His name will be announced soon, but the cardinals have burned the white smoke to signal they have voted for a new pope. I don't give a damn about the church, but this is exciting
Just please don't let it be Ratty...

It sounds as though he had repented after being a Nazi.
So it may be a good thing to have someone who will definately try defend and keep the faith.

He was never a nazi.
After I heard that they decided so quickly, I knew it was Ratzinger. Not my first choice for who I think could have done the best, but we will have to wait and see before we cast judgement on him.

That doesn't mean he was a nazi. Believing in the basic tenets of nazism makes you a nazi, he was just forced to join the Hitler Youth.
A lot of the soldiers in the German Army weren't nazis, but they didn't have much choice because they were forced to join. Same shit happened with Ratzinger. He was forced to join the Hitler Youth, just like a lot of other youths at the time.

The tenets of the Christian faith aren't the literal words of the scriptures, that's just how they were recorded centuries ago. Religion should have one goal, improving quality of life, and the conditions of life have changed drastically over time while the policies of the church have not. The empty dogma that is serves up is becoming less and less relevent as the world changes, the evidence for this is the falling levels of people attending mass, even studying to join the priesthood, which are the lowest in the history of the church. Since most people are unprepared to devise their own moral system, this leaves disenfranchised Christians with nowhere to look to for guidance.
We need a liberal to take the edges off of man's outdated words.

Why should Christians modify their faith in order to accommodate what is "modern" ?
The Bible is "...Godbreathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." 2 Timothy 3:16
That means THEN, and NOW.
The only tenets of the Christian faith are the very tenets given to us by the Bible. Where else would we get them ? that made absolutely NO sense for you to say that.
Religion should have NO PART in our relationship with God...FAITH in God should be the goal; the reward being salvation from sin.
The Bible is not MAN'S word, but is GOD'S word, and doesn't need to be revised...whether liberally, or fundamentally.
It is perfect in it's creation, and doesn't need revision.
To say so is to have an utter lack of faith in your Creator, especially when He tells us that His word is perfect, and cannot be changed.
What you are proposing is that we "bend like reeds in the wind" to the world...not only is that completely against what the Bible teaches, but it shows nothing else but a lack of conviction.

I don't think the Catholic Bible is accurate, entirely. Things have been added, and removed.
God has allowed His word to spread around the globe so that His message can be heard.
If someone reads the Bible and only gets one thing out of it, God is satisfied.
That one thing is that Christ died for our sin...the ultimate redemption.
If I am not answering what you are asking, please expound so I can be appropriate.

NO that pretty much answered it. I just get the impression form alot of fundimentalist types that they think it is imposible for the Bible to be changed or corupted.
And now that there is a new pope my friend's band can play their Dinner Must Be Stopped song without fear of angry Catholics rushing the stage.

Well, I could certainly change John 3:16...
"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Chicken, that whosever believe in Him shall gain everlasting breakfast."
Print a thousand copies and give them to the hotels in my area.
This is not the kind of "change" that God is referring to when He says that His word will endure, and cannot be changed.
Is this more clear now ?

New International Reader's Version instituted gender-related changes http:../../www.bible-researcher.com/csguidelines1.html
This is just one example of many that the Bible can be changed.
This does not, however, nullify God's statement that His word cannot be changed, because He is not regarding the semantics of His word, but rather the message.
I don't think I am able to adequately explain this...I know what I mean, but cannot say it in a way that will clarify.
Sorry.

ratzinger is the worst possible pope.
Theres a book i read, i cant remember the title, ll post it here later. Its about power struggles in the catholic church, and about how to get anywhere you make yourself available as a lover to those with higher power, how all the cardinals are homosexuals and corrupt, etc. Ratzinger was one of the major parties involved. The book was banned by the vatican, but ill find the title and author, who was a cardinal at the time and fled once it was published.

Sort of how 'How the hell are you today?' 'How ya doin' man?' and 'What's up, bro?' Are all different but mean the same thing? I know what you're trying to say; it can be translated and edited for clarity/obscurity so long as the message is the same.

I've heard Marilyn Manson say that the Beatles inspired him, but you wouldn't say that the Beatles wrote "The Beautiful People" or "The Dope Show," would you?
Aside from that, unless you own the original aramaic/greek/hebrew, you are not getting the same translation. Ever hear the term "lost in translation?"
It's whatever the translator wants it to be.

Another point: the gospels that were chosen by the church to become part of the bible are only 4 of some two dozen gospels that could have been used. If the Gospel of Thomas had been chosen, which is an account of things Jesus himself was supposed to have said to Thomas (something the other gospels neglected in favor of the narrative of Jesus' life), it would have advocated not having a church, but finding revelation and salvation within ourselves on our own. We could debate until the end of time whether the gospels were inspired by god or not, but one thing that is unquestionable is that the bible was compiled by man. Since there are conflicting points of view expressed in the gospels, to only follow the ones that have been chosen by members of the church cannot be called only following the word of god.
Just like reality TV, it's all in the editing...

Sorry.How about this:
"Christ is the Master; the Scriptures are only the servant. The true way to test all the Books is to see whether they work the will of Christ or not. No Book which does not preach Christ can be apostolic, though Peter or Paul were its author. And no Book which does preach Christ can fail to be apostolic, although Judas, Ananias, Pilate, or Herod were its author." - Martin Luther.
My ancestor always says it best.

How could John describe what we all now know to be an airplane, BACK THEN ? "Metal bird in the sky..." *raises an eyebrow*
If you haven't read the Bible, you haven't got the right to question it.
There are many reasons to believe that man couldn't have possibly written it on their own.
It's perfect, it's amazing...it's almost unbelievable.
