Satan/The Devil (there is a distinction as described in canonical literature, but that's a different story) is only 'meant' to be evil becaus god painted him that way because god is a dick and his ego is... well, the biggest thing in the universe, basically.
The deal with the Devil is that he and some of his buddies rebelled against god because they rightfully thought he was a prick. And for that he was supposedly cast into hell.
So think about it. The Devil doesn't want to be evil or torture you. He wants to stick it to god. Who's telling you that hell is all fire and brimstone and torture and getting pineapples rammed up your ass? Hmm. Let's see, I think it's the devout bible thumping Christian types, who follow who?
God. Of course.
If I believed in any of it, I'd say it was all PR.

Haha. Dude, I've been "preaching" this same explanation for years. If one honestly thinks about it, it makes perfect sense.
If God is all powerful then naturally he's been able to control the propaganda factor. When the truth may very well be Satan is not a bad guy. In fact I'd say he's a hero and worthy of respect. I mean, he stood up to God and basically said "He guy, quit being a dickhead". Surely he knew God had the power to cast him out. But he stood up for what he thought was right. After all, doing the right thing is more important than worshipping some egomaniacal creator (at least in my book it is).
So if this is correct then Satan fucking rules. I would admire him MUCH more than God. To me God sounds desperate with all his "you must worship me or be punished", "Satan is evil don't trust him" bullshit. You don't hear Satan making such threats do you? Maybe because Satan is on the side of right. Usually such just causes don't need the fear-mongering, strong-arm threats.
Of course as an atheist I dont think any of these jokers exist. But its amusing to ponder sometimes.
