Quote:
quote:The Universe began not with a bang but with a low moan, building into a roar that gave way to a deafening hiss. And those sounds gave birth to the first stars.
Now you are hearing it from an other source : science itself. A low moan... a word ? The sound which created ?

Out of the cosmic microwave background radiation, the original cosmic cacophony has been reconstructed...and, hold on tight :

Quote:
quote:Translating the observed frequency spectrum directly to sound yields tones far too low for ears to hear - some 50 octaves below middle A - but transpose the score up all those octaves and you can listen to it.

As for volume, the intensity of the variations corresponds to about 110 decibels, as loud as a rock concert. Whittle has also used the best available cosmological models to map the way the vibrations evolved over time, showing how the chords of the big bang changed over the Universe's first million years or so.
About 50 octaves below A, or the human voice.

Was that God's voice ?

The Bible may be right, after all.

Universe started with hiss, not bang http://www.newscientist.com/hottopic...?id=ns99995092

For sound to occur, there must be matter for the sound to travel through. "In space, no one can hear you scream," remember? So, if there was a sound, it must have been travelling through matter that was already present.

The link you gave said that the sound was rather musical. It said it went through many octaves, so it was bound to go through the same pitch as a human voice. And if by middle a, they mean the note a tone and a half lower than middle C, then 50 octaves below middle A is much deeper than the human voice. You've really butchered this article to make it malformedly fit in with your opinion.

Not at all. You understood it all wrong, it's that simple.

Theories (which is what this is, a theory) change like the wind. One day our universe will be a soccer ball, the next it won't exist in the eighth dimension, and the next it'll be a plum flying through the multi-plum tree of life.

How could God speak? He has no bodily form. That "voice" is a figure of speech, similar to His "outstretched arm".

If God has no body how could He possibly speak?

You don't understand your own Bible.

If god was real, and he was powerful enough to create a universe, I think he wouldn't have to think fucking twice to say a few words, or create arms out of nothing.

He'd also have the decency to obey his own set of physics. Please, Uncus, explain my misinterpretation. I'm not being aggressive here, I want to see how I what I'm getting mixed up.

The writers of the bible aren't the only ones who believe the universe began with sound.

But I dunno, people say a lot of things, I'm gonna go sit down now and say om.

Anyways, if anything the universe was a fart of god's. I doubt anyone would create such an abomination of beauty willingly.

You have to read the article carefully.

It's not up to me to explain, the article does it very well.

Gustave, you don't know what you are saying.

Have you ever looked at the clouds ? I suppose you have of course, like anybody has, but try some time watching them really carefully. Study them, contemplate them. Watch the speed of the cloud carpet of a grey sky as it is fleeting by over your head.

Catch their majesty.

To me (and this is how it will remain until I am proven otherwise) no theory can prove how the world was created. We just don't know. We would all love to know exactly how it was created. It really doesn't matter anymore then knowing the answer to some question like "What is the point of life?"

So why bitch over it.

OK, I re-read the article (admittedly, I did scan merely scan through it the first time). It claims that:

Quote:
quote:For those worried that you cannot have sounds in space, that is true today, but it was not so in the Universe's infancy. For perhaps its first million years, the Universe was small and dense enough that sound waves could indeed travel through it - so efficiently, in fact, that they moved at about half the speed of light
.

So that explains how sounds could have travelled and what-not. But that presupposes that the matter was already there for it to travel through, so the sound (and explosion outwards) was the sound of the substances being moved outwards and agitated in an unfriendly manner. It does not explain how the substances came to be there. It gives the reader a better idea what the 'big bang' (or big hiss) would have sounded like, but doesn't explain what created the substance that exploded in the first place.
