This shouldn't even be debated. Norse FTW.
Slain warriors go to Valhalla. They fight mock battles on the plains of Asgard by day, and feast and get wasted by night.
I think I'd rather go to Valhalla than 'heaven'.

Overrated? Your mom is overrated.
The Norse are the global standard for ferocity, might, terror, and cultural contribution.
The Greeks are the global standard for weakling rationalizing, pedophilia, and homoerotic sodomy.
Why vote Greek?

Most definitely overrated.
Seriously the only reason the Norse religion is so popular is because of the huge viking fetish most Americans have. The main thing most Norse-ophiles bring up is Valhall and how "bad ass" it is. Wow a banquet hall where those deemed heroic enough by the gods went when they died... impressive. Isn't that kind of like Elysium where the dead favored by the gods were allowed to spend eternity engaged in joyous festivities and athletic competition?
What else is "bad ass" about the Norse gods? "They were strong and fought Frost giants!" You mean kind of like how the Olympians fought the Titans? The main difference being the Olympians were actually able to defeat their adversaries with out destroying themselves in the process! The Titans were all cast down into tartarus for all eternity with no losses among the Olympians compare that to how most of the Norse Gods got their asses kicked before they were able to defeat the Jotuns. Wow that sure is impressive...
Don't even get me started on the Vikings they're even more overrated than their Gods if thats even possible. Look at the history of the viking movement you'll notice they only existed during the early Dark ages when Europe was reduced to barbarism and barely knew how to build walls. They were opportunistic pirates and nothing more once their targets were able to effectively fight back look how quickly they scurried back to Norseland and never came back! There is a direct correlation between the rise of feudalism and the decline of the viking menace.
As to the whole Norsemen being tougher then Greeks please... The vikings don't even come close! One word Thermopylae! Whats the historical (not mythological) Norse equivalent of that?

I suppose so. In our current world, we'd all love to go kill anybody we dislike, because we aren't allowed to.

The Norse were perhaps the most advanced seafaring culture in the world at that time. They were the first Europeans to discover North America. Danish vikings conquered England out of nowhere and held it under their boot for nearly a hundred years. Other Norse ventured as far east as Baghdad.
A primitive, savage tribe they were not. The Greeks were amazingly advanced as well, but don't discount the Norse. Besides, we're talking about religions.
Norse polytheism wins because it still has an influence on humanity. Look at Nazi Germany and the furor and ambition that invoking Wotan caused in the German's mindset. Do you think that the Greeks could be as successful trying to motivate their butthole surfers by calling upon Zeus?

Sure, because it came more efficient to trade and be diplomatic than raid. The only reason people call vikings any more bloodthirsty than any other European at the time is because they didn't give a shit about Christianity and would kill a monk just as soon as they'd kill a blacksmith.

I'll grant you that Thermopylee was one of the most impressive battles in history. If you want the Norse equivalnt, it would be the single berserker who held back the entire English army at a bridge, long enough for the rest of the viking army to regroup.
Or anything Radnar Lodbrok did.

Spartans could kick the shit outta any berserker. I vote Greek. They may have been gay, but they could kick the shit outta you, ever hear of the companion cavalry? Anyways, in greek mythology, they dont have an armageddon. Norsemen converted to christianity in a very short period of time, Greeks tried to hold on.

You must think berserkers are fiction. I can assure you, if we get into that zone, it'll be quite a task to stop us.
Although, who's to say how they'd fare against a group using tactics?
P.S.: As far as I know, the people of Iceland remained largely dedicated to Norse polytheism up until the 19th century, despite being officially Christian.

They're more sophisticated and tactical. It might not be badass, but I'd rather feast, philosophize, and buttfuck hot greek guys instead of charging into battle and dying for all eternity.

Spartans used phalanx tactics. There was nothing wrong with that, but they aren't the best and work best when your opponents are also using phalanx tactics. Everyone lines up and into their tight formations and the two opposing armies push each other. When one of the formations broke, the oppsing side exploited it and attacked. These battles usually had relatively low casualties.
Your average hoplite wouldn't do very well against a beserker equipped as they normally were. They wore very heavy armor and carrried heavy shields. The Greeks even had a saying, "come back with your shiled or on it," becuase if you came back without your shield, it was a sign that you had run away from the battle since it would be too hard to run away with it. The "on it" part comes from the fact that when Greek hoplites were wounded, their comrades would carry them away from the field on their shield, using it as a stretcher.
Beserkers were usually equipped lightly and they could probably get in and kill the hoplite before they were able to get them with their spear. Hoplites were well trained with their spear because it was their favored weapon so I bet they could do okay though. If they were equipped with the same arms and armor, the fight would probably be fairly even although Vikings might have an advantage since they're generally larger than the relatively short Greeks.

