground. Here i am with possiable the strongest working motor (iv made ones with 150grams of fuel but they all exploded like pipe bombs) iv ever made and it has no guidence, its just lieing on the ground...pointing at me. I ran deeper into the bush and hide in a trench. FAWOOOOOOOSSSHHHHH withing 2 seconds the motor was empty and a ball of smoke was billiowing fromt he creek. I recovered the moter and foudn it buryed in a bush, still smoking and hot but it had survived..Had i put that fire out on the tissue it might have flown higher then any rocket iv made (i predict it would fly about half a km from observing my smaller rockets which have a range of about 200-300m)....DAMN
il try again soon.

Re: Pyro related random thread (PRRT)
ok so its a random thread....
this isnt an explosive, but its quite amusing.
get some of them party poppers/champange popers things remove the string charge (if you canc all it a charge), get about 6 of these
get a tube (badminton shuttlecock tube excelent) go to a badminton place and get a tube from the rubbish - ther are heaps there.
put a small hole in one of the end caps, remove the other. stick the strings of the string charges through the hole and put the cap on the tube so the charges are inside.
find sleeping victim. hold end cap, pull string hard NOT CLOSE TO THEM bout 5 m away...its fucking loud...... watch the look on their face.
it could seriously damage someones ears so do it from about 5 m away..

Im thinking of doing a few things bigger- Im going to get one of those big big glass bottles that you keep change in (bout 1.5 meter tall) and make a molitov cocktail out of it, One of those blow up dinghy's, fill it with hydrogen/propane/Petrol and one of those man dolls with the same... I have a mate with a farm where I can set all these off, i'll video them for you if i can organize it

Re: Pyro related random thread (PRRT)
I just finished reading a page about C-4(from www.howstuffworks.com) (http://www.howstuffworks.com)) and it said that it is so stable if you shot at it it will not ignite, but heres the kicker, it claims that in the Vietnam war soldiers could build a fire in the wet jungle by lighting sticks of the stuff!?!?! once more it claims that it burns like a wood log. Maybe it's just me but this sounds like total BS. how can this extremly hight explosive have such properties?

it needsthe forse of a blasting cap to detonate. So burning it whould not be to hazardus, thow I would'nt do it

Re: Pyro related random thread (PRRT)
Vietnam era C-4 was cap sensitive, many soldiers wouldnt carry it not believing it's insensitivity. And yes you can slice off a peive and use it as firestarter, although when aflame it's much more shock sensitive. A common trick was a take a bb (.177" inch, VERY SMALL) sized piece of C-4, stick it on the tip of a knife and light it with lighter. Then throw it on the ground to detonate it, or place it on the ground and stomp on it. No shit.
Of course.. the morons who used too large a peice of C-4 earned the nickname "Stumpy."

C4 is sensitized when it is heated up? I didnt know that. I sure as hell wouldnt stomp on it.
Most HEs do burn. Nitroglycerine, C4, TNT is supposed to, and many others. I heard that back in the 1870s when nglycerine was first discovered, the miners pours some in a cup on their helment and lit it on fire becuase it burned brighter than the oil the used to use.

I bet that was nerve racking to have NG burning on top of your head.
I think C-4 produces harmful smoke when it is burned, so using it instead of wood sounds a little crazy cause it would obviously cost more, and you might be killing yourself in the process.

Some people didnt even know it was an explosive. They just though it was some weird, clear oil. It kind of weird how even today HEs are used in ping pong balls, and people never though about them hitting something made of a HE as hard as they can with one of those hitty things they use in ping pong games.

And if the miners burned NG, man they must've had some headaches.
I'd stomp on a brick of C4, if I got to keep it afterwards...

Up until the 60s IIRC RDX was believed inferior to TNT because it was simply a fast burning powder. Then some poor soul shoved a cap in it and lit the fuse...
It's true that many secondaries will simply burn if lit and yes I'm damn sure that all are more sensitive when aflame.
Also, Uncle Sam was paying for the C-4 so why should I go gather kindling?

GI's in the Vietnam war would use c-4 to heat up food rations, it's got alot of fuel power to it. TNT burns with a smoky flame too. I find it amazing that people have even lit nitroglycerine on fire, that stuff will go if you look at it wrong.

Keep it in a dark, cool place (I store mine in a place with very little light and inside a box) and it should be good for quite some time. I think there is a thread called "decomposition of H2O2" on E&W with more info, you don't have to be too worried about it decomposing.

Well it's sensitive, but maybe not that sensitive. Read this E&W thread for what they say (http://www.roguesci.org/cgi-bin/ewforum/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=000691).

