i have been thinking about this for a while and i have come to think that religon is just something that our parents believed in and because they beleived in it than we r supposed to beleive it just because they did. so how r we supposed to beleive our religon is the right one or that any religon is right. just because we were brought up to believe in a certain religon means that we r supposed to think its right?

People have evolved in all different parts of the world so they just come up with a reason to y the universe exists and reasons y other ppl should beleive in it to. Like take God for example somebody just came up with a story about a guy called jesus made it fit in with the reason y r universe exists and just got some people too belive its true.

So y should we need religon? The answer too y the universe exists isnt cosmic or mystical its just some scientific thing the created the universe and some people wanted to belive in some other mystical force.

If u can think of any reasons y this isnt true than tell me i would like too know. and dont bitch about more spelling!

Your argument assumes that religion is completly a prouduct of man. If any supernatural being is discovered it falls apart.

But that does not seem likley to happen any time soon and if it does most people who are opposesd to the idea of religion will come up with some evidence to disprove it. So your argument will remain sond for years to come.

Religeons are mainly a particular persons beliefs about whatever, which are available for the kind of people incapable of finding answers for themselves.

Religeons are interesting to study, but to conform to anything is to add another shackle to your mind.

Yes, pretty much. Putting people on the spot because of contradictions both religious and the non-religious is fun!

quit being a nihilism whore dude, it doesn't make you appear cool or smart. It just makes it appear that you have no thoughts of your own.

Besides that then some guy would be believing in nihilism just because you (among others) believe in it. Which would put him back right where he started with a different name.

okay I_Like_Traffic_Lights, since I'm a nihilism whore I'll defend my position.

According to you, I have no thoughts of my own; however, by advocating nihilism I have formulated my own ideas and thoughts by going against what is accepted by the rest of society. Nihilism promotes the formulation of an individual opinion. I'm also confused by that statement of me having no thoughts of my own. With nihilism, there are no imposed morals, beliefs, etc...and because of that I also don't think for myself? I call not thinking for myself adopting some religion where my morals, beliefs and ideals are imposed on me from some book.

"Besides that then some guy would be believing in nihilism just because you (among others) believe in it. Which would put him back right where he started with a different name."

He'd be farther ahead than he is now because he would have found something to explain what he is asking.

Because we need something to cling to. Why? Is the glass half full or half empty? If you wake up tomorrow and say "my life is meaningless, there isn't anything other than this." It kind'a puts in a bad day perspective. Where as if you wake up and say "God I don't know what you have planned for me, but I'll do it for the reward you promised me." Though people should know that religons are opinions, And theory for reaching god. I guess its whatever gets you through the day.

Thats why I think we need a religon. Some of man kind needs to be told what to do, and how to live.

Religion serves many purposes.

1.) To explain what we ourlselves cannot understand or refuse to figure out for oureselves.

2.) To aid us in life, as a sort of crutch. When we can't cope with life, it's always there to pick us up.

3.) To give us standard morals to live by. If you think about it, the ten commandments are a pretty basic form of natural laws: be good to your neighboor, don't kill, don't steal, don't bite the hand that feeds you...These are all rules we would probably come up with on our own even if we had never heard of the ten commandments.

There's more sub-catagories.

But whether or not it's good to rely on any one religion for these purposes I don't know. I personally refuse to follow what my parents tell me just because they say so.

That's better.

I just hate to see things like "join this" "think like me", it really seems like a shortcut to thinking. I advise you to take a step further though, as your ideas don't seem to be so much about your ideas but the destruction of others. This is my main pet peeve with nihilism. I actually began to walk down that path myself when first stumbling onto Nietzshe and the like (after startling "revelations" in my own head one might call a "religious experience"), but then I realized I became the constant chaos factor. With my younger ideals my thoughts slumped into a REactive state. Anything somebody said I thought it didn't have to be that way. Every problem had a solution and every solution had a problem.

With nihilism it's far too easy to base yourself on your opposition, which isn't who you are and it'll never help those you hope to awake from their "theist idiocy", and it will certainly never help you. HAVING to think and do the opposite of your current culture is just as bad as blindly following it, you're merely blindly going the opposite direction.

Another reason I didn't like nihilsm is it's void of meaning. I realize that life itself may be void of meaning, but you can do something about that. Nihilsm just doesn't care. I'm not saying find Jesus and be saved so that there is meaning in your life, or muhammad or go be a monk in tibet or whatever. I'm merely saying that in the end it comes down to nothing, everything is equal in inherent value (nothing) then really the meaning is what you give it. I understand that sounds somewhat nihilistic/existentialist but those talk of reality being defined by the individual. I say meaning, purpose, LOVE is what you make it.

I understand it's easy to sometimes think that you are the only person who's really real, completely trapped inside yourself, and frightened of a world gone mad. But you gotta understand everybody else feels like that too sometimes. They're not going to ask for help, but they need it. Living your life like others and their thoughts and beliefs (that they love or they wouldn't think and believe them) mean NOTHING further perpetuates this choas this sense of fear.

*edit* sorry didn't finish my last sentence, kinda hungover*

I_Like_Traffic_Lights, what will eventually happen to our friend some guy is that he'll explore different religions and philosophies until he finds the one the he can relate to and say "That's me!" When I began researching the different religions and philosophies, I took bits and pieces from each, formulating my own, until one night while reading up on existentialism stumbled upon nihilism. Immediately I knew that I was nihilist.

By going against society, I don't mean walk left while every goes right.

Religion and philosophy is completly SUBJECTIVE.

At most, I am trying to make other people aware to the other possibilities in life. If I can make someone re-evaluate their own principles and explore a different way of thinking, that's great. What they do after that is up to them.