Here's something by Robert Graves:
Quote:
quote:As soon as the Emperor Julian of Constantinople, the last of the Roman emperors to worship the Olympians, had been killed fighting the Persians in A.D. 363, Zeus was told by the Three Fates that his reign had ended - he and his friends must leave Olympus.
Zeus angrily destroyed the palace with a thunderbolt, and they all went off to live among humble country people, hoping for better times. But Christian missionaries chased them out with the sign of the Cross, and turned their temples into churches, which they divided among the leading saints.
Mortals were now allowed to reckon by weeks again, as Prometheus the Titan had once taught them. The Olympians were forced to hide in woods and caves, and have not been seen for centuries.
However, Echo remains; and so does the narcissus flower, which hangs its head sadly, looking at its reflection in mountain pools; and Iris's rainbow. Moreover, the stars were never given new names by the Christians. You can still see in the night sky the Scorpion that bit Heracles; and Heracles himself; and the Nemean Lion he killed; and Artemis's She-Bear that nursed Atalanta; and Zeus's eagle; and Perseus and Andromeda; and Cepheus and Cassiopeia, Andromeda's parents; and Ariadne's Crown; and the Heavenly Twins; and Cheiron the Centaur, now known as 'The Archer'; and Phrixus's Ram; and the Bull that carried off Europa; and the winged horse Pegasus; and Leda's Swan; and Orpheus's Lyre; and the stern of the Argo; and Orion the Hunter, with his belt and sword; and many other memorials of the Olympians' ancient and savage reign.

Why are there so many retarded people here all of a sudden?
On a side note, you can't argue over historical points of the two cultures. This is not a culture forum; it is a religious one. The Norse faith was more badass ebcause they could die. Is it more incredible when something that cannot die goes against a hoard or when something that can die does the same thing? In the Greek pantheon, the gods had no official stance on matters; it was whatever they willed at the time. That is irresponsibility. In Norse mythology, there was no right or wrong either, but a high emphasis on the ethic of military service to promote the spread of the faith. The gods endorsed those who were willing to fight and die, which is badass. Odin crucified himself for three days to get magic powers. Thor crushes the skull of a snake as big as the planet with his hammer. There are true moments of badassery that are only badass because those comepting can die. Gaining victory over death is the most badass thign you can do and Lif and Lifthrasr do just that.
Also, ninjas win over anything, period.

Re: Poll: Norse or Greek?
I was simplifying for those who didn't know. Odin crucified himself with Gungnr, his spear, on Yggdrasil, the world tree, to gain the knowledge of the fates, contained in a well at the bottom of Yggdrasil guarded by two dwarves who watered the roots with teh water of the well and kept a boar from eating at the roots and checked on Fafnir, who was chained near the bottom, and to acquire the magic of the Runes. Thor crushed the head of Jormungandr with Mjollnr, though Jormungandr technically only enwraps Midgard and not the entirety of the tree. Lif and Lifthrasr are the two surviving humans after the Ragnorak. Though many gods live, it is the god Baldr, slain by his blind brother with an arrow of Hemlock early in the world's life, that becomes the new king of the gods.
Just because I simplify doesn't mean I haven't read it in a while.

While the Norse are very cool and epic, I think I prefer the Greeks. Their religion is more varied, there are Gods that cover every aspect of human life, be it war, family, sex or getting drunk. A religion that respected what being human means, unlike the ones that persevered.

The norse had Gods that covered the same breadth. They just had the same guy take more tasks more often. For instance, a case could be made for Odin being a God of each example you gave.

Re: Poll: Norse or Greek?
Having just started looking into Norse mythology lately, I don't think my opinion is worth much... but Greeks seem to have the better one... The main attraction to the Norse seems to be that people feel they know more about it then others, while Greek in more of a mainstream knowledge ancient religion. The Greeks had it all though. Punishment for all eternity, sex with gods, mortals with super human powers. Everything the Norse had, just more often...
Also, there are a few historical facts that were bugging me in this thread. The Spartans didn't fight with 9 foot spears, the Macedonians did, and used it to conquer the Spartans after their fight with Athens. Philip of Macedon improved on the greek phalanx by elongating the spear, and adding the cavalry component. Alexander, being the son of Philip, was also techincally from Macedonia, not Sparta... There was just some comment about how much Sparta conquered that bugged me, since really it was Sparta that got conquered before Alexander began his drunken rampage...

The main reason that those happened less in Norse mythology is that we know less about it. Most mythological works have been destroyed, but we still have a lot of works of Greeks and Romans.

Sure, but my point is that the greek religion did play a part in greeks becoming inquisitive and thus making a lot of discoveries.

No, really? And Macedonians were speaking slavic by any chance? No, they were speaking greek and were worshipping the greek Gods. Macedonians, Spartans, Athenians were all greeks. And btw, Alexander is an utterly greek name.