WHen its done you need to shape it, so put itin your oven and heat CaReFuLly to 330-350 dagrees farenheit, and it should mmelt if you ground it to the rite grain. Then pour it into your m80 or whateva, and you can get it to detonate with some AP & a det cord. It has 16X the power of a Howitzer artillery shell per lb!!! Well today i looked in my fridge and found some ap putty, the weaker AP+PVC cement. When it burns its reminds me of NC. Anyway i was bored so i grabed a bit (about the size of a marble 1cm,1cm) and stuck it to the side of a fuse. I stuck a sinker to the side and wrapped a little tape around it to hold it togther. I lit the fuse and blop into a bucket of water about 30L in size..or about 1foot big. It sank to the bottom liberating bubbles of smoke from the fuse. I watched hoping the fuse woulnd expecting a Dompf..I got an almight DOOOMPFF and the sides of the bucket cracked and shattered. The bottom looks like a spider web. All the water billowed out and onto the ground while i stared at the bucket thinking....cool

Re: Pyro related random thread (PRRT)
tod smith, being new is no excuse for having such shitty English. Black powder contains KNO3, since I don't even know if there is such a thing as phosphorus nitrate. Black powder doesn't need any other oxidiser, so I don't know why the hell you put ammonium sulfate in it. You yourself said sulfates need a highly reactive metal, and black powder doesn't have any metal at all in it (KNO3 is a metal salt). I will leave your post there as an example of what not to do.

On EP's site, he has a page on flash, and I quote, "is that as the amount of powder doubles, the power of the explosion goes up 8 times." Is this true?

Re: Pyro related random thread (PRRT)
Somebody looked at that statement like this: The burning is related to surface area of the powder, and doubling the powder increases the surface area significantly. Now I don't know the exact calculations you would have to use to prove/disprove this, but it makes some sense...
Also, I just emailed Rat another video of the 5lb charge I set off recently, this one was taken from much closer and is very cool!

P.S. if you do try this and are using estes engines, like myself, make sure you scrape the ejection charge out, or be prepare for it, the rocket car MKI was lost that way... absolutely wrecked, having said that it was only made out of lego!

Looks nice! I finally got a site to put some pictures up, I have some sythesis up to, mostly just links to other peoples sites, but I'll have more of my own ideas and sythesis from some books, and videos up when I get more time. The page looks like shit, for some reason I couldn't get the page to go all the way out to the side so it looks fucked up, but I'm new at this web page thing. Anyways, it's here... www.geocities.com/explosives_page/index.html (http://www.geocities.com/explosives_page/index.html)
Edit: EP I used your FAQ, but it links to your page, so I'm hoping you don't mind, Rat I put a link to your site on what a kewl was as well, as well as links to other peoples pages here aswell. I have nothing from anyone elses site down as my own they are all direct links, so I hope no one minds this, if they do e-mail me and I'll remove it.

http://www.angelfire.com/nm2/cedmc/TJ.PNG (http://www.angelfire.com/nm2/cedmc/tj.html)
And in case Angelfire won't let me remotely link it, click here (http://www.angelfire.com/nm2/cedmc/tj.html).

I found out one of my duties will be loading 100 tonnes of crystal chlorate at a time into railcars and transfering solution all over the place and into railcars. There are small spills around the crystal hopper I'll be cleaning up when I do that job, should be able to get a few dozen pounds during the summer.

Re: Pyro related random thread (PRRT)
Speaking of splurging, I just purchased a magnetic stirrer/hotplate (Corning 320), and lots of 24/40 vacuum distillation glassware (250mm vigreux column, aluminum 300w heating mantle with internal controller, 1L two neck RB boiling flask, 1L one neck RB boiling flask, glass vacuum aspirator, 300mm coiled reflux column, 300mm West condenser, three Keck clamps, 105 degree vacuum adapter, 500mL pressure equalized addition funnel with 24/40 stopper, still head with 360C Hg thermometer) for a tad under $500, including shipping and handling. Needless to say, I'm shining with joy.
Next I'm going to splurge on chemicals. I already have a lot (I won't bother to list them, it would take a long time to type up an inventory ) but there's some I've been really wanting which aren't easily available OTC...

Re: Pyro related random thread (PRRT)
Hey I have a quick question. But I didn't want to waste a whole thread on it. If I made an FAE fireball with Al powder instead of coffee creamer, would it produce a bright flash?
(the method I'm using here is a canister with a propellant at the bottom which is used to push the dust fuel into the air in a cloud-like form where it then ignites and produces an FAE...similiar to EP's gas mines. Except with a dust fuel and not gasoline.)

Yes I've heard of them. Is it a similiar idea? A small explosive used to propell Al powder which then produces a bright flash?

Re: Pyro related random thread (PRRT)
That's the idea. I'm not sure if the piggies use Mg or Al, but it's one of the two. The metal powder (smaller than 600 mesh) is in a casing that surrounds a burst charge (probably containing granular Al, Mg, or Ti to ensure ignition).
They make one helluva flash and bang, hence the name flashbang.
Be careful though, they're meant to temporarily blind and daze a person, and they're quite effective at it. Don't stand too close.
I've always wanted to try it, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

Edit:
(this was going to go in my other thread, but I deleted it)
No, I didn't delete any of your posts. The reason I closed the other one is because 2 kewls were posting crap there last night when I was on (after 4am est, 2am my time), I deleted their posts, but they made more, so I deleted them and killed the thread. I don't think I did, but there's a chance I deleted your other post john. I'll open the other thread again and hope the kewls don't come fuck with it again.. I wish I'd remembered to get their IPs. So this gets closed, and the old one gets opened (if they return, I'll kill them this time).

