) It was an ancient practice to take drugs in churches. Particularly Mescaline. The Hopee indians still do today. The ancient belief was that there was a void between body and spirit, and that the physical mind needed to be silenced or subdued for the Spirit, Soul, and Sacred Sensorium to be 'worked with' or enlightened.
The Early-Christian belief was that this was no longer necessary because Christ reforged the void between Soul/Spirit and Body.
However, it's still practiced in circles around the world, and it aparently still works for some of them.
I like the way Seph explained it, and side with him, from a Christian point of view, that is, "In celebration of God, you should eat drink and be merry, in studying his word, you should have a clear mind."
