Hahaha, wow.

The answer is.... YES.

Jesus can do anything.

He can microwave a burrito so hot that not even he can eat it.

BUT THAT MEANS HE CAN'T EAT IT.

Another flaw in Christianity.

good thread. since i don't want to ressurect it from the dead, and this topic is very similar, i'll just say that the concept of omnipotence is in contradiction to logic in so many different degrees that logic must be dispensed of when arguing the existence of omnipotent beings, thus, such debate is useless. there's no way to win when every argument can be replied to with "because He just can."

To answer the original question, Jesus could cook a burrito so hot he could not eat it. Then, he could eat it. Because He just can.

Jesus is the reason why crappy forums like this one exists.

Why?

Because if it wasn't for Jesus, who else would you stupid wannabe anti social, people bag and tease the crap out of just to give yourselves a bit of self confidence in your bitter lives? Huh.. who.. You guys bag the Jews, Jesus and God for no reason at all, none but you guys think you are all good and mighty. You bag out somebody who you don't like, and isn't around, but if Jesus was here, and right in your face, you would be totally different.

You guys think your all tough bagging out people on the net. All so tough of you aye. Weak people, dare you to come and bag me about my faith to my face. You couldn't cause you are weak

You're either being sarcastic or a retard; I can't tell which.

Edit: Living Corpse, I've had arguments with people about religion offline too and I never backed down, so stop making excuses for why people pick on your faith when the truth is people pick on it because it is retarded.

Does the mental image of Jesus trying to eat a white hot lava burrito make any one else laugh?

Sorry, but just because you don't like it when your deity is criticized doesn't mean the criticism isn't valid or without reason. While the original question is certainly cliche, and made out in a silly scenario, it still exposes the illogical nature of omnipotence, and therefore the illogical nature of any deity which claims to hold omnipotence as a power.

Instead of making yourself look like a complete moron by making such ridiculous statements, try refuting what was said.

i was wondering about a christian answer to this omnipotence paradox thing.

i emailed somebody about it ( http://www.totse.com/bbs/Forum15/HTML/005468.html ) and he said basically that;

'according to christians, Omnipotence is the ability to do anything that can be possibly done.'

'so if you had a God that could make a four-sided, two-dimensional triangle, that would be nonsensical and the death of logic. Fortunately, Christian theism does not call for omnipotence to mean that God 'can do' whatever proposition we attach the words 'God can do..'

i thought it was pretty similar to what C.S. Lewis said:

quote:His Omnipotence means power to do all that is intrinsically possible, not to do the intrinsically impossible. You may attribute miracles to Him, but not nonsense. This is no limit to His power. If you choose to say 'God can give a creature free will and at the same time withhold free will from it,' you have not succeeded in saying anything about God: meaningless combinations of words do not suddenly acquire meaning simply because we prefix to them the two other words 'God can.'... It is no more possible for God than for the weakest of His creatures to carry out both of two mutually exclusive alternatives; not because His power meets an obstacle, but because nonsense remains nonsense even when we talk it about God.

what are you thoughts on this answer? rust?

so can the christian god still be omnipotent even though he cannot do the impossible? my head hurts.

It depends entirely on how we define "omnipotence", which may vary from person to person. Yes, there are those who believe that "omnipotence" doesn't entail the ability to to do the illogical, yet there are others that believe it does.

I personally believe it does (or rather should) entail the ability to do the illogical. It seems rather absurd to bestow to a being the title of god, call him supernatural, and them say that he lacks the ability to contradict our logic.

Luckily, since there are theists that claim that god can do the illogical - many of them Christians, and many of them right here on totse - we don't really have to bother arguing about the semantics of "omnipotence" if you know the position of who you're arguing with.

CS Lewis is trying to redefine omnipotence to avoid this pesky "logic" that refutes his god. He does this by saying God cannot do all things, but can only do things which are "intrinsically possible" (logically possible). However, regardless of the definition of omnipotence, the Bible clearly defines God's powers in Matthew 19:26:

Matthew 19:26

26 But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible. (KJV)

The type of omnipotence that CS Lewis argues for is not the type of omnipotence that the Christian God possesses. God can do that which is intrinsically impossible.

I've only read the original Dune. I chose my name mostly based on how cool I thought it sounded.