Re: Pyro related random thread (PRRT)
erm. doesn't have much to do with what's discussed now, but, as i've seen, that's been at the beginning of the topic, so:
i've made my first explosive synth two days ago (i did HMTD). i am so happy
yesterday i set it off, and i was even more happier. the first time in my life that i've seen something selfmade go off. wow.

Re: Pyro related random thread (PRRT)
Hey, this thread is definately a good thing. My dad wanted a tree down the other day, so i drilled a hole into the trunk, and put a 4 grams of AP pressed into a steel cap and slid it into the hole. BOOM! It put a crack over 2ft up both sides and blew big chunks out of it, it didn't fall though.
Can you put HE's like AP in polumas? I did, it was fucking loud, i used a little under a gram and taped it up a bit. I read on krimzon's instructions to use a LE that's all.

Re: Pyro related random thread (PRRT)
I remember a while back, Rat made polumanas out of HMTD and AP, and blew up some kind of toy truck. Neither made the truck completly blow up (it was metal, and the polumanas were small) but the HMTD made a much bigger dent.

Re: Pyro related random thread (PRRT)
The yellow tint in your HMTD is most likely from the HCl. That's not something to be concerned about. Big crystals are something to be concerned about because stress on them can cause them to crack, and that could cause detonation.

but, these "crystals" looked like something frozen, and they floated ontop of the solution. and usually, the liquid is all but NOT YELLOW. and there was no foam this time... argh.

Re: Pyro related random thread (PRRT)
God damnit everyone this shit has gone too far. People are actually asking some semi-intelligent questions yet you constantly flame them. I have to have read the 20th Kewl imitation this week and I just want to ask if everyone could lay off a little bit? I'm not saying you shouldn't flame people that say that wan't to blow up their school but a lot of people don't know where to start.
For instance:

I'd probably use film canisters and I'd want it to be relatively small but worth its weight in materials
It is kind of a stupid question as the title implies, but you could have given him some theoretical information. You could possibly boil down some H202 ( a household item) to a high concentration, and possibly freeze the remainder of the water off. The PVC cement canister would provide adequate containment for an explosion.
OR you could drop some dry ice into a half full canister of PVC cement and pour in some extra water. I'm not particularly sure but the dry ice and acetone should cause very low temperatures, freezing the water and creating a pressure bomb. I'm not sure if the canister is strong enough for this.
If you must flame, please, lay off the K3WL imitations...
P.S. I may be leaving Backyard Ballistics soon

Re: Pyro related random thread (PRRT)
Quick question - I want a magnesium firestarter brick, like the ones they usually sell at camping stores. I was told I can get these at Wal-Mart, is this true? The local Wal-Mart here is just ghetto fabulous, half the time they tell me they don't have shit when they do and just can't find it, or they tell me they do when they don't.
So before I go over there and find it myself, does Wal-Mart have these? Has anyone else bought them there? Or if not, any idea what chain store might carry them?

Re: Pyro related random thread (PRRT)
42.1 grams is about 1 and a half ounces, so if you measure out 1.5oz of water, you can tell how much that is... and yes you do need a scale, look on Ebay, they're cheap there.

Re: Pyro related random thread (PRRT)
41 grams is not much. Magnesium is a light metal, so an equal volume of steel would weigh 3 or 4 times as much.
The flint part is heavy, so there is probably only 30 or less grams of magnesium in the whole bar.

Acetone should work just as well as gas. In fact, maybe a bit better. The burnrate depends on how much polystyrene you dissolve.

Re: Pyro related random thread (PRRT)
Thanks. I call it firestarter because that's what I use it for and it's not real napalm anyway. Whenever I have bonfires or campfires with my friend I usually take about two tin cans full of it, drop it in the middle of the firepit, and build a TP around it. It works great.

Tommorow(Monday), I will be leaving for two and a half weeks to go on a family vacation in Europe. This means I will not be on TOTSE much. But I will still be on some, thanks to Internet cafes.
I will be going to Amsterdam(in Holland), Paris,France(I hope they won't hate American tourists like us too much ),Munick,Germany(Might be able to get some German Dark). There might be some other places that we're going to, but that's all I can remember.
Remember, I will be able to access TOTSE in the Internet cafes, so don't worry, you don't need to cry abut me leaving .

Re: Pyro related random thread (PRRT)
Your friend is right. Adding charcoal to matchpowder is going to slow the powders burn rate down. This is because, if anything, the match is already undersupplied with oxidiser, adding a fuel will not help.
PS let us know when your mill blows up. (if you're the dude who was ball milling match powder)
