Outright proof or a blind leap of faith?
For those of us that are religious, do you outright believe there is conclusive proof that there IS a God and he/she is the one you worship??
...or...
Do you believe the "blind leap of faith" idea, where you either jump in and believe or dont?
I'm wondering what all of you out there, whether Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, Wicca, Satanist, etc. believe.
I'm not part of any actual religion, but I do believe in a higher power, and the proof of this i've seen is my own, and i dont think could be understood by others. But in general, I just believe.

Re: Outright proof or a blind leap of faith?
I'm not a theist, not by a long shot, but I've had many a talk with them. This isn't descriptive of all theists but I think it's relevant. Almost every time I've asked them why they believe they always hit me with some isolated, ancedotal story that proves nothing.
Id est, My grandma was sick and we prayed to God to save her and he did.
I believe it's outright faith around my area, more people seem to believe because that's the way they were raised, anything contradictory to that is pretty much insane to them.

Re: Outright proof or a blind leap of faith?
It is impossible to prove God exists, unless you find out that you yourself are god. In which case the you whole notion of God would vanish.

How could you find out if you yourself are God if you can't find out a God exists?
And the notion of God will never vanish. There will always be those that believe, or at least those that admit the possibility.

Exactly, the idea of a supreme being will never fade unless we can prove that it doesn't exist, which is generally impossible with our current level of knowledge.
I myself am an atheist, or weak atheist if you want to get technical, and I openly admit the possibility of said supreme diety just not the evidence for it.
I like you Goat Saint, I hope you stay.

The thing is, for most ideas of a supreme being there is no disproving to be done because they've conveniently been situated outside of the dimentions we have perception of, i.e. time, space, scale.

I too believe in a god. It just makes sense to me, even if the god is no more than a creator. Logically, the idea of a superiour creator makes perfect sense.

I.e. unfalsifiable bullshit someone cooked up one day which has since morphed over time to always exist in the gaps where ignorance is high and retreat from the domains where knowledge reigns supreme.
The more and more we figure out, the less and less that gets attributed to supernatural bullshit.
If we ever reach a point where all the mysteries of the universe are known, then suprnatural creation will regress into nothingness because there is no more ignorance to leech off of.
There is no reason to believe in something that has no evidence concerning it.
