quote:There are thousands of different religions in the world, and in the vast majority of cases people follow the dominant faith of the culture they were born into. Is it not arrogant and self-centred to think that your faith is the "true" one and all the others are false?
|
It would depend on who you were to ask. Perhaps Ahmed would think it arrogant of myself to think I possess the only viewpoint.
If Ahmed were to think that the earth were flat, and I knew otherwise, that could also be construed as arrogant. However, I am nonetheless correct.
Arrogance, then, doesnt have much bearing in the real world since everyone is arrogant towards religion: whether you believe you are right, or that religion does not exist.
The person making such a question seems to have been hit with some ironic object.

quote:What is the point of prayer? Surely your god knows what you are going to pray for beforehand - and has already decided on his course of action. Is it not absurd to think that you can persuade god to change his mind?
|
Consider the following:
I pray for a car. God gives me a car the next day.
I do not pray for a car. God does not give me a car the next day.
If you cannot see the reasoning, you may as well stop trying to convert believers,

quote:Why does god insist that you worship him? Is he insecure - or an egomaniac?

Does it really matter? A serial killer sometimes demands worship of sorts from his victims. Whether or not God has malevolent intentions in mind is not for me to decide. If I were to lick an ass to save my hide for eternity, I would do such.

quote:Matthew 1:16 "And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus."
Luke 3:23 "And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli."
The bible is full of contradictions (for a large list see here) - explain how, even with just the small and fairly insignificant contradiction above, the bible can be the infallible word of god.
|
Obviouslythe author knows extremely little of Biblical geneology.
http://tinyurl.com/rmru9
Not only that, often more significant people were named as fathers and others were not. Jacob was Josephs father? Several hundred years earlier? If the above is not to be taken, then one may default to the names not always being directly sequencial.
This is not the only time this supposed "contradiction" occurs. Korah's lineage also has such a misnomer, however careful study shows you the above is true.

quote:Thomas Paine: "Whenever we read the obscene stories, the voluptuous debaucheries, the cruel and torturous executions, the unrelenting vindictiveness, with which more than half the Bible is filled, it would be more consistent that we called it the word of a demon that the Word of God. It is a history of wickedness that has served to corrupt and brutalize mankind; and for my own part, I sincerely detest it, as I detest everything that is cruel."
Please explain why the bible is referred to as the "good book".
|
And if I were to take out the Old Testament (which isnt really necessary for a Christian anyway), there would be only a handful of those accounts.
[quote]quote:Thomas Paine was referring to the old testament in the above quote. Please explain why the god of the old testament (an angry, vengeful god, worthy of scorn not worship) - is so different from the god talked about in the new testament.[quote]
There is no difference. the only way for salvation during the OT period was to keep your own ass in line. God saw fit at several points in history to correct his chosen people for the greater good.
At no point, however, did God ever punish someone unworthy of it. So, again, the author shows his ignorance.

"In the beginning God created the heaven and earth" ... what was god doing before "the beginning", and where did he reside?
|
Is he running out of material already? The Bible does nt indicate what god did before he created the earth. Regardless, why does that have absolutely anything to do with one's religion?

quote:Explain how god made light, then separated light from darkness, BEFORE he had created the sun, moon and stars.

Until I can read Hebrew and get a Hebrew Bible, I cant show you that the light between the first mention and the light from the sun are two different words.

quote:Explain why "he made the stars also" - countless billions of them - at the end of the forth day, when it had taken him all of the previous time to work on just one small planet.

Why?
Quote:

quote:"And God set them [the stars] in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth". We know that the stars are not set in anything, and they are rather more than just light-givers (particularly as most cannot even been seen from earth). Why is god so ignorant about his own creation?
|
Yep he is running out of ideas, and forgets quantum physics. The vacuum of space is notreally a vacuum.

quote:Thomas Paine: "When I am told that a woman called Mary said that she was with child without any co-habitation with a man, and that her betrothed husband Joseph said that an angel told him so [in a dream!] I have a right to believe them or not; such a circumstance requires a much stronger evidence than their bare word for it; but we have not even this - for neither Joseph nor Mary wrote any such matter themselves; it is only reported by others they said so - it is hearsay upon hearsay, and I do not choose to rest my belief upon such evidence."
Please explain why you believe that Mary was a virgin mother.
|
For the same reason I can believe any word out of the Bible. Chinese whispers is not as bad as the author would lead you to believe.

quote:Please also explain why you believe that Jesus rose from the dead, and why the accounts in the bible of this event conflict.

Yea.... those
examples cannot be refuted in any way possible...

quote:Jesus apparently died for us, facing god's wrath in our place. Why did he have to do this? Why couldn't god forgive us anyway? Why does god - a perfect being - have negative, human-based emotions like anger and wrath? Is not the whole concept absurd?
|
Ignorance abounds. God cannot just forgive sin without payment. Jesus did not sin, but took the punishment anyway. If one were to acknowledge that, is sins are paid for.
The concept of an angry God is not absurd. Ironically the same chapter the author pokes at my faith also could suggest that humans possess anger as an emotion of God. (
Let us make man in our own image)

quote:Please attempt to justify eternal damnation. Surely even the most evil people who ever lived (Hitler, Stalin etc.) don't deserve to be horrifically punished for eternity (and I don't think many Christians have really thought about what eternity really is).
|
I dont think you have studies much Bible...
Eternal damnation is a punishment for sin. Its just that. I cannot, and I will be damnded before I justify something that God has reasoned.
God and sin cannot coexist. Hitler had sin, therefore he cannot coexist with God. God cannot allow sin to continue after grace, therefore there is no pergatory of sorts where "good people" can live there lives in limbo.
God has a place for evil: thats Hell. Unfortunately for Green Tea Enema Man, God will not allow sin into heaven, much less allow it to continue after a change for redemption has been given. The only other choice then is eternal damnation with Satan.
..........
DAMN THAT WAS EASY!
