I'm catholic but never really got involved so i dont know the true teaching. My uncle just commited suicide after a long battle with depression and as i understand it, suicide means you go straight to hell, is this true? If not what does the Catholic church teach about suicide? a link would be great, thanks

If you're catholic then you go to hell and I don't even think you get a full burial or w/e. But since when are christians right about everything? Do you believe everything people tell you? Do you believe that many people are going to go to hell and never get to see anything else after they die?

If alternative views may help you feel better then I'll tell you this: Some people believe that after suicide you follow the same route as as you would anyway, but the problems you faced would stay with you until you've resolved them.

They will only manifest as something equally as difficult in your next incarnation.

Do you think that an all loving God would send a depressed man to burn forever just because he decided through the gloom of his depression that life was not worth living?

Give that question some good thought. Whenever I approach that question, I leave with one of two answers: Either God truly is all loving, and the person who killed themself is in heaven, or God is not all loving. Since the Bible affirms that he is all loving, the former must be true.

In Catholicism suicide is the worst of all sins. The problem is that you cannot repent before a sin, only after. This means that if you commit the sin of suicide, then you cannot repent, and thus will go to hell.

Interestingly, according to the Catholic doctrine, this makes suicide worse than murder since that can be repented.

If Catholocism is right, which it isn't, then the guy is rotting down below.

I think the guy is rotting despite what Catholicism has to say, not to be too insensitive. I must say that those who commit suicide and can not tolerate what trials they may have in life so that they may take away their own gift of life showing that they take it for granted, are indeed on a pathway to hell. Perhaps if he had chosen to live he could've repented and redeemed himself, but he wasted his opportunity and will have no other.

Well, I'm not Christian, so I don't think that either of them exist anyways.

However, I was posting from a Christian point of view, and in that religion, it's either one or the other.

You stay in Purgatory until all the veinial sins have been burnt away. Then you get to come to Heaven.

What do you believe would happen if you cut yourself, fell unconscious, and then minutes later, you were revived after dying?

Would you be considered a suicide, nonetheless?

The film Constantine brought up a valid point.

lol I don't know if that is a valid point because I don't believe in such a thing as "being revived after dying", in the sense that if they are alive or revived then the didn't die in the first place because dead people are totally dead and can not be revived other than on the day of Ressurection. So they can consider it God giving them a second chance perhaps.

Well dead as in the heart stops beating, blood stops circulating to the head and whatnot, no breathing etc. that is what dead is. if you are revived then in a sense you have come back to life. god didnt give a second chance it was the paramedics who were quick to put shocks through the persons heart that techinically saved his life.

Oh yea and by the way the catholics believe, if you commit suicide you go to hell instantly and are torn to shreds millions of times over and you have you skin burned off and as soon as its burned off a new skin appears on you and that keeps recurring for eternity. it sucks i know, thats why you should become an atheist, its not full of all that dramatic bullshit. see if you were an atheist your uncle would be feeding all kinds of bacteria and giving nutrients back to the earth not in a state of perpetual pain.

This isn't a valid point.

Suicide is only unforgivable because in normal circumstances you cannot repent it. If you were clinically "dead" and then revived (like when someone has a heart attack or something) then you could repent for your sins, and go to heaven.
