nothing wrong with jehova's witnesses. although very few of them really understand their faith.(and that inculdes a lot of elders i've known).

like most 'churches' its become an institution.

i noticed with wry amusement that they are slowly but surely backing away from the nonsense doctrine of 1914...

Where did you get the name Jehovah? I have heard is was a really bad tranlation of YHWH but that was from a page trying to discredit all religions but a few americanized prodistant denominations.

I accidently answered the door to the jehovahs witness's a few moths ago and because i spoke to them for all of three minutes before shutting they door the knock my house at least once a week and ask my mother or father if im in.

A word of warning, if you are going to speak to them on your door for a minute or two to try and get rid of them, dont tell them your name when they ask. They'll think your interested.

Hey! I was a JW too. I'm not a kid though. It is a very tight knit group though. You learn a lot about the Bible that other religions don't consider.

My grandmother is a Jehovah's witness, and I think she actually makes sense... (RE lessons were REALLY confusing. God is three people, apparently... What the smeg?)

But anyway, I think they rule...

That might be because I don't get them knocking on my door, and I know lots of them... But still, most of them I've met are really, really nice...

So... I'll go now and leave you to carry on discussing...

The name Jehovah does come from YHVH. The letters are Yod Heh Vau Heh. The true pronunciation is closer to Yahweh. But because the name of God is not supposed to be spoken they attached the vowel sounds from another name of God ADNI, or Adonai (Aleph Daleth Nun Yod) to keep it from being profaned.

About the JWs, when I was in high school there was this really hot girl that was a Jehovah's Witness. I called her house to ask her on a date and her parents explained that they don't believe in dating. They only believe in courting, which is basically dating to get married. Since we were both too young for that I had to say "Oh, I see," and hang up.

Well if you think about it,

-You are your mothers son/daughter

-You are also your fathers son/daughter

-You are your grandparents grandson/daughter

etc

That's 3 different things, yet, you are still the one person.

If that makes sense....

I meant the whole father, son and holy ghost thing... Not got to the holy ghost part, but if God is God (the father) AND Jesus (the son), which people keep trying to tell me he is, was he talking to himself the whole time?

How can he be if the bible SAYS he isn't... and Jesus talks to God alot... was he talking to himself? It makes no sense... No sense at all... *shakes head at RE teacher and walks away*

i appreciate you weren't arguing with anyone...luckily for you as with arguments that weak you'd get slaugthered in any real debate.

what you said was the sort of idiotic comment that one hears from the more penetecostal end of the evangelical spectrum.

there's a book commonly known as 'The Bible'.

its full of those word things but try it anyway.

I don't really get it either. It's probably just one of those things we wont understand until the end.

Jehovah in the old testament seems like a megalomaniac, ordering murder of innocents, theft, rape and the genocide of entire nations. He's also a jealous god who sends evil spirits to torment people and destroys children for the sins of their ancestors. How does that make sense?

If Jehovah was to carry on like that today he'd be indicted for crimes against humanity and tried in the Hague along with other monsters like Milosevic. If you want to accept such a warped and twisted depiction of the supreme being then so be it - remember, "garbage in = garbage out".

For those who answer the door and talk to jw's you should know they keep records, your name, job, age, family members etc, on file and also that a certain amount of "missionary" work is required of them so if you speak civilly with them they will return. You become an easy score to add to the weekly tally.

Met a young lady one day who had been a jw and left. She has been ostracised by all the others, even her immediate family will not talk to her. That same fate awaits all who question the jw's doctrine, cast into figurative outer darkness

The jw religion is so full of holes it's tragic!

Namaste

I've long ago given up trying to make sense of that. It just makes so much better sense as conflicting interpretations of who Jesus was being written down, and the early church trying to have its cake and eat it too.

It's like what would happen if you try to reconcile Jehovah's Witness and Mormonism. Not gonna happen unless you make some contrived pseudo-doctrine.

The Holy Trinity is kinda hard to explain but i'll try my best.

God the Father relation to Jesus the son- Jesus is part of God like a son is to his father(this if the father is a good father) A son will have physical and mental traits of his father but the son still talks to his father. Also they might have the same thoughts at the same time.

Also Jesus is God incarnated. that means he would have no memory of his godly origin.

God and the Holy Spirit relationship- The Holy Spirit is God inside you. When you take the Body and Blood of Christ you come in union with God during that time.

You are like a puzzle piece with God(the puzzle) you are an individual piece and can function by yourself and god is inside giving you the little piece of the picture.

but with you the piece connected with God that is only when you can see the picture altogether.

other christians please fill in the wholes.

It really bugs me when people lump my religion in with the jehova's witnesses.

WE'VE never predicted the year the world will end and been wrong, ever.

If someone leaves the church of jesus christ of latter day saints the rest of the saints aren't commanded to ignore those who have left, but are to reach out to them and bring them back into the fray.

I respect, although fundamentally disagree with, the JWs. The jehovas witnesses are completely different from the mormons, except for the doctrine that god, jesus and the holy spirit are three different beings, which I will explain below.

This explanation is taken from "A marvelous work and a wonder" by LeGrand Richards, an apostle of the church of jesus christ of latter day saints.

"There has been much misunderstanding regarding the oft-repeated statement that Jesus and his Father are one. A careful reading of the seventeenth chapter of John should clarify this matter fully. As Jesus was about to be offered up, he prayed unto his father and thanked him for his apostles, saying, "That they may be one as we are." (John 17:11.) Then he added:

Quote:
quote:Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;

That they all may be one; as thou, Fatherm art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us; that the word may believe that thou has sent me. (John 17:20-21)
Now it is very apparent that jesus was not speaking of oneness of personage, but oneness of purpose, for he further prayed that they might be with him, which would be unnecessary if the oneness referred to was of personage instead of purpose.

Quote:
quote:Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me; for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world. (John 17:24)
Again it is evident that the oneness referred to has no reference to oneness of personage, for if jesus and his father were one in person, how absurd to think that Jesus would pray unto himself, or that he would love himself before the foundation of the world. He said:

Quote:
quote:And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true god, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. (john 17:3)
This true knowledge of God and of his son, Jesus Christ, has come again to the world in this dispensation, not through a study of the Bible but through the actual appearance of these heavenly personages to the young Joseph Smith, as he has so eloquently testified."

(p 22-23, "A marvelous work and a wonder" LeGrand Richards of the quorum of the twelve apostles of the church of Jesus Christ of latter day saints)

Some of that I will give you is a matter of faith within the LDS church, but this is what I believe and I believe jives with some of the JW teachings. (correct me if I'm wrong)

I'd like to believe that the Jehovas Witnesses are a cult, but I've only heard that from the same narrow-minded people that told me Mormonism was a cult before my conversion (which is officially to take place on the 11th of December).

I will, as I believe is my duty, start a parallel topic to this one about the LDS church, and you can all criticise my religion there.

mattsurfer115, I would like to hear more specifics about your religion if you please.

JW is a weird religion. It's a pity that so many of them are really nice people.

A friend of mine was telling me that the point behind them not celebrating birthdays/xmas/etc is that it's part of a cult mentality where the highs and lows are meant to be removed from a persons life to have more control over them (support from the church through the low points and banning of high points like celebrations etc).

I have a few JW's as friends and I've seen a few of them get totally shattered by the way in which the institution treats them, one got dis-fellowshipped becuase she fell pregnant out of marriage and she got totally abandoned by her family and friends. So very nice of them.
