I thought this type of theory was all just bunk used to make Creationists and Christians look stupid. But it seems it's true

If this was true that would mean that Dinosaurs and man coexsisted? WTF? I'm a Christian and I know that the Earth is more than a few million years old. And not only 6000(or whatever). I am livid right now.The excuse is that they all died in the GREAT FLOOD and were covered with tons of mud which is why they are all fossilized when we find them. Can one be a Christian and believe in science? It seems that this can't be. And you must be either one or the other.Though I'm basing this on something IFOTW http://www.answersingenesis.org/docs/2.asp

That is the above link...I have no idea where I found it.

Lately I have been thinking about things and life and find that I have only more questions, even after folks in the know have answered them. What gives? Do all Creationists believe this? How can it be? I am lost here.

EDIT: what do other faiths think of Dinosaurs and the Earth being a million+ years old?

In the states alot of them do. National Geographic had an article with a belief survey, it said that 35% of Americans believe that the universe was created in pretty much it's present form some time in the past ten thousand years. I wanted to go beat my head against a wall after reading that.

The Catholic Church got over this young earth and literal seven day creation stuff. It is mostly the American Prodostant types that believe it. The traditional conservative followers of alot of religions stick to equaly wierd beliefs that are just as incompadable with reality.

Acording to my undersanting of the Bible, the bible says the Earth is 6000 or so years old and as a good Christian you should belive it.

To my undersanting the bible dosn't say it outright but the 6000 numbers is gotton by adding several dates but I have not seen all the dates added.

And to my knolage most chritian cerationists belive that Dinosaurs and man coexsisted, kinka like the flintstones.

May I ask what is your opinion on evolution?

I'm 32 and have been a Christian my whole life since it was what we all were, but lately I've been struggling to understand why things are the way they are, I'm also a large believer in science and technology, it seems as if I am having a bit of a conflict. theres no way I can buy into this or the 10 thousand year theory, it's way too crazy not to mention a bit stupid. What good is something if you cannot question it? Faith is nice but a rational mind knows better. A rational mind, that is.

Q: By adding dates you can get from 6000 years to 12,000 years depending on your assumptions and each date added has a margin of error. But don't worry, that doesn't stop these groups from claiming with absolute certainty it's 6000 years old. Even though different groups disagree on the exact time of major events (and you can sometimes find disagreements within each group).

xoct: Then don't buy into it. Quite a few christians accept real science and aren't after money and power like most creationist groups.

There should be no conflict between science and religion.

The various teachings of religion DO contradict what we know from science.

Belief in the god of abraham is not

consistent with mainstream biology,

astronomy, or natural history.

The creationists are right about that.

You can't have your monotheism and

your evolution too.

The belief that all of those events are literal is not a base christian tenet.

They can be easily taken as metaphors, parables, or stories related to human beings specifically.

I must say, if one part of the Bible could be taken as a metaphor, what stops the entire Bible from being a metaphor, such as the existance of God representing the human conscience for example.

My parents once gave me a book called 'The God Experiment' in an attempt to reaffirm my faith. The author was an honest scientist who admitted that many of the miracles may well have never happened, and goes on to act like they didn't happen by explaining why they were left in the bible- they all had spiritual messages. Water to wine was actually just symbolic. Jesus didn't walk on water, this was added in in the later gospels. And so on. He even says that belief in the resurrection is not required to believe in christianity, and there is no proof. However, at the end the man states that he personally accepts the resurrection.

When I argued about this with my parents, they ignored everything he said and jumped to the part where he says that he personally accepted it, and took that as proof.

My parents have some issues.

But anyway, rational christians understand that there were a lot of metaphors and have varying opinions on which are metaphors and which actually happened.

It's important to remember that there is evidence that things like the global flood didn't exist, there is none that says God doesn't exist. Many don't pick and choose what are metaphors but follow the evidence as well as faith. (If you believe God created the earth, then the earth could be considered just another book that belongs in the bible but hasn't been fully translated yet).

Yeah, Creationists have some issues, but it's not like their the only ones, so let them believe what they want. They'll either see the error of their ways or die eventually, it doesn't really matter.

I can't for the life of me understand how anyone can have a basic understanding of facts and science and then it all goes out the window because they become devout.

This all blew my mind.

As I stated earlier what do other faiths say about this?

I have no problem with letting them believe what they wish. If they wish to abandon all logic, more power to them.

I do however , have a problem with their committment to imposing their illogical belief system onto impressionable students, by passing religion off as science. It is immoral to intentionally promote ignorance.

Creationism isn't nearly as bad as Modern geocentrism http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modern_geocentrism (the idea upheld by some christian fundamentalist that the earth is the center of the universe)

May I ask what is your opinion on evolution?

May I ask how light travels distances as great as the sides of our universe through the vacume of space and arrive at earth if the universe is only 6000 years old?

May I ask why the universe is constantly changing and new stars and galaxies are being born at this time if the universe was born in it's present state?

Do any creationists here believe they are smarter than the NASA scientists who did years if painstaking research on the age of the planet earth and the universe, just for ignorant people to look the other way?

Creationism is an insult to science, if you'd like to see creationism proven false go to the origins and civil librities thread.

@Aft3r ImaGe

No need to defend the 4.7 billion year old earth theory to me, I just posted what I posted to make Christian creationism sound crazy(er).

Actually Aft3r ImaGe, Creationism cannot be proven wrong, as it is not falsifiable. You can never prove that God didn't do it that way , regardless of how much it directly contradicts logic.

The best that we can do is to provide evidence which more logically explains the natural world and contradicts the tenets of Creationism, and using Occam's Razor to cut through the crap.

But since its non-falsifible, it fails as a scientific theory according to scientific criterion.
