Ok for my class Im doing this Essay. The Question is: Which do you think benefits mankind the most, Science/Technology or Religion. I think Religion because if it was not for religion and the beliefs of heaven and hell then there would be alot of violence and people wont care and the world will be chaos. What do u guys think?

i agrue completely, i mean not a single war was started over religion, certainly not the Jihad, or the Crusades, no certainly not those, oh yeah and no Inquisition

nor those cults that have peaple commit suicide

i mean all science is done is cure diseases and figure out how things work, and how to make everything better.

Yeah, good thing theres not a lot of violence in the world. I love how you can walk down the streets without thinking about whether or not somebodies gonna jump out at you with a gun, or let your kids go play without worrying if they'll be kidnapped and molested/murdered, or go to foreign countries without being shot/kidnapped because of wehere you're from, or how there are and never have been any wars. Its great isn't it? And its all thanks to religion. Who knows what the world might be without it; people killing over territory, kids getting killed for no reason, women being raped, mothers being shot for their car, fathers being stabbed for the $20 in their wallet, governments killing innocent people over money, etc.....

Good thing religion is here to prevent all that. What a safe and violent free world we live in.

I really don't think anyone, despite their religion or how religious they are can deny that science has benefited society more then religion. Unless they're an idiot.

No matter how much they believe and love their religion, they still se the wars that go on over holy books and whos right. They cans till look back on history and read about the violence and horrible actions of religious people.

You won't find stories about groups of scientists slaughtering people because they refuse to believe. Not that I know of anyways. And you can't deny that without science we'd all be dying at 20 from colds and influenza. Religion doesn't keep us from getting polio.

Actually if you wanted to argue a different point view to what everyone else will (hold on, your probably in the US, land of religious nuts so youll prob have some pro-religion ppl.- doesnt matter).

You could look at the development of human society and compare anthropological research. Just to get you started (im doing this at uni at the moment...!) Primitive Hunter/Gatherer societies, while considered backwards and undeveloped (by western standards) actually don't work as hard to obtain their food (sometimes = 2hrs a day), often have comparitvely good health, roughly egalitarian societies, rich communal culture and a balanced relationship with their environment. There are still a number of problems though.

Comparitively, more progressed argicultural and industrial societies are characterised by intensely physical labour/ massive consumption of non-human energy in order to produce food/goods, huge social inequality and break-down, high levels of environmental damage, poor health and a plethora of diseases.

You could argue that while science/technology has allowed us to "progress", and this is often seen as "good" many of its advancements are to solve problems it created/contributed to i.e Global warming. It has also come at a huge cost to human societies and the environment.

Just some food for thought.

In technological civilisations, the worker 'ants' works the other six hours a day, to pay for the technology

I think all of humankinds 'advances', as nice as they seem on the surface, only benefit about 10-20% of the worlds population at most. Meanwhile, the majority has to suffer its effects(pollution, overpopulation, disease, extinction of species, depletion of natural resources, etc). Everyone says that humans are evolving and growing better everyday, but if you would open your eyes and see what is going on in the world, you would be forced to admit that overall, humans are evil bastards wallowing in their own filth. Oh, wait a minute, I think that there is a book that predicted this..........

Default Re: Science or Religion.

We need them both. Without the power of believing in something better than ourselves we would have nothing. We need science for the benefits of mankind. With science we can get rid of the damned who dare to destroy our worlds.
