than I am here for no reason other than random chance. I am but the result of random combinatinos of complex amino acids. I dont have free thought, I am merely choosing what benefits me most in every situation. I have no reason to be here, no reason not to be here, nobody has any reason at all. No destiny, no predetermination, I am just here. I am not here BECAUSE im here, im just here. Goodie...

What's the other option?

Only here to prove your goody two-shoes worth so you can take eternal residence in heaven or your basic evil nature so you can reside eternally in hell? Or better yet, you are predetermined to hell. What a joke!

If religion is wrong, then fucking suck it up and be happy until you die. Who cares if there is no reward or punishment at the end? They exist while you're alive, so deal with the shit now...or do you need some sort of extension? Are you that afraid of not existing anymore?

That's the right idea.

There is no purpose or meaning

in the universe, besides in your

mind.

It's up to us to decide

what things mean, and what the

point of it all is.

The idea of complete nonexistance after death is scary. I hope there's an extension of some sort. I'd bet any near death person would agree.

If the afterlife is anything like life, I would venture to guess that if you believe it is over then it will be so. Those who dwell in memories will walk the same path over and over while stacking the same stones. If you wish for an adventure that will be true for you.....pure freedom...... which is scary in itself.

Just as this life has had the capacity to be all those things from the beginning.

I've been looking down the barrel of a gun in the hands of a theif twice, and it didn't scare me. Inexistence isn't a fear of mine, even when I'm close to death.

I think its pretty cool how the egyptians went. When they were about to die they would read them a set of instruction on what they were about to do like cross rivers and shit, they didnt have to worry about finding nothing, they were ready to go on an adventure.

Oh yeah, like I care how tough you think I am. I'm not afraid of death, and I'm not afraid of inexistence...that doesn't make me tough, that means I'm happy with my past and present, and with my future.

Cadabra:

Thanks for the laugh. I loved the Clint Eastwood imagery from that little scene.

Hex:

I'm curious as to when these gun-point threats occurred. You've never mentioned them in the past.

Moving on...

What most people here fail to realize is this: If everything is simply random chance, then the possibility of an afterlife already exists, regardless of religion and faith.

Random chance implies infinite possibilities. Anything can happen at any time. Anything can happen upon your death. To me, this is freedom at its finest; there are no restrictions.

But, since this MAY be your one shot at the Universe, why not try to enjoy it while you're here? If it turns out that there is something more afterwards, then you've got a good start, right?

- Have a nice day.

What about the people that didn't know they were about to die (as would happen if there was an accident, or a heart attack) ?

And anyone who believes you is not considering what you are saying.

It must be very unsettling to know that you can so effectively lie to yourself.

I am not trying to be insulting, and offer any apology you need for coming off as being insulting.

I have never met a single person that didn't know God who is as fearless or lacking in doubt about our universe as you claim to be.

Veritas: But, since this MAY be your one shot at the Universe, why not try to enjoy it while you're here? If it turns out that there is something more afterwards, then you've got a good start, right?

So, you are not ruling out the fact that people of all religions can and do enjoy their lives ?

You seem to be implying that in order to enjoy this life, we must not give heed to the possibility of a god.

Non existence at the end wouldnt be so bad seeing as how youve got no mind, no thought, no nothing telling you that it IS scary...

i really think there is something after death because how can the brain percieve utter nothingness? it cant... there has to be soemthin else... and if it IS infact nothing, it wont be scary... you wont even remember what the word scary means

Digi:

"Freedom from what? Freedom to DO what?"

My first post was rushed, obviously. I tried to clear up my thoughts with my next post. The idea that everything in this Universe is up to random chance would imply that there are endless possibilities. There are no restrictions. Hence the word "freedom".

"So, you are not ruling out the fact that people of all religions can and do enjoy their lives?"

I don't believe that I ever posted anything to the contrary. My point was that no one can say for certain what's going to happen. You may as well try to be happy, even if you believe that this is your one and only shot at existence. (the OP didn't seem too comfortable with the thought of chaos)

"You seem to be implying that in order to enjoy this life, we must not give heed to the possibility of a god."

No. I never stated that ignoring the possibility of God's existence is a prerequisite to happiness. On the other hand, belief in God is not a requirement for a fulfilling life either. I am implying that you can still enjoy your existence without faith, spirituality, or the hope of an afterlife.

Lucifer:

"i really think there is something after death because how can the brain percieve utter nothingness? it cant..."

Your brain's ability to interpret external stimuli no longer matters when all of your brain cells have shut down (i.e. death). I would guess that any form of existence after death would have nothing to do with your physical body, unless you're into the zombie thing. Anyway, there's no way to tell what your mind is capable of comprehending unless you have seen and experienced all that this Universe has to offer.

You are right...non-existence woudn't be "bad" for the NON-EXISTENT.

But for us, who are still here and very much alive, it is Hell just to think that this is the only shot we've got.
